Osman in Somerset

Hi
I have traced my surname back and have my great, great grandfather William Osman who originally came from Somerset (he moved to Wales where he married and our family has since been). His parents were James and Sarah Osman. In the 1861 census I have them as living in Cannington in Somerset. William had the following siblings - Maryann Osman, John Osman, Thomas Osman, James Osman. If anyone has any info on Osmans in somerset around this time I would love to hear from you. Im particularly interested in tracking down Thomas (aged approx 5 in the 1861 census). He appears on my g.g.grandfathers death certificate in 1892 (in Cardiff) but his address is Barn St in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire. Ive checked the 1891 and 1881 census but cant find Thomas. If anyone knows anything of him I would be very interested.
Osman family health

Can/will anyone comment on what health issues may have come down his/her Osman line? Most especially I'm interested in whether other branches of the clan are affected by bi-polar disorder, formerly known as obsessive-compulsive disorder. One of my children has been diagnosed, and it was thought the gene came down another line, but one of my Osman cousins had a sister diagnosed with it, also, which has gotten us wondering! Thanks, in advance, for your willingness to discuss. Please email privately if you wish, cabwms@gmail.com.

Searching for information on the family of Simon Osman(1808-1876) who lived in Ohio. He was married to Mary Ann Parks. I think that he had the following Children, but I am trying to verify this: Miranda b.1833, Charles b. 1835, Simon b. 1838-1920, Mary Ann b. 1840, William b. 1842, Isaac b. 1848, and Jane b. 1848.
I am looking for obituaries, current decedents, census record, and any information on this family.
So far what I have found out is that Simon was the son of Charles Osman (1761-1837) who was married to Kezziah Higgins (b.1770)
Hello,
I have traced my 3rd great-grandfather, John OSMAN, born circa 1810 to the Schuylkill Co., PA, area. Through perponderance of evidence, it appears his parents may be John OSMAN and Catherine SCHROPE that went to Seneca Falls, Seneca Co., PA, without him. - Please feel free to visit my family website 'OSMANs and Others'; URL http://osman.tribalpages.com. Everything I have is there. Would like to add any additions or corrections to it. I will give you credit for any information. - My OSMAN line may be from the Thomas OSMAN of Long Island, NY. I need to find an OSMAN male relative to do the DNA test. - ~Blessings, Bev

Searching for Parents of Isaac Osman, Shamokin, PA

I am trying to find parents of Isaac Osman from Shamokin, PA, Northumberland Co.

He was born in Nov 1846 and died 12 Nov 1906. I have tons of info on his Wife Harriet S. Bordner, and his children,Emma M, Minnie N, William F, Alice L, but I can't seem to find any info about his parents/grandparents.

His wife Harriet was remarried to a Frank E. Osman/Osmun after his death so it is possible that he and Frank were related.

The rumor is that either Isaacs dad or grandfather came from Turkey but I cant prove this either.

In 1860 there are 2 records for Isaac Osman in Pennsylvania, 1 born abt 1855 and 1 born abt 1848.

I thought the 1848 one was probably the one I wanted as the cencus says: Household: John Osman 40 PA, Mary A Osman 40 PA, John Osman 16 PA, Isaac Osman 12 PA, Mary Miller 15

But, One reason I cant call John a positive match as his father is because according to familysearch.org, the Isaac Osman born in 1848 birth and death date do not match up with the the Issac I am looking for.

Familysearch has an Isaac born 21 MAY 1848 Harrisburg, Dauphin, Pennsylvania and a death of 16 DEC 1880. My Isaac was born November 1846 and died 12 Nov 1906. I know this info to be correct based on his headstone and cemetery records in Shamokin, PA.

I am looking for a document that says who Issac's dad was before I call it a possitive match. So far I havent found any record of Isaac that lists his dads name.
I am looking for information/liniage/family of Isaac Osman and his wife Harriet. I am told he came to America from Turkey by way of France around 1880, but have no way to verify this.

I am also told his wife, Harriet S., was an American Indian with the last name of Bourdnor, although the spelling may not be correct on that. I am seeking her correct surname.

