Pat,
I'm not related to Regina but I do have a copy of her 1914 marriage record to Leon Wincenty Kubacki at Five Holy Martyrs. She was the daughter of Jan Ostrowski & Kazimieria Kurpminska and was born in Kowal, Poland. Regina also went to Cook County Probate Minors Court to get permission to marry. These court records contain the info where in Poland she's from. I'll try to attach her marriage record to this post. If it works I'll attach her probate papers in the following posts.
Craig Ostrowski

JohnJDoll64,
It seems as though this is the same Frank & Frances Ostrowski from South Chicago, IL. Although I'm not related, when I first started my genealogy I collected info on different Ostrowski families which lived near my own Ostrowski family. This was one of them. I collected the naturalization papers of Frank Ostrowski, old obituaries from The Daily Calumet and various other things. I'd be happy to send you whatever I have. I believe Frank Ostrowski was born in Polajewo, Poland. There were a number of other Ostrowski families from South Chicago who were also from Polajewo. Have you ever researched these other families?

Re: Detroit, Michigan area Ostrowskis

Thanks for the reply. I know my Ostrowski ancestors were part of the Sweetest Heart of Mary church in Detroit, and their records are in a library there. I've had someone look through the records, but they only say Poland on them :( I was able to get the maiden name of Julia and the parents of Vincent and Julia's father's names in this way. However, still no village.

I've had to go to more fuzzy methods like a surname project because I feel I've exhausted all the direct records relating to my family. If I can find that the Vincent Ostrowski family group was linked with another family group, there is a good chance that they were siblings or cousins. I could then use that other family group to find a village which may be easier, then I can order records from that village to prove if my family group is really there. Or, nowadays, I can try to use DNA testing to see if I'm closely related to another family descendant.

Detroit, Michigan area Ostrowskis and related families project

Hello,

I've posted the result of work on Ostrowski families and related individuals that were in the Detroit, Michigan area. This information is based on the Detroit city directories, US census records, and Michigan vital records on FamilySearchLabs.

A good page to start is in the name index, but everything is linkable:
http://www.dealraider.com/gene/detroitostrowskis/names16.htm...

If you had any Detroit-area Ostrowskis, please take a look and see if you link in or know any more information on these families. Please send me an email here or through the site with any information updates you have. If you have any information that would prove that some of these people are duplicates of each other, I'd be grateful.

I did this work because I'm trying to find the ancestral village of my ancestor Vincent Ostrowski (1860-1939). By surveying all the Ostrowskis in the area, I hoped to link together with some other families who may be easier to trace the ancestral village. After all this effort, I have not been able to accomplish that yet, but the work is hopefully useful to everyone else.

Thank You!

p.s. I'm primarily looking for my ancestral village in Poland (West Prussia) of Vincent Ostrowski (b 1860 - d 1939, married to Julia Radzikowska). After a lot of work, my best hint is still the Hamburg Passenger List that gives a town that looks like Kl. Conja, but I have not found a matching record yet on any towns. If you have any information, please contact me, I also have a big reward for anyone that prove the original village! :)

More information:

Vincent Ostrowski's first wife (who is listed on the passenger list) was Julia Radzikowska. Does that help anyone connect the dots?

Also, I found a couple more Polish towns that could sound like "Klein Conja" in German:

Kluszkowce
Klikuszowa

There are also several people listed as immigrants to America from these towns, but none of them are Ostrowski or Radzikowska.

I'm posting this update in case this will give anyone else more ideas that may help me?

Re: Detroit, Michigan area Ostrowskis

Hi,

Have you tried obtaining photocopies or transcriptions for all of the children (if any) of Vincent and Julia who were born in the USA? Usually, the birthplace of each parent is recorded in the baptismal records. You don't want the certificates issued to verify baptism since they don't include *all* of the info found in the church book. Also, if they were married in the USA, obtain a copy of their marriage record from the church. This should also contain their places of birth. If you don't know what church they were married in, the civil return filed with the marriage application will have the name of the person who married them, and you can track down where that priest/pastor served at the time they were married.

Ostrowski (also a surname I'm researching, but not in the Detroit area) is a rather common surname - it means "one from Ostrów, Ostrowo, Ostrowce, Ostrowite, etc." and there were/are a lot of towns by that name scattered all over Poland (both historical territory and present day). There could be several Ostrowski families who immigrated to the same place in the USA who were totally unrelated. Doing research based on surname alone can often be futile. :-)

-MJ
Re: birth place and passenger list

Hi,

The Wincent. Ostrowski who sailed from Hamburg and arrived at the port of New York in May 1890 wasn't traveling with a Julia. He was traveling with a Julian (male). Perhaps, a cousin or brother and *his* child? The Hamburg passenger manifest clearly marks Julian as a male. The NY arrival manifest shows Julian as a female (F) but the given name is definitely Julian.

Since they changed ships in Liverpool, you might want to see if England has ships' arrival records available to search to see which sex this Julian has on the emigration passenger list from Liverpool.

As for finding Vincent's birthplace, have you tried obtaining baptismal records for his children born in the USA? Not a certificate, but a transcript or photocopy of the actual entry in the church books. Often the entries in the books will give info about the parents like this: "Wicenty Ostrowski, son of [father's name] and [mother's first and maiden name], born in [place]..."

Some priest/ministers were very specific when they recorded where the parents of the child were born and others were satisfied to write down only the country or region where they were born, so be sure to obtain the info for ALL children born in the USA.

And the same goes for the marriage record. If they were married in a church, be sure to obtain that transcript or copy as well (if you don't have that). Civil records are often less specific than church records.

-MJ

I found the birth record of Frank (Franciszek) Ostrowski (husband of Frances nee Piotrowski) in the parish of Polajewo, Poland. He was born Aug. 27, 1876 in the village of Polajewek. I tried to post this birth record twice, but both times there was an error. Some of Frank's siblings and other relatives also came to live in Chicago. Franciszek was the son of Mikolaj Ostrowski & Jozefa Wesolowska. Jozefa was the second wife of Mikolaj. Mikolaj was smart in that both wives were named Jozefa.
Craig

My grandfather was from Germany. He came to Coalport Pa with his family in 1906. We found the records in Ellis Island that they arrived on the Carpathia - the same ship that saved people on the Titanic 6 years later.

Augusta's maiden name was Lange and Otto was her son. They used Lange to come to America because the stepfather was in trouble with the law.

Otto married my grandmother Francis Rain and lived in Irwin, PA.

She married my grandfather von Ostrowski and came to the US around 1914, to Massachusetts. Where as "your" Augusta's family from?

I was told he had a couple of brothers - possibly in Belleville. John and Rose had 4 sons (Gus, John, Joseph, and Bernard) - there may have been 2 babies that died.

I think I have info on Anton Ostrowski - I think you are researching him. I have a historical book on St. Albertus - it mentions several Ostrowski's.
I don't know if it helps - I was visiting Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Detroit - asking about my relatives - I was told there are 200 Ostrowski's buried there. You can write them to get a list.
