Otts DNA Project

There is now an OTTS surname DNA project at Family Tree DNA. For further information go to their web site. http://www.familytreedna.com/surname.asp

I hope that this project will confirm my paper work and provide me clues as to where to search for further information on ancestors.

My line of interest is William John OTTS who was in Fayette, Lamar, and Marion Cos., Alabama. The surname was sometimes spelled OATS and OTS. I'm always delighted to exchange information with other researchers.

Jacque

Hi Daniel,
My name was Karen Otts before I married. My dad is Posey's son Manual Bill Otts. I have met your mother several times. She is wonderfu. I met Mary Ann at a reunion a few years ago. I found the family tree that you made. I haven't had much luck finding anything new. I just started getting into genealogy. I would like to find out what country they came from. There is a research library by my office I started going to that has a lot of info from all the states. People go there to research genealogy. I would be interested in any info you could share with me. Maybe I can Find some more info at the library. I will share anything I find with you.
Your cousin,
Karen

Daniel,

My husband is Billy (Billie) Joe Otts whose father was Persie Paul Otts and mother is Earline (Cribbs) Otts. Persie's father was Daniel Taney Otts. He was Posie's younger brother. I'll be glad to send you any information I have about this side of the family and would like some information about Posie and Avie. All I have on them is their names and Posie's birth and death dates.

Do you know anything about "Babe"'s parents or brothers and sisters? I know he was born in North Carolina but haven't been able to trace him any further back.

Also I am told there is someone in Texas who has traced this part of the Otts family but have not been able to find out who it is. Do you have any information about that?

As for the reunion, we are going to the west coast for two graduations and to visit some of my family in May so won't be able to go this year.

If I can be of any help with your research you can reach me directly at lao_ga2@bellsouth.net.

Lee

I can tell you about the William Otts who married in Greene Co., AL. He was William Perry Otts b. 1814 Spartanburg Co., SC, son of William Otts and Delila Brewton. He married Catherine Wilder in Greene Co., AL. About 1852 they moved to Vienna, LA, then in the late 1860s to Homer, LA, where they died and are buried. They had four daughters and no sons. They are listed in the 1850 census of Greene Co., AL, 1860 Jackson Parish, LA, and 1870-1900 in Claiborne Parish, LA.

I am sorry that I am not familiar with your William J. I have done a cut-and-paste job and sent you 5 e-mail, 4 of which are text, the 5th is a photo of the tombstone of Elizabeth Aaron Otts sent to me by Rebecca Tulley. I use Family Tree Maker. If the notes I sent to you are not readable, please let me know and we'll try another format generated by FTM. Any information you can furnish to us on the Otts-Aaron connection would be appreciated. Good luck in your search.
Jacque

Have you heard of Julius Otts who married Rose (Or Rosa) Lee? She died in the early 1920's and is buried in Ft. Myers Florida. I have been unable to determine Rose's parents or siblings. She was my great-grandmother. Julius Otts is the son of Samuel P. Otts and Sarah McKissack Whitfield Otts.
Samuel Perry Otts is the son of James and Joicy Otts. Samuel's brother is A. M. Otts who later moved to Texas.

The information included here is based on the my research and that of Jack Olson, Mackey Otts, and Connie Schofield. William J. Otts was first married to Mary Laney. They had 2 children--Mary Jane and William Jr. The name of William J. Otts' 2nd wife is unknown. Their children were Newton, Melissa, Jasper, Michael and Jane. William J. Otts 3rd wife was Jane Shehorn. Their children were Francis or Franz, Sarah, Rebecca, Lewis, Monica, Rosannah, James, and Richard. Actual marriage certificates have not been found. Information is based on census, the settlement of the estate of David Laney, and death certificate of Monica Otts. The father of William J. Otts is believed to be Michael P. Otts of Mecklenburg Co., NC.
Jacque

Dear Jacque:
I thank you for sending me the emails and have perused them carefully. They are all readable. I will try and scan this page of the journal and send it as an attachment. I hope that it works. Give me a day or so. I have sick children.
Yes, I will explore this connection to the Otts.
What is really sad is that our Arant family bible was in our possession. It was in pieces, but it contained all of our information. In 1955, two distant cousins borrowed the bible from my Great-grandfather and it never was returned. It began suddenly LOST. I am distraught because it contained our crucial links to our Arant family and their marriage into the families: Funderburks, Plylers, Bakers, McManus, etc.
I am in the process of hunting down anyone in those lines who made a copy of the bible. In those days, it was not unusual for people to copy one another's bibles. My great-grandmother copied the Neal bible dating to 1775.
If in my quest, I find the bible. I know that it will mention any marriages in to the Otts. I feel that your Elizabeth Aaron was really a ARANT.
We must keep in touch with each other.
Julie

Thank you so much for responding to my inquiry. I received your email but it was in scrambled up. I hope to compare your information to what I have here in NC/SC. I would loved to know more about this. The Arant surname was recorded by census recorders as "Arron, Arant, Aaron, Airon, Avant, Arand, Arrant, Arndt". Yes, I believe that we have found one of our Arant daughters. Very interesting.
Please try to send your information again. If you don't mind, or we could do snail mail (US Postal). Thanks a bunch. Julie

P.S. I assume that Otts had variations as well. Oats?? However, correct spelling was Otts

When I found my ancestor's journal, I began perusing its contents. I contacted Fayette County Genealogical Society concerning the Phillip Otts in my journal. In 1848 or 1850, John Arant or E. Arant sent $625 to "Mr. Phillip I Otts of Fayette County Alabama". My ancestor was German as the Otts were. My ancestors came to USA in 1733 from Hesse Germany. My ancestor of the journal was a well traveled merchant. He traveled to New York to buy goods for his store.
I would love to know more about your Phillip Otts, son of Micheal Otts. I find it extremely interesting that Michael was born in NC and his children were all born in SC except for one. My ancestor lived on the NC/SC stateline. He is listed sometimes in both counties on the census records.
Please share any information with me. I would be grateful for any connection to an Arant family. Other than this entry, I have no information on the Otts in this journal. However, I do know that my Arant had relatives in Charleston, SC and Orangeburg, SC. He lived in Chesterfield County, South Carolina and at times is listed in Union County, NC.
I eagerly await your reply. If you are looking for your Otts, look for an Arant nearby. My ancestor ONLY put important information in this journal. He lists births of relatives and this notation. This notation was the largest sum of money ever recorded in his journal. He was obviously very important...this Phillip Otts.

I've been told that William J. Otts married 3 times. That the middle wife was a unknown. That my Malissa E. [Otts] Fowlers mother was probably not Jane Shehorn. I've also been told that William may have married Jane twice. That William P. Otts was not the father of William J. Otts. Then he was his father. Which is right?
There is a William Otts that married in the early Greene Co., AL marriages. Who is he?
Can anyone straighten out my confusion?
