I am trying every spelling of this name that I can think of! There is a mystery with Seth. He went by Seth 'Sanders' until he died, but we have come to believe he changed his name sometime before his first marriage. This is why we believe this, and what we have on him:
He was born in Missouri Oct. 18, 1872 (we believe that the year may be wrong, because he told second wife years later that he was actually older than he told her, but we don't know anything more), d. July 15, 1966. He had been married to Mahala unknown, who was born July 1876, and they had 3 daughters: Ella b. abt 1896 in Mo., Martha b. May 1897, and Gracie b. Nov. 1899. This family (except Ella -- why, we don't know) was on the 1900 census, but by the 1910 census (Kelly Township, Carter County, MO), he was already with his second wife, no listing of the previous children. He had told his daughter-in-law years later that his first wife had died, as well as Martha and Gracie, and that he had left Ella with a group of Indians after they died until he could go after her later. Ella was in the 1920 census with Seth in Black Rock, Ar. listed as Ella Curtis, widow, and supposed 23 (I think she may have been 20 and lied about it for some reason, as she wasn't in the 1900 census) with her daughter, Mary Curtis. Seth had said his mother's name was Cynthia Louisa. She died in 1892 and was burried in St. Joseph Mo. Chrondoldt, per her request.

Now for the real MYSTERY! Sometime when his second set of children were small, a John 'Usher/Ussher' showed up, introduced by Seth as his cousin, but later, John told Seth's wife, Martha that he wasn't Seth's cousin, but his BROTHER! Another time, John showed up with a head bullet wound to be nursed to health. Also, Seth had told his dauther-in-law that he had taken his mother's body by train to St. Joseph, Mo., but that he had to leave all the luggage, because 'THEY' were waiting for him, and he laughted because 'THEY' didn't get him. He was secretive about his past, about, until he was close to dying, then he didn't say much. One of his children had once commented that she wondered if they were related to all the Sanders not too far from them, but Seth had told her there was no way they were related to them. Once Seth had been coversing with his 'cousin', John, behind a shed, where none of the family was supposed to be, and one of the kids snuck out there and overheard them talking about their past (nothing he could make out). At one time, Seth had claimed to be the only son of the only son, but how can that be, if John was his brother?

Was Seth in some sort of trouble with the law, maphia, etc?
Why did he leave his daughter, Ella with a group of Indians, instead of any in-laws when his wife and other children died.
HOW did his wife and children die, and why didn't he ever talk about them?
Why would have Seth changed his name, if it was Usher/Ussher?
Why would John Usher/Ussher have lied about his relation to Seth, if he wasn't his brother?

If anyone can give clues to Seth's background or ancestry, it would be greatly appreciated!