Leads I have are that Isaac was born November 1846 in Turkey and Died around Nov. 12, 1906. Harriet died around November 16, 1924. They lived and are burried in Shamokin, PA. They had at least one son named William Francis Osman. in 1887.

OSSMAN/OSMAN from PA Schuylkill Co (near Hegins) and Dauphin Co. PA Frank B and Mary, Jane/Jennie, Rejina, Rufus, Kate & Addie

Seeking information on this family, Frank B and Mary, Jane/Jennie, Rejina, Rufus, Kate and Addie - particularly Jane aka Jennie. I understand father Frank was a carpenter and also owned a hotel in Berrysburg, Dauphin County, PA.

By censuses, the family appears in Schuylkill County near Hegins, then later in Berrysburg in Dauphin County, and then father Frank is back in Schuylkill County near Hegins with daughter Rejina or Regina and a grandchild Catherine- in this, he indicates he's married, no wife appears in the family census data.

If anyone can shed any light on this family, it would be much appreciated!

PA Osman story/obit found

I found this story/obit in the Baltimore Sun newspaper on the 20th of September. If you are searching the Osmans of Pa then here is a Thoumas Osman, Jr 84 yrs old with apparently no known family left. I hope this will help anyone that is interested.
Good luck with your search
Debbie Osman

Thomas Osman Jr.

[Age 84] The marine engineer participated in the invasion of Italy in 1943 and sailed on more than 25 ships.
By Frederick N. Rasmussen | Sun reporter
September 20, 2007

Thomas Osman Jr., an American merchant marine engineer whose career on the high seas spanned more 30 years and three wars, died Sept. 13 of lung cancer at Stella Maris Hospice in Timonium. The Baldwin resident was 84.

Mr. Osman was born and raised in Quakertown, Pa., and after graduating from high school in 1940, went to work for Bethlehem Steel Corp. in Bethlehem, Pa.

In 1942, Mr. Osman enrolled at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y., and the next year he was a cadet aboard the Liberty ship Ward Hunt.

"We went to Europe in a 40-ship convoy," Mr. Osman told Ernest F. Imhoff, former managing editor of the Evening Sun and author of Good Shipmates: The Restoration of the Liberty Ship John W. Brown 1942-2006. "First trip. It was pretty rough weather. Something must have happened with our mates one night. Morning came, and we were all by ourselves, bouncing around in the middle of the Atlantic.

"The sea was rough. Waves washed two of our lifeboats away. The U-boats were busy. As a single ship, we ended up on a northern stragglers' route to Belfast. We were lucky. In Belfast, we learned the Germans hit our convoy and sunk three or four ships," he said.

"It was the start. I sailed on more than 25 ships. It was always interesting, assistant or chief engineer. I sailed to many countries, never to Russia," Mr. Osman said in the interview. "My wife, Carole, was glad whenever I came home, but she knew the sea was my job. We had no children."

Mr. Osman participated in the invasion of Italy in 1943 and recalled the adverse wartime conditions he and his shipmates labored under trying to unload the ship.

"The Germans were still occupying most of Italy, so while we're doing this they're setting off bombs all around us. Took ten days to unload. We finally left and got back to New York," he said.

Mr. Osman who had earned his third engineer's license and was in the Naval Reserve, tried to join the Navy in 1944; after he was rejected because of nearsightedness, he remained in the merchant marine.

He was in the Pacific aboard a tanker when the war ended.

After studying at the Johns Hopkins University, Mr. Osman went to work as an engineer and later chief engineer for United States Lines from 1946 to 1960.

Mr. Osman went ashore in 1960 and worked for the next decade as a port engineer at Bethlehem Steel's Key Highway shipyard and Maryland Shipbuilding and Drydock Co., until shipping out again in 1970.

From 1971 to 1975, Mr. Osman made three or four voyages a year to Vietnam aboard ships that had been chartered by the military to deliver war materiel.

He retired in 1984, and, after the death of his wife in 1991, Mr. Osman was looking for something to do. So he joined his old colleague and friend from the United States Lines, Delacy "Cookie" Cook, who was also retired and working as chief engineer aboard the John W. Brown.

Mr. Osman spent the next 16 years working aboard the Liberty ship as night engineer, chief engineer, second assistant and third assistant engineer.

