if any of the elders of our extensive Osgood clan or at least the ones out in the Andover area would be will to plan a "reunion" or gathering of Osgoods for 2018...the 380th anniversary of Osgoods in America. Where maybe tours and such can be set up or points of Osgood interest...and maybe about the biggest family picnic EVER... where people can exchange information on their lines?

Just a thought.

so after much help from other wonderful and awesome Osgoods...I found my correct Osgood Path...and I am not a decendant of Christopher...but of John!!

On this site it is all too easy to take other people's info that they have "collected" rather than researched...and follow the wrong path. so one big lesson learned. it takes less time to do your own research than to follow other people's mistakes!!

so...I was also wondering...for you elder Osgood's, especially those of you in the Andover area...or else where in NE...are there any sort of regular Osgood "reunions" or Conventions or are there going to be any planned for in the future?

Hey Paul. My name is Kathie as well. hehehe. and I think he was asking if I knew who Emma was. but I agree with you. I haven't (not that I recall) come across an Emma either. the only Osgoods I've come across in England were John's parents (my original American Osgood Immigrant) and John's grandfather. John's parents were Robert and Joan. and His grandfather was Peter. I know that John had siblings...but not sure if one of them was an Emma.

Hi Mr. Brown:
Ancestry forwarded your email to the Osgood family. I put up most of the info. Kathy is my daughter.
I do not recall coming across an Emma Osgood. Our family came from the immigration of three brothers, William, John an Christopher. They arrived in colonies between 1632 and 1638. They originated from southern England, in the vicinity of Winchester. Of course, there were Osgoods continuing to live there after that. Space is limited here but I could give you more information if you wish. I do have a few references from the UK but when my ancestors left everything shifted to the colonies. Let me know.
Paul Osgood
prosgood@gmail.com

I haven't done much research in England.

If you haven't already done so, You might want to focus your research around Wherewell where my ancestor, Christopher Osgood, emigrated from in 1634 or Marlboro, where he was married in 1634.

Hi All,
Can anyone help me? I'm researching my husbands side of the family tree. and I have got stuck in the 1600's some would say that getting that far is great but I'm hungry for more information and also to see if we are related to the brothers that went to America.

So the earliest Osgood I have is John and he was born in and around 1651, he married Joan Hulbert in Amesbury, Wiltshire England in1681.

They had 10 children, those of which I have some information on are John Osgood born 1681 and Abraham Osgood born in 1698.

My family come down through John b1681 who married Abigale Andrews in Amesbury England and they had 11 children.

John and Abigale had a son called John born in 1716 who married Sarah Brunsdon, they had 5 children

Their son William was born in 1759 and he married Philles Ranger

and so the line continues ..............................
the family were shoemakers or Cordwainers

Can anyone help me get back to a later date

Thanks

Jo

I am interested in the Wilson line because I know nothing about my grandmother Agnes Wilson. My father, Levi, was adopted and raised in Charlevoix with his brother Eugene. My uncle Jay was raised in Detroit along with my Aunt Gladys. I believe that she died in her teens.

I saw some papers on my Mom's "Osgood" family history and learned that they were from the Boston,MA area. There was an especially interesting story about a well known witch that was observed levitating over a lake or pond. She was apparently one of my great, great, etc....grandmothers.I would be interested in learning more about her, but I was young when I read it and haven't seen the papers since. I don't know her name, there was mention of a great,etc...grandfather being a Post Master General or something. I would really like to know more!

Salem Quarterly Court Records and Files

Salem Quarterly Court Records and Files, June 1659, has this, pp. 158 - 160. I added some slashes because it was all run together, and I added a few letters in brackets because it's very difficult to read.

Esabell houldred hearing a voyce and being aflicted in her body...Thomas Hayne deposed that being with Goodwife Holdridge she told mee that shee saw a great horse & shewed me where it stood...immediately after shee was taken with extremety of feare & payne so that she p'sently fel[l] into a sweat & I thought she would swoone away: she trembled & shooke like a leafe.

Nath. Gould testified that being with Godway holdred [one] night thar appeared a great Snake as shee sayd with open mouth & Shee being weak hardly able to goe alone yet then ran & lyd hold of nathan gould by the head & cold not speak for the space of halfe anower.

Isabel Holdred deposed that John Godfree came to the house where Henry Blasdal, her husband, & herselfe were & demanded a debt of her husband & said a warrant was out & Goodman Lord was suddenly to come / John Godfree asked if we would not pay him / the deponent answered yes, tonight or tomorrow if we had it: for I believe we shall not___ we are in thy debt. John Godfree answered thats a bitter word: sayd I must begin & must send Goodman Lord. The deponent answered when thou wilt / I fear the[e] not nor all the devils in Hell; and farther deponent testifieth that two days after this shee was taken with those strange fits with which shee was tormented a foughnight together night & day; & severall ap[par]itions ap[peare]d to the deponent in the night. The first night a Humbl bee, the next night a beare [appeared] wch grouned the teeth & shooke the claw, thou sayst thou art not afraid / then thinkst Harry Blasdals house will saue thee / the deponent answered I hope the Lord Jesus Christ will saue me / the apition then spake / thou sayst thou art not affraid of all the devils in Hell but I will haue thy heart blood within a fewe houres / the next was the apition of a great snake at wch the Deponent was exceedingly affrighted & [the apparition] skipt to Nathan Gold who was in the opposite chimney corner and caught hold of the hayre of his head & her speech was taken away for ye space of halfe an houre; the next night [appeared] a great horse & Thomas Hayne being there the deponent told him of it & shewed him where [it was] / the sd. Tho. Hayne took a stick & [struck] at the plac where the apition was & his stroake glanced by the side of it & it went ___ the table & he went to strike againe / then the apition fled...

