Re: Isaac Ostrander, Norfolk County Ontario

Thank you very much for the reply. I have learned a lot about the Ostranders since making this query, starting with the fact that none of the conventional sources get it right.

Let me start with Isaac C. Ostrander, son of Jacob Ostrander and Eleanor Clark, probable Grandson of Yassac (Issac) Ostrander of Thorold. He left a will, pretty well defining the members of his family.

"I do will order and direct that all and singular that part of lot No. 143 be equally divided by my executors, herein after named, among my children, that is to say, my son James, my daughter Ann, my daughter Susan, and my daughter Harriet, each an equal part, also my son Jacob to have an equal share with the rest. Thirdly, I do give and bequeath to my beloved wife Mary all my chattels and all the land now cleared on said lot during her natural life." (Note; Ann appears to be Christie Ann)

Whenever I see this list of children attributed to any other Isaac, I become suspicious. Mary, his wife, appears to be Mary jane Robbins, but I do not have a marriage record yet. One source says they were married in 1816 when Isaac was 20 years old, making Mary his lifelong and only wife. Isaac C died in 1862 with the will being probated in January 1863.

Secondly, let me address Isaac Ostrander of Malahide Township. This Isaac is the son of Pieter Ostrander and Lydia Davis. He married Sarah Ann Willson in 1816 at the age of 24. This marriage time is authenticated by land grant records to Sarah which mention Isaac. He died without a will in 1860, but Surrogate Court records list Sarah as the administrator of his estate. They are buried together in Rogers Corners Cemetery. Again this Isaac had a lifelong marriage to Sarah. It was Isaac's brother Thaddeus who married Margaret Conroy (Conray, Conway). By my accounting Isaac's children were Lydia, Stearns, Margaret, Charles, Augusta, Amelia, and Euseba.

Finally, Isaac born 1798 (per census records - disagrees with other published dates) son of John Ostrander and Christiana Cohoe. The starting point is the Joseph and Marinda Grimshaw biography (http://www.grimshaworigin.org/Webpages2/JosephOstrander.htm) which clearly names Marinda as daughter of Isaac Ostrander and Deborah Starkey and grandaughter of John and Christiana Ostrande. She states that they were the parents of two sons and four daughters. I think, however, that Isaac was the father of two and four, but that he had multiple wives as follows:

With Deborah Starkey, daughter Marinda b1824 and son Iley b1826. Deborah died in 1831.

With wife Naomi, daughter Sarah b1837, Daughter Christiana b 1838, son John b 1841. These three children are recorded in the 1851 census and a wife is needed to fill the gap between the 1831 death of Deborah and the 1842 marriage to Elizabeth. Naomi is mentioned in only one record as the mother of Christiana in her 1858 marriage to James Chandler. (Note that the first born son was named for the paternal grandfather and the second born daughter was named for the paternal grandmother following Dutch tradition. Could the first born daughter, Sarah, have been named for the maternal grandmother?

With wife Elizabeth Walsh (I have the 1842 marriage record) daughter Deborah.

There is also a marriage record for Isaac Ostrander (born 1810), son of John and Christiana to Catharine Archer, born 1820. I believe that this is the same Isaac. If you were 22 years older than your bride, you might fudge your age a bit. I also believe that Catharine was really Catharine Ackert, widow of John Ackert, whose maiden name was Catharine Fleming. I derive this information from the marriage record for her son by her first marriage, Walter Ackert. Isaac unfortunately died that same year according to the Grimshaw biography.

I can find no other contemporary Isaac's in the census records in the Norfolk/Oxford/ Elgin area, so the story holds together pretty well, but
I admit that there are a few gaps in the trail of evidence, more information and records are needed.
I have not seen all the various pieces of evidence as I live in the US and have not gotten access to the wills etc. However, I believe that Isaac, son of John & Christiana (Cohoe) Ostrander was married three times. His first wife is Deborah Stark and by her had: James, Charles, Susan, Jacob, and Harriet. By 1851, he married 2ndly Mary and had Christiana and Eleanor. On the 22nd of May 1865 in Bayham, Elgin Co, he married Catherine Archer and had no issue by this last wife. I don't have a death date for Isaac, but he may have left a will that identifies the various children by their mother. John Ostrander's brother, Peter Ostrander also had a son Isaac who married Margaret Conway. Peter is, I believe, the Peter Ostrander found in early Thorold township land grants next to his father Isaac Ostrander (died 1809).

