Hi, Just read your post and hope I can help you locate your Grandpa.

If he worked for the RR as a "section helper", that would mean he worked for Maintenance of Way.

Contact the RR Retirement Board in Chicago, Il, via online, and go from there.

I hope you know which RR he worked for but ... if you know his state, city, etc., it's easy to find out which RR occupied that area at the time; either past or present.

Obit: Gilbert Ortega

Albuquerque Journal - October 3, 2003

Gilbert Ortega, 67, legendary Native American art dealer and entrepreneurial icon died Tuesday, September 30, of complications of diabetes. Born April 19, 1936 in Holbrook, he was a fourth generation Arizonan, a descendant of pioneer settlers and Indian traders. Ortega's entrepreneurial roots took hold as a child while working in his father's reservation trading post along a stretch of Route 66, in Lupton, Arizona. By the age of 10, he was pumping gas and stocking shelves in the store. The business became as natural as the rugged landscape, as unique as the Navajo people who traded there, and as diverse as the tourists who stopped to buy gifts. "That was the only way to learn the intricacies of this business," Ortega said in a recent interview. "Growing up in that environment was an education in itself." Determined, enthusiastic, and competitive, his goal was to eventually build his own business. The fifth of seven children of Max and Amelia Ortega, he would become a self-made man. When he was 20, along with his wife Linda Vanderwagen, he went to work at his eldest brother Armand's trading post in southern New Mexico. There, with Armand as his mentor and teacher, he learned the next level of the business. A couple of years later when he ventured out on his own, he came face to face with misfortune and failure, and struggled for several years. He knew he couldn't quit, so with nothing but sheer guts, he kept trying. "In looking back, I realize that failure had a defining effect on every future decision I made," he said recently. "I wouldn't trade any of those experiences. Success is failure turned inside out." After years struggle, he gave it another try. In the mid-60's when I-40 was paving the way to bypass Route 66, Ortega built a new store on a reservation interchange, and he began experiencing some success. Expansion soon followed, and his dreams began to be realized. Soon after, he opened a location in Gallup, New Mexico where he established himself in the wholesale Indian jewelry business. This would also prove to be a huge success. In family tradition, he began training his four children in all facets of the business. By the mid 70's, Indian jewelry had gained such popularity, that the business boomed, and Ortega's wholesale operation soared. And like a turquoise tornado, Ortega took advantage of every business opportunity that arose. Working nonstop, he opened stores in other areas of New Mexico, Texas, and Arizona at whirlwind speed. By 1977 he had 16 stores. At that time, Ortega decided to sell his chain of stores. Between ventures, he pursued a dream from his high school days when he had a western band. He went to Nashville and recorded an album of old favorites in English and Spanish, "The King of Indian Jewelry Goes Country." The first single, "Is It Wrong," hit the top hundred in Billboard and Cash Box, and became number 13 in Phoenix. By 1980 he had moved to Scottsdale and started another chain--opening 22 stores all over the Valley. A consummate businessman, Ortega also invested in prime Scottsdale real estate. Always improving and raising the bar, Ortega, along with his four children developed his retail concept into today's sophisticated Scottsdale galleries, becoming one of the largest Native American art dealers in the country--and often defined as the king of Indian jewelry. His career spanned nearly 50 years, and he credited his achievement to hard work and integrity. "Success requires ambition, persistence, good judgment, and old-fashioned work, work, work," he said recently. "But I love what I do so much, that it doesn't feel like work." Now at the helm of the business, his son, Gilbert Ortega, Jr.; and his three daughters, Gayle Ortega, Desiree Ortega and Renee Ortega-Schmidt, will continue to carry on the family tradition. In addition to his four children, Gilbert Ortega is also survived by former wife, Linda Vanderwagen Ortega; two brothers, Armand and Dennis Ortega, sister, Esther Andre; seven grandchildren, and one great grandchild. He is preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Dewey, Aggie and Max Ortega. Visitation will be held Sunday, October 5, 2003 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Messinger Mortuary, 7601 E. Indian School Rd., Scottsdale, AZ. Funeral Services will be held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 10815 N. 84th St., Monday, October 6, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. Private Burial Services to follow. Pallbearers are D.J. Ortega-Stanford, Gilbert Ortega III, Armand Ortega Jr., Max Ortega III, Veon mcCarrell, Arthur Ortega. Honorary Pallbearers are Robin Sarracino, Jim Hurlbut, Franklin Zecca, Joe Atkinson, Dave Stocking, Joaquin Torres, Mike Haj, Dino Shatilla, and Bob Khalaf. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower, Phx., AZ 85014; or the Muscular Dystrophy Assoc., 10201 S. 51st ST. Phx, AZ, 85044; or the Gilbert Ortega Native American Education Fund, 3925 N. Scottsdale Rd., Scottsdale, AZ 85251.

