Ran across a Jacob AARNS in Loudon Co VA in 1820 census. Also in the Virginia Colonial Soldiers there is a Jacob Arrens who was in Capt George Mercer's Company in July 1754, evidently captured at the Battle of the Meadows in 1754. I plan to keep trying to follow this up as the military records sometimes are some of the best sources of information. I don't think my line was in Virginia, but I have been known to be wrong!! My Orrens were from Lincoln County NC and I have traced them back to my satisfaction to the 1790 census with a "John Orm" (as the index lists him) as the father of my Jacob, father of Peter Washington, John, Ann and Eveline and some others not yet identified by name. He later came to Washington Co TN after being in Wilkes and Caldwell Cos in NC. I am in Carter Co TN.

Sandy, I was never able to get to the website shown and have not heard from Kim in months. I am a descendant of Peter Washington Orren and have been in contact with a gg granddaughter of Jacob Orren born 1863 in North Carolina. I believe he is buried at Bethel Cemetery along with his wife Maud and I think that is in Statesville. Her e-mail is pfullorr52@yahoo.com.

Sandy, Peter Washington's son Jacob Lawson lived in Carter County, Washington County and Unicoi County TN and died there. He was born in 1863. I think the Jacob Orren you are looking for is Jacob O Orren who was married to Maud Day. Per her death certificate she was buried at Bethel Cemetery in Iredell County, so I suspect that Jacob O was also. Jacob Lawson Orren was a brother to my g grandmother Martha Orren. His children and grandchildren all remained in the area of northeast Tennessee to the best of my knowledge. I have run into several Jacobs, though, including one born in 1852 per 1860 census that I have been unable to find after the Civil War. Hope this helps. I understand that several people in the Statesville area are working on the Orren family. -

my name is jacqueline orrand and I live in wilson county tennessee. I am a decendent of John Orand/Orrand married to Charlotte Linder from Rockingham NC. I think your right about the German Line, the Linders came to Pennylvania in 1733 and were very german. Peggy lived with the Sheldons in Statesville TN and by this time John and Charlotte were living in Woodbury TN in Cannon County and that is about all I can prove.Trying to look around where Charlotte's people were and cant seem to find much. Trying to prove Charlotte's father in the Rev. War Charlotte couldnt but claims that is where he died(from a letter written to Charlotte by her school teacher Pleasnt Phillips).

I think we are probably looking too narrowly in hunting this family, and I am sure there is some connection at some point between a great many of the families that spelled their name Orandt, Arant, Arrance, Aron, Iron, Arrens, etc.
I believe the clerks spelled the name as they heard it, and I have even seen it spelled different ways on the same document. The group in Wilson County, Tennessee believe they are descended from the John Orren who was in Rockingham in 1820. There was a John Oren who lived in Greene County TN (I believe it was 1810), and from what I could discover moved on into Kentucky and Illinois (at least his children did). He is listed in First Families of Tennessee and I tried to establish a connection with him but could not make the connection. Recently came across a website which listed a Peter Orandt and a Jacob Orandt as being at Long Island with Washington in 1776, and I believe they were Palatines from Germany. I am trying to work from that end now as I am kinda at a standstill working backward. Know my Jacob was born 1784 in Lincoln County NC, so know John from Rockingham was not in my direct line. I thought for awhile the Alexander listed as Alice in the Rockingham census for 1830 was mine, but I pretty much gave up on that when I realized where his descendants spread to. Mine came up from Lincoln County NC through Wilkes and Burke County to Washington County TN. My gg grandfather Peter Washington Orren died as a POW during the Civil War and his children all remained in Northeast Tennessee at least as late as the 1890s and I know where most of them are buried. I think John Orrand probably came down the Great Wagon Road from Pennsylvania with the other thousands who came that way. In the book "A Collection of upwards of Thirty Thousand Names of German, Swiss, Dutch, French and Other Immigrants in Pennsylvania from 1727 to 1776 with a Statement of the Names of Ships, whence they sailed, and the date of their arival in Philadelphia, chronologically arranged" there is a list of "foreigners imported in the ship Hope, Lindon, Daniel Reed, Master, from Rotterdam, qualified August 28, 1833, Peter Aarond and Herman Arand, also listed as Pitter Arnt..21, Harmon Arnt..50, Ana Katrina Arnt..27, Ana Margaret Arnt..48, Migerd Arnt...13, and Ana Marie Arnt...8. There is also a Johan Bernhardt Arnt Sept 11, 1731 in the Ship Pennsylvania Merchant, John Stedman, Master, from Rotterdam, with Women above 16 Maria Arent, and children under 16 Abraham Arent, Jacob Arent, David Arent, Catrina Arent. Maryland Revolutionary War Records include a John Peter Arnand, a 1753 naval prisoner, and then there is also the Peter Arandt and Jacobus Arandt who arrived in Philadelphia in 1764 (Philadelphia Archives, page 459). The Arant family in Chesterfield, SC, also repeats the same names of Peter, Thomas, William, Jacob that appear in my family so at least one researcher there thinks it likely that our families are connected. Hope some of this gives you a fresh lead.