I would be very interested in any original documents you are able to locate and copy as I have had to rely on secondary sources, though I think these lineages are right, it is hard to know without the hard evidence.

Hi, I am researching my genealogy and I came across your post. I have very limited knowledge but from what I've gathered from my aunt, I think that Caroline Ostrander is in my lineage, as well.

Charles Wyant and Caroline Ostrander were both born in Rhinebeck. They had a daughter, Caroline Wyant, who married Lawrence S. Steinhilber. He was born in 1887 in White Port, Rosendale. I think his parents, Jacob Steinhilber and Mary Weber, were immigrants from Germany. They also had two daughters, Caroline, born in 1880 and Mary.
The Steinhilbers and Dawes merged when my grandparents, Lawrence Sylvester Steinhilber, born in 1912, and Agnes Ford married on June 21, 1938 in St. Mary’s Church. They lived on Hasbrouck Avenue. Agnes was a housewife and Lawrence worked on the railroads. Agnes and Lawrence had seven children, my aunts and uncles:
Born 1939 - Agnes Irene
Born 1940 - Patricia Ann
Born 1942 – Lorraine
Born 1944 – MaryLou
Born 1947 – Lawrence Sylvester III
Died in infancy in 1948 – John Henry
Born in 1949 – Robert James (my father)

I would love any additional information. Thanks!
Melissa, I'm trying to verify the lineage on someone. Lafayette B. Ostrander was born circa 1825 in New York. On the 1850 Census, he is in Illinois, Cook County, and married to an Emily, born about 1837 in Illinois.

He appears to be related to a Benjamin Ostrander born abt. 1810 in New York, married to a Elizabeth/Delia, and a Josiah Ostrander, born abt. 1820, married to an Eliza/Louisa.

All three guys (my thought is) are sons of Catharine Ostrander, the only Ostrander in Cook County on the 1840 census.

1840 Census, Males:
5-10:1, 10-15:1, 15-20:1, 20-30:1, 30-40:1

1840 Census, Females:
5-10:1, 15-20:1, 40-50:1

If Catharine was born abt 1790-93 the timing work out if Benjamin was her eldest. Supposed to be born in New York.

Any assistance would be great - thanks...
Hi.
I had no info on daughter Caroline Wyant. I have her last in a 1900 census residing with her mother and sister Ella in Kingston NY. I believe she was referred to as Carrie. I also thought I had information that she passed away in 1918 unmarried - but this may be wrong if your info is right. I know there are tons of Wyants in this area of NY and perhaps a few Caroline Wyants. Are you certain she is the daughter of Charles & Caroline Wyant - meaning do you have documents that state this? Just curious. I'll be happy to share what info I have on the Wyant line. I did find out recently that Caroline Ostrander Wyant died in 1903 in Rhinebeck and is buried there. I have not found out what when Charles died but he was last residing in 1910 in Jamesburg, Middlesex, New Jersey with a second wife. I also have not found who Caroline Ostrander's parents are yet. You can email me back at macatkins@gmail.com Look forward to hearing back from you.

Hi Nancy
It was so nice to talk with Jerry. As Nycole said it was sad the Ostranders were not a close family. I am also trying to reach Nycole but so far no answers to the phone numbers I have. As far as I can recall, Bertha and George Furley never married, they lived together. I believe she is also buried in Oakhill Cem in San Jose. You need to go to Hollister to go back anymore on Bertha family. This is where the Parkers come into the picture

Gary, I was unable to send you an E-mail. Does Iver Ostrander & Ethel Bennett sound like it may be part of your family. I'm May's daughter Geri.

Geri, could you list all of your's & Jerry's cousins for me? I would like to have their names and who their parents were. A person should at least know the names of their first cousins.

Love, Nancy

PS: I loved talking to you the other night. Jerry & I are so glad we found you.