Jaime, Was I surprised to see your post! Yes we related! I am the son of Conrado Ortega who is is the oldest son of Juan and Rallitos. We have just held her 100th birthday party recently. She is still going strong. We (my cousin Olympia Ortega-Gregory) who is the daughter of Viola and George, put on a slideshow presentation of her life using a LCD projector. I also took semi-formal pictures of all the families in attendance. Alas, Johnny Ortega, my uncle recently passed away. He was the last male of that generation. Please send me your address as I'd be happy to burn you a CD with photos. I think at least one of the photos has Enoch circa 1940 with his family. Please keep in touch. I'd love to hear more of you and yours.

Mario Ortega
1679 Saint Helena Dr
Danville, CA 94526
m_ortega@pacbell.net
ortega@slac.stanford.edu

Dear Mario

My name is Jaime Ortega, and I am the son of Enoch Ortega. I have lived in Madrid Spain for 23 years. If this is the same man, Juan Ortega and Rallitos Ortega then we are family. He was the son of Jose Urbano Ortega, and Gregorita Cordova. I think that they had many children, Sofia, Regina, Juan, Hannibal, Samuel, Gregorita, Beatriz, Joe, Lola and my father Enoch. Unfortunately all have passed away.

I knew Tio Juan and Tia Rallitos He died in 1965 in Oakland and I got to know some of my primos (Tio Juan's Children) during his funeral. My dad along with Tio Hannibal presided in the service and a lutheran pastor I think presided in his funeral.

As far as the Ortega side and I think a know quite a bit about this area we are all from a man whose name was, Gabriel Ortega and He married an Ana Lopez in 1730. Many early generations after said that he was from Galicia. We are of Jewish origen (conversos). Your name Vigil is a typical name of Asturian origin (Northern Spain). I go there a lot!

I hope that I can hear from you because I remember one of the Daughers of Tio Juan was married to a man whose last name was Gregory (I think) and he had a son whose name was Johnny.

Anyway it was a very pleasant surprise to read you letter. My wife is Spanish (Catalan) and my children are both nationalities, American and Spanish.

I hope that you can tell me what has happened to all my primos since it has been close to 30-40 years since I have heard from all of them and I think it is because all your information can't be coincidence.

Un abrazo desde España

Jaime Ortega

My grandfather was Pablo Ortega. My grandmother was Dolores Tafoya. Her mother was a Romero. Heard of any of those folk? I believe my grandfather may have been an only child. I am dying to learn more.
Thank you, Thank you.

Francisco Ortega Family

Hooray, someone else is looking for the elusive Ortegas. They have been most difficult to track. My great grandmother Maria del Refugio Ortega had 4 brothers: Jose, Francisco, Bartolo and Cipriano. Their parents were Gabino Ortega and Isidora Ortiz Parra, just recently I came across a Rita Parra as possibly being Isidora's mother. It's possible as Refugio named her first daughter Rita, who died in infancy, and then later named another daughter Rita. My grandmother Bartola Ortega Celeya Daniel named one of her daughters Rita, so it appears to be a family name. They spend much time in California in the early 1800's, traveling yearly between Sonora and California and finally returning permanently to Sonora about 1870. Apparently Francisco had only daughters and the first 2/3/4? of them were born in California, probably at Rosa de Castilla, a ranch of the San Gabriel Mission. I have a photo of who I think is the Ortega family taken about 1850. It shows an elderly woman sitted with 4 men beside her, 3 females and 2 men standing and several children. Sadly all the older relatives who might know who they are have all passed away. I will be happy to share with you what info I have. You can e-mail me at LadyEliot@aol.com