"Tommy was one heck of a find. He was also a good engineer and cheerful shipmate," Mr. Cook said. "He was also adept at fixing what needed to be fixed and keeping things rolling in the engine room."

Joe Carbo, another retired ship's engineer who worked with Mr. Osman in the Brown's engine room for a decade, remembered him as "a quiet, modest sort of guy" who was "a damn good engineer who had a world of experience."

It was characteristic of Mr. Osman to always be willing to "pitch in, give advice and use his expertise in helping solve problems. He was unflappable," Mr. Carbo said.

During his maritime career, Mr. Osman never lost a ship and "never lost his love of them," Mr. Imhoff wrote.

Services for Mr. Osman will be held at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 29 at the Mitchell-Wiedefeld Funeral Home, 6500 York Road, Rodgers Forge.

There are no immediate survivors.
Looking for any information on OSMAN, Wincentry (Vinsen) b. 06-29-1888 in Dobczyce, Galacia, Poland/Austria.

Married on abt 1912 probably in Ruda Zazamcze,Dabrowa, Tarnoska,Poland/Austria to GOLONKA, Bronislawa (Bernice) b. 02-06-1892 in Ruda Zazamczze. Bernice came to America (leaving from the port of Antwerp on 10-04-1913 on the SS Koonland) arriving at Ellis Island on 10-17-1913. She came to America after Vinsen (I have not been able to find a passenger list or ship manifest for Vinsen.

They had three children that I know of, boys.
Zygmunt b. 03-09-1913 in Bagienica Poland/Austria d. 03-10-1913 in Bagienica.
Andrew b. 1916 in East St. Louis, IL.
Sigmund b. 1918 in East St. Louis, IL

I was able to find them on the 1920 US Census for them in East St. Louis, IL
They were living at 1118 11 St. in East St. Louis at that time.

Hoping to find any information about them. This is all I have ever been able to find on them.

Happy Hunting-looking for cousins. Mary
Mary

Some sites for research.
A map of Austria with historical region Galicia:
http://users.erols.com/mwhite28/austhung.htm
Galicia site: www.halgal.com
http://maxpages.com/poland
www.pgsa.org
www.surnamenavigator.org
Use an One Step/ Gray form www.stevemorse.org to find your ancestor if he did come thru Ellis Island. It is possible he could have come thru Baltimore, Boston, or Philadelphia.
Luckily only one village named Bagienica and Dobczyce in Poland. Found a Dabrowa Tarnowska which is a big town with 11280 inhabitants. No Ruda Zazamcze but a Ruda Zazameze. A slight misspelling and one can not find a place on any map.
http://mapa.szukacz.pl
Found the villages on this old map:
http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/digkonyv/topo/200e/39-50.jpg
Locate a 10 on the left side and you should be able to see the Ruda Zazameze, Bagienica and Dabrowa. Your Tarnoska might be implying that it should be in area of a town Tarnow, which it is. Check into LDS-Mormons site for any church records.

Hi, I am a first cousin of your grandfather. Leasus. My mother, Evangeline Adams Sheffer was the sister of your great grandmother, Iva Gertrude Adams Osman. She will be celebrating her 100th birthday in a couple of weeks and supplies me with a lot of family info to which I have added quite a bit. I will be glad to send what I have on the Adams family if you are interested.
I remember visiting on the road between Dongola and Cypress when your father and I were just kids. I am just a little older than him, I believe.
I am also working on the Osman family as well as the Davaults. I talked to Mary Belle Penrod Osman Morgan (wife of Leland) just last night to get some of her family as we are also related thru the Penrods.
Hope to hear from you soon,
JRS

Hi Cori Maxwell, I am a first cousin of your grandfather, Ward Osman. My mother, Evangeline Adams Sheffer, and your great grandmother, Iva Gertrude Adams Osman, were sisters. I have been filling in some of the information on your family and would like to have more. My mother says that Elmer's father was Arthur B and his mother Cora Davault. I believe his grandfather was John and I am told Mary Bagby. If you have this and more I would like to exchange info with you. I have the Adams family back to Nimrod Adams born about 1775. I will be glad to send what I have if you are interested.
JRS
