I found Audy (age 29) and his wife Ruby on the 1930 census in Benton Co. MS., surrounded by other Oswalt's, one of whom is Clarence age 23 with his wife and children and next door is Jim & Callie Oswalt. Jim is 49. In Jim and Callie's home are children: Cecil, Quitman and Ida (md. to William Farris). Next door is Jesse Oswalt age 25 with a wife Effie.
I assume Audy is related to these other Oswalts, likely a brother and that Jim, the elder 49 yr. old is the father of these Oswalts. Appreciate any information on them or their line back.
Thank you,
Christi
christip2@suddenlink.net

Didn't think I was going to get logged in!! Been a long time since I was posting.
I have a copy of a census and it is not a very good copy I might add!! It is a 1850 census for what looks like Nacogdoches in Tex.
WR Oswalt age 27 place of birth Alabama
Mary age 22 (can't read birth place)
Mali (can't read) age 5 F
Amanda age 3 F birth place Texas
Eli age 1 M
David age 13 M birth place Alabama
Jefferson age 10 M
Thomas Jefferson being the one I am connected to.
I know nothing about WR Oswalt. That was about as far back as we went. It appears that this WR is a child of William b. abt 1800. And looking at the ages of Jefferson and David they are his brothers and living with WR.
Sorry I don't have anything more on them.
Goodluck
Flo
Since I last corresponded with you I have discovered more on this family. The 1900 Madison County census has Annie N. Oswalt living in the home of Henry Martin. The census has her as his sister. She has 2 children with her Jessie 12 yrs old, and Myrtle J.10 yrs old. Another person living in the home is said to be the mother of Henry Martin but it appears her name is Susie M. Morgan born 1847.
Jessie Myrtle and Susie are shown to be born in Alabama but this is not necessarily true. Census takers were continuously
making mistakes as to where folks were born.
The 1910 census has Jessie married to Elna or Elmer O. and they have a child Jessie B. 1 yr old.
The 1930 census has Jessie J. and Elna (Elmer) with children Homer 19, Floyd 17, James 15, Lois 9, and Charles 5.
I have discovered that Homer wife is Dorothy, and Floyd's wife is Helen.
I also discovered that the Wife of Jessie is believed to be Elna Roberson.
The 1937 city directory says that Annie is the widow of Jack and living with Jessie.
Please let me know what information you can add to this.

Do you know the name of Jesse James father? It is entirely possible that your forefather did come direct from Germany to Mississippi. I have ran into this situation before where children were told that their grandparents came from Germany but the emigrant came several generations earlier. Your grandparents or at least your great-grandparents couldn't read or write and probably still spoke German. It would seem that they came directly from Germany in that case.
I will continue to search in your lineage and hope I come up with something to prove whether they should be on my list of descendants or whether they did in fact come directly from Germany to Mississippi.
Please let me know if you mother has something to add that might help. Do you know of an old family Bible? They have clues sometimes as to who past generations were. In any case I will keep in touch. I do know of another family of Oswalts in the Memphis area that had an ancestor named Jesse James. If you're interested let me know.

I married a Oswalt here in South Carolina. When I started compiling information, I had no idea how many of her family had went west. Most of the male brothers of her grandfather and west west. There are probably more Oswalt's in Mississippi than is here on South Carolina. I am intrigued by the fact that Jesse James was your grandfather. I have been tracking a Jesse James Oswalt whose father came from SC to Alabama then to Mississippi and settled in Lee County. Have you any information on your grandfather's family, brothers, sisters, etc.? You mentioned he came from Germany, is this what you were told or have you some other reason to think this. All of the Oswalts that came from South Carolina came from Germany.
You said you didn't recall any mention of Annie, she is listed living at the same address making me think she is a relative.

I'm not sure if they came from the families I am researching so I need to know where they came from. The families I am interested in came from Germany through South Carolina. Please reply so I'll quit looking for information on them if they cam from elsewhere.

I do not know what part of Germany that they did come from. But I wish I did. My father is gone now (Jesse James son) and I can't ask him. But if there is any other question you want to ask me let me know and I will try to help.
Sorry that it has been awhile since I have written. We had a death in the family and my grandson had his tonsils taken out and I had to take care of him while my daughter worked.
OK. On the people that you have found are all kin to me. They are my aunts and uncles. Except for Charles, he is my
Dad. Floyd and Helen lived in or around Atlanta, Ga.With their children. Floyd is dead now, but I do not know about
Helen. Homer died many years ago, but I do not know about his wife. James lived here with his wife (Edna) and their
children. Both of them are dead now to. Lois lived in St. Louis with her husband (Chuck).
They didn't have any children. Lois died in a car wreck many years ago when I was little. They also had another
sister that was crippled, but I can't think of her name
right now. But when I do I will let you know.I think she died at an early age(We still have the baby bed that she
stayed in.)I don't know if this will help, but Dad always
talked about him (as a boy growing up) living in Tracy City
Tennessee. Dad and Mom (Irene) always lived here with us
kids. I am going to try and find out who has my Mom's bible.
She says that some of this information is in it. Also, I
just wanted to say thanks for sharing this information with
me.

Hi,

I am also researching Oswalts in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. Do you have an approxiate date of birth for this Polly Oswalt?

I have a Benjamin Oswalt who resided in Huntingdon Co, and was born between 1794 and 1800. Is it possible that they are brother and sister?

You can contact me at: jess_history@yahoo.com

Thanks,

Jessica