Ortega Family

Hooray, someone else is trying to find the Ortegas. They have been most elusive. My great grandmother, Ma del Refugio Ortega had four brothers: Bartolo, Cipriano, Francisco and Jose. Her father was Gabino Ortega and her mother Isidora Ortiz Parra, I have recently heard the name Rita Parra as perhaps being Isidora's mother and that could be as Refugio named her first daughter Rita, who died as an infant. She later named another daughter Rita. My grandmother, Bartola Ortega Celeya also named a daughter Rita. So that name has carried. I have a copy of a photo that I believe is of the Ortega family. It show a elderly lady, perhaps Isidora with four men sitted beside her. It shows three females and a couple of other men plus some children. Francisco had only daughters and the older one were born in San Gabriel, CA. All the Ortega family returned to Sonora about 1870. Oral family tradition has it that the Ortega/Celaya and one other family (Ortiz, Parra? not sure which one) used to travel between San Gabriel and Sonora yearly and all three families were related. Any info you have would be greatly appreciately. I will be glad to share all that I have with you.
I am also an Ortega, with "converso" ancestors, and whose family has always engaged in "Crypto Jewish" practices. Have you had your DNA tested? If so, what did you discover? I tested, and found that Y-DNA Haplogroup is E1b1b1c, which tends to confirm my ancestry.

My Great Grandfather was Regino Ortega(1850?-1895?) & Hia C-ed O'odham from Dome Yuma Arizona. The village was called Hi Lo and was a few miles east of Yuma. I've seen a census that had Adolfo as "Papago" do you know if he was related to the Ortega's who were from this region. My Great Grandfather was married to Francisca Garcia(1872?-1900)also Hia C-ed O'odham. Her known children were duaghter (my Grandmother) Maria Regina Susana Ortega(1888-1944)a son Jose Maria Garcia aka Jose Maria Coz(1886-1918?). Francisca later Married Miguel Coz Sr. together they had 5 daughters, my Grandmother's 1/2 sisters. I'm not certain but I think i've seen that Ms. Mary Johnson was from one of the Colorado River Tribes of Yuma: Quechan or Cocopah.

My grandmother's name is Viola Ortega-Coffman and said that she was from an Apache reservation in Arizona. That's all I have.

my email is harveymail@msn.com if this info is relevant for you.

Re: Mary Stanislausa Ortegus/Ortegas Sallas -1865 - 1930

Merrill, Mary is my great-grandmother. Her son Willard Andrew Sallas is my mother's father. Mary and Andrew are buried in a small cemetary in or at the edge of Mayport, FL, a suburb of Jacksonville, which was a one-street town when they lived there and is now a huge Navy base. Mary and Andrew had several children and I can remember Uncle Camile and possibly Tito, and a sister Catherine, all of whom are deceased. Aunt Catherine has a son, Robert Sallas, who still lives in Jax and can probably give you a lot more info on the family than I can. There is also some interesting info in the Duval County Library in Jax. An interesting family tidbit - Mary died on 9/19/30, which was my mother's 6th birthday (Lydia Mae Sallas). My grandfather Willard died on my 6th birthday, 6/2/1950, at age 50, and Willard's first wife, Charlotte, my mother's mother, died on my 36th birthday, 6/2/1980. Willard is buried in Stuart, FL, as are my mother and stepfather. Hope this has helped. I may come to you for info as I have just started my family search. My mother's mother was English and all of us (aunt, cousins, me) look like her. My mother is the only one who looked like Willard and the other Sallas members. When Aunt Catherine died, we went to the funeral and when we walked in my mother looked just like everyone else and my aunt and I were the "odd looking" ones. Please let me know if I can help further. Dianne Houston Rogers - dianne189@aol.com
