Hi Siegfried, No I havent been able to find the facts yet. I believe that our Great Grandfather Julius Willem Osmers married Maria Mathilda Birkholtz but have been unable to substantiate this either. My initial thoughts are that they were both single in Kingwilliamstown area as a lot of Germans were brought to this area to populate the town in the late 1800's maybe early 1900's. This family is so hard to track down but I am still trying.

Osmers in South Africa

I think that I have at last been able to find out more info regarding the Osmers family in Tzaneen. I am led to understand that Julius Willem Osmers married Maria Matilda Birkholtz and that they were originally in Kingwilliamstown. I have not been able to find out how they arrived in Kingwilliamstown or how they got to South Africa from Germany although I am led to believe that several German soldiers were sent there to settle. Maria Matilda Birkholtz, I believe, was my greatgrandmother whom we called "Ouma" and she lived with Boet and Hennie in Tzaneen. I do not know when her husband Julius died. It has not been easy to sort all this out but I will keep trying.
Hi Cherine, I am not sure where you fit into the Osmers family so I was wondering whether you could advise what your grandparents' names were. My grandmother was Johanna daughter of Julius Osmers and her brothers were Boet, Fred and I think Otto. Would anyone know how or when the Osmers family arrived in South Africa possibly from Germany. I have checked many lists, including the Stamoers, other settler lists etc to no avail. Please I need some answers. Sincerely, Rose

Your message came as such a wonderful surprise. I have been trying to find some of our beloved family for years. I am the granddaughter of Johanna, Ouma was my greatgrandmother. The last time I was in Tzaneen was in about March 1960 when we stayed with Boet and Hennie. I have been doing family research now for years, have been able to put together my husband's family but not my own - any information has been very elusive. My email address is rosalie.enstrom@bigpond.com and I would love to hear more from you and may receive a copy of the photograph. In turn I will give you whatever I have on record. We now live on Macleay Island, Australia. Please keep in touch. Love Rose

I have found Alex on Skype in Phalaborwa and have actually tried to make contact but he has not responded. Probably does not know who I am.
Hi Rosalie,
My grandfather was Johannes Alexander "Alex". I also remember "Ouma", who live with uncle Boet until she passed away - I was a child when that was and can't remember when. Most of my mother's siblings are still living in the Northern Province. The eldest daughter, Margaret is with her daughter in Kempton Park, but the eldest son, Alex is in Phalaborwa, so is the younger brother Ben & his 3 sons, who are professional game hunters (Alex's 2 sons as well). When my grandmother married "Alex", they lived in Messina, where he was a hunter as well. They had 12 children, two of whom passed away in infancy. My mother was the third of 6 surviving daughters (4 sons survived). Boet and Fred's children are also mostly living in Tzaneen to this day, so is my brother; I will ask him what happened to everyone and let you know. Maybe he is able to tell how they happened to settle in Tzaneen, as he is more up to date on these things.
Caro Braithwaite - braith@telkomsa.net

My email address is rosalie.enstrom@bigpond.com.au. Would you have the date of birth of your grandfather or his brother Julius. This name too rings a bell. The Osmers family have been so hard to track as I have no idea as to when or how they actually ended up in Tzaneen, South Africa.
Regards, Rose

I read with interest your request for information regarding your greatgrandparents. I have been searching for years for information about the Osmers who lived in Tzaneen. My grandmother was Johanna Wilhemina Osmers, she had brothers known as "Boet", Alex, Fred and Otto. I have no idea how they ended up in Tzaneen and only knew my great grandmother as "Ouma". "Ouma" was well into her 90's when I last saw her which would have been in early 1960. Would love to hear from you.
Rose.
