I was searching for info for my GG grandfather John Orth, and happened to find your post regarding your grandfather Harold Orth.
I am your mom's cousin Gayle. I heard that your mom had moved to Oregon, but sadly haven't kept in touch.
I know your mom will remember her Aunt Maji, (my mother)
My mother passed away last year.
I remember Uncle Harold and Aunt Doris very well. Both were very sweet. My Mom, dad and I would visit them at their home in Vallejo, California. Uncle Harold, was my Grandmother Lillian Weber's, brother.

My great grandfather who came to America was named Christian Orth. He had a brother named John and a sister named Susanna. I don't know anything about his siblings except that they both came to America too. I recall a story about a cousin who was still in Europe and was a big name musician, his name was Bernard Orth. I can't seem to find anything on him either. I'll have to pull my documentation on my great grandfather and find out what town/village he came from and write back.

My great grandmother was Anne Lucille Burk J(Birk) Orth, later Eichenberger then later yet Sager. Her first husband was an Oth who was killed the firt battle of Wounded Knee. They had a son Benjamin. He died at a young age of perhaps 14. He was about 7 years or so older than my grandfather, Albert Clarence Eichenberger. Grandpa also had a sister Mary Eichenberger and a brother Robert Eichenberger who were older than he. Grandpa was born in 1900 in Gordon Nebraska. My mother is Louise Joan Eichenberger Wildey. Does this sound familiar? My mom's mother was Laura Mettler and she was born around Scotland South Dakota. Does any of this sound familiar?
Leigh Wildey Sullivan

John,
Thank you so much!!! This is amazing stuff!! Your information all looks to be right on the bullseye. Some great "detective" work here, and your knowledge of the area of western Germany where the Orth's came from is impressive. Thanks again so much! Your information is of enormous help!
Vince

Thanks for the information John! All the information I have on Margaret is from later census records and from her son Henry's death certificate that states his mother's maiden name was Orth. On later census records (1900, 1920) Margaret states she was born @ 1842 and came to the U.S. from Prussia in 1857. In 1880 she and Gahard are living in Stearns County, MN, he age 54, she 40. Their oldest child, Catherine is 17 (so born abt. 1863), born in MN. Their other children listed were;
Susan 16
Mathias 14
Mary 12
Antonette 10
Francis 7
Elizabeth 1
Brother Albert Ebben is living with them as well.

So, it is possible that they were not yet in MN in 1860.

* Am doing this research for good friend of mine so these are not my people - most of my ancestors were mountain folk from eastern KY.

Thanks again John, if you see anything else that may be of help, please let me know!
Vince

Re: Orth/Meinecke Milwaukee

I am researching the Milwaukee Orth family for my first cousin. I am putting together a tree on Ancestry using old family notes. Phillip Orth b 1845 d 1937 was the son of Adam Orth b 1809 Germany and Elizabeth von Lining b 1809 b near Mainz d 1846. Phillip married Martha Marie Meinecke my dates are b 1865 and died 20th Dec 1937.
The names of the siblings I have for Philip are:
William b 1832 d 186?
George b 1834
Adam 1836
Carl b 1838 d abt. 1852
John b 1840 Germany d 1896 e (emigrated ?) 12-1854 c (citizen ?) 8-15-1863
Daniel b 1841
Maria b 1843 married Doerr
Heinrich who died at birth 1846 the year his mother died.

My cousin's family descends from the John Orth Augusta Kilian family. Sometime in the 20th century John Orth's descendants, named Riedl, attended a ceremony when a street in Milwaukee was named for their Meinecke cousins. And currently I live on a block in Wauwatosa that is bordered on the south by Meinecke Street
Would love to make contact.

Mary
Hello,

I know this post is kinda late but I am looking into the history of my family and my Maiden name is Orth. My Dad and his family are from St. Paul Minnesota/Minnetonka, Minneapolis. His name is James and his father’s name is William “Bill” Orth. It caught my attention when you said nuns because they are very faithful to the church-no nuns that I know of though.

If you found any other information about the Orth's, please reply.

Thanks!

Jaime
Hello Martha,
I have in my family tree a family ORTH Johann and Barbara MAAS (1st marriage) and Johann ORTH and Katharina MAYER (2nd marriage) of Schwalbach, Saarland, Germany, which some their children would have left to the USA about 1837.
Do we have the same family ?
Cordially.