I beleive this is the same Jacob Orren I have been looking for. The information that I have found is that he was born in Lincoln county, NC in 1786. His wife Polly was also born in Lincoln county, but in 1787.I think they were probably born in the northern part of Lincoln Co., in what is now Catawba County. (Catawba was split from Lincoln in 1842.)I too found that Jacob lived in Wilkes Co. in 1840, and in Caldwell Co. in 1850.He probably didn't even move. The county lines were changing at that time, and Caldwell Co. was created from Burke Co. and part of Wilkes Co. Also I saw that in the 1850 census Jacob had two girls living in his home. Their names were Eveline Orren, age 19, and Ann Orren, age 18. They must have been Granddaughters since Jacob was 64 at that time. I am still trying to find the names of Jacobs' parents and his children.

Please remember when doing your search on dates back in the 1800 give or take 5 years or so because alot of people then didnt know how old they were, how to spell, etc....Also Orren/Orand/Orrand named there children the same names in research dated back to 1760. That is generation after generation after generation. I have at least 4 grandfathers named John. Good luck in your research. By the way I live in Wilson Co.

My birth certificate has my first name as "Orrin" with the "i" marked through with a pen and an "e" put above it. A man born in Israel told me it is a common name in Israel and means "Willowy Tree".
I was born in 1927 and am curious how my Mother came up with that name since it appears to be an uncommon one in the midwest and Florida. My ancestors were from England and Scotland and my parents met in Maine.
Any ideas?

Re: Jacob Orren

I have a little information on Jacob Orren, Bondsman for Sarah Orand and Aaron Fortner 2/13/1831, Wilks Co. NC. Jacob(I think, not proven yet) was either Sarah's brother or father. More than likely a brother. Back in the day, brothers were bondsman for each other.
My family tree proven goes back to John Orand married to Charolette Linder from Rockingham NC. settled in Woodbury TN and was probadly a brother to Jacob. The spelling was really off back then for Samuel Johnson did not introduce the dictionary until 1790 and in the south did not get introduced until about 1820's according to my grandfathers school teacher(Mr. LLoyd Bogel died at 103).
There is a book "The Journal of Rockingham County History and Genealogy" this could be a great resource. I have not read it all but have had the honor of reading a section called the "Philips Letters" and it had some great information.
My research was hard to put in prospective until I talked to some historians that work at the Wilson Co. TN Archives. Understanding the way they lived, married, and had babies at the age of 50 that was not unusual, helped alot.
Look for land records on Jacob, also look for information on the witness W.Davenport and it could give you some idea of where they did live and what his connection was wether its a friend, or some kind of family.Sometimes circumstancal evidence is all your gonna get, but some much so you'll know. I have more information on other Orren/Orran/Orrand and various other spellings. If insterested e-mail me MercmanR4@aol.com.
Good Luck
Jacqueline Orrand
I response to some of your questions.
I have Peter W. Orren listed as born in NC (however another source lists IReland) on 10-24-1823. I also noticed that there was a lot of loudermilk information in Nancys Bible but never could find a link to the family. I also found a note in the Bible of a Charlotte Augusta Orren(b 2-25-1872)(m. 12-24-1891) and a Eliza Francis Orren (1868) and can not tie them in anywhere. Do you have nay ideas? I do have some notes from a gentleman in Texas by the name of bill that shows that Molly married a Robert Loudymil and wonder if hs was of the Loudermilks mentioned in the family Bible. I have an 8x10 copy of a photo of James Martin Orrens family in approx. 1912.
Well, I need to run for now but, I have plenty more I would love to share with you.
Searching for information on parents of Pleasant ORREN born (according to best information available) in Tennessee. He came to what is now Nevada County Arkansas settling near Prescott about 1830. He served in the Civil War as a chaplain according to his grave headstone in Mount Moriah Cemetary in Nevada County AR near Prescott. The original headstone was removed and replaced by the United Daughters of the Confederacy. He married a Mary Jane or Mary Elizabeth Bennett, dau of Richard Allen Bennett and Mary Munn. .

I have found the surname variously spelled ORAN, ORRAN, OREN, ORREN, ORIN, ORRIN. I have found him referred to by the following first names: Pleasant, Plez, Pleas, Phlez, Phleas.

I am glad to share any information I may have.

Contact me at ilatoney@hotmail.com.