William Osgood deposed that in [August 16]40, he being then building a barn for Mr. Spencer, John Godfree being then Mr. Spencers herdsman, he [Godfree] on an evening came to the farm where men were at work and sayd that he had gotten a new master against the time he had done keeping cows / Willi Osgood asked him who it was / he answered he knew not / he againe asked him where he dwelt / he answered he knew not / he asked him what his name was / he answered he knew not. He then sayd to him how then wilt thou go to him when thy time is out / he sayd the man will come & fetch me / W. O. asked him hast thou made an absolute bargaine / he answered that a covenant was made he had set his hand to it / he then asked of him whether he had not a counter covenant / godfree answered no. W. O. sayd what a mad fellow art thou to make a covenant in this manner / he sayd hees an hones[t] man / how knowest thou says W. O. / Godfree answed he looks like one / W. O. then answered I am p[er]suaded thou hast made a covenant with the devill / [Godfree] then skiped about & sayd I ptesse; I ptesse.
__________
What Isabel reported sounds like ergot poisoning, and there is a theory that ergot poisoning of grain, especially rye, might have been behind the witch trials of 1691-2. Ergot is used in ergotamine (for migraines) & also contains lysergic acid, from which LSD is made.

Isabel & Wm. HOLDRIDGE (ca. 1610 - 1680) had son Wm. HOLDRIDGE (1648 - 1729), who married Lydia QUIMBY, daughter of Robert QUINBY & Elizabeth Osgood, who was dau/o William OSGOOD, above.

Re: Salem Quarterly Court Records and Files

I read a story from my mother's big book of family history (that she can't currently find...of course because that is the one that has all the stories in it...) about our Osgood Ancestor Tried as a witch...
However the story went that She was Arrested and when brought to trial, she proclaimed in court that she was a witch...so they let her go.

Because apparently it was only when you denied being a witch that they hanged or burned you!!

so then after the trials were declaired unlawful...she then recanted and "came clean" and told everyone that she was in fact NOT a witch...she just didn't want to be hanged.

so...we may have ancestors that were smokin' some pretty funky stuff!! BUT...at least we have a few that were smart enough to not get hanged!!

Re: Research on Osgood's

The three Osgood brothers arrived in America between 1632 and 1638. I believe their home before immigrating was Wherewell, in Southern England near Salisbury. John and Christopher came first followed by William who was single when he arrived. William accompanied John's wife and family.
Would recommend the book on Osgoods published in 1894 by Putnam press. Compiled by Ira Osgood. Family History centers seem to have a copy. I have my own. I hope this helps. If I can be of further assistance please email me directly at "prosgood@earthlink.net".
Regards
Paul Osgood

George Pettit Osgood

I'm looking for the parents or any other information on a George Pettit Osgood, born 6 Apr 1881 in Canajoharie, Montgomery, NY. As the name Pettit is not a common middle name, I think that it may be a family name from his mother.

George was living in Westford MA in 1900 census with his uncle Charles Erwin Osgood and his wife Effie Jane (Hulsaver) and their three children. George married Maude Frances Young in Cambridge MA in 1905, and then moved to Concord, NH.

George listed Effie Osgood as his next of kin on his WWI draft card. I'm hoping that by find the parents of George, I can trace Charles Erwin Osgood.

Has anyone run into any Osgoods who may have married into the Pettit/Petit family from NY? If so, I'd appreciate any info you could send me.

Charles Erwin is a rather large brick wall that no one has been able to punch through in the last 10 years of research. Pettit may be the clue as this is the only time that I can find the name in any family records.

George Pettit Osgood

I'm looking for information about the parents of George Pettit Osgood, born 6 Apr 1881 in Canajoharie, NY. George was living with his uncle, Charles Erwin Osgood in 1900 in Westford, MA. George married Maude Young?, born 1883. Their children included Bernice Doris, born 1907; George B born 1911; Howard W born 1914; Wilma L born 1916; and Francis N, born 1921. George P listed my gg-grandmother Effie Jane Osgood as his next of kin on his WW1 draft registration.

I'd like to find out the parents of George P, as they would give me a clue to finding my gg-grandfather Charles Erwin prior to the 1900 census- my brick wall.

Has anyone found a Charles Pettit Osgood in any of their research?
