Florence ~

Simply out of idle curiouslty I searched the Fulford board.
**********************
Mary Fulford - NC Posted on: 20 Dec 1999, by Denise Baan
Surnames > Fulford
...I was just looking over your note. I found out two days ago that my g-g-grandmother's name was Mary Fulford from NC. I've been researching the Campen line in Beaufort and Pamlico Counties, NC and my father s...
***************************
Now this is very interesting. There is a village - actually just a store - named Otway in Beaufort, NC.

During the War of 1812 a Privateer named Otway Burns sailed from that area. His grandmother, Mary, was an Otway.

I do not believe in co-incidences. The names Otway and Fulford are too unusual for this to simply happen.

Perhaps you might wish to look at the Fulfords from North Carolina.

Why not contact me directly at Otway@nyc.rr.com

A quick reply.
The Otways who came to the colonies were Thomas Ottway to Jamestowne, Virginia. George in Salem, Massachusetts. Either the same or another George in North Carolina. And a William Otway alias Parker who witnessed the first land purchase in the conolies - Duxbury, Massachusetts.

The John mentioned the Will of Rev. George Otway joined up with Cromwell and was rewarded with a castle and land in Tipperary.

As John was a Parliamentarian and as his father was a priest of the Church of England there well would have been a split in the family. But that is an assumption, not a known fact.

Re: Otway in colonial America

I stumbled across a Reverend George Otway, who attended Christ's College, Cambridge, BA 1599; MA 1603. His bio is at http://www.otway.com/family/344.html if you're interested. My research was for my ancestor, John Ffulford, and a John Ffulford was a servant in the Otway household. On the 2d page of this paper, it mentions that son, John, "...had left the family long before they moved to Rockbourne. Perhaps there had been a family row." It is about this time that colonists were trying to get out of England to Jamestowne and the other colonies. It may be possible that John Otway and John Fulford MAY well have left England together and come to Jamestowne. My question now, is this: have you any data on your Otway that could possibly shed some light on these two men - possibly yours and mine? Florence Fulford Moore

Maybe, just maybe we will find W.B.O. Ohio isn't all that far from upstate NY. A Otway/Ottaway from Kent, Smarden/Headcorn area moved there in one of the mass emmigrations. Some moved on to Michigan. One thought - Why not contact Elnora Mayfield emayfield@power-net.net She has much information on that line. Photos also -

I'm in contact with Lynne's children. The physical resemblance to me is very strong.

Thanks Gini. I did find an IGI record of a marriage between "William B. Ottoway or Otway" to Ketura Bickerdyke on 12th September 1846, Hamilton, Ohio. So the info you have posted adds a bit more weight to this being my WBO. I will follow up by getting a look at the source if I can. Regards - Barb.

All Otway Lines and DNA

Has anyone started an Otway DNA Study? If not, why not? It seems to me it would solve some of the conflict over whether they all connect back to the same source prior to the ones who went to Ireland. In my own case, if I could find a male descendant from my 3 great grandfather, who added a different surname when he came to Canada in 1795, who would cooperate I could find out if he was really an Otway or not. It would also be helpful if there was a male descendant of the Otway family that was in Petworth Sussex at one point as that is one of the possible connections.I have not seen any connections to them in any of the postings.

Otway in colonial America

There was an Ottway at Jamestowne and four [4] Otways in colonial Massachusetts.

At this point I have not pin pointed where they are from in England. But rather unusual for one family to be in both colonies at the very start and at least in Massachusetts in a prominent position.

Please be very careful about responsing to offers that say they shall supply information at a price. The vast majority of Otway informtion is readily accessible and should be freely shared and passed along. Those who are willing to send informaton but only at a price should be aware there are rules about using Message Board for profit.

Brian Otway is one of the Norfolk family who came up from Surrey back in 1550.
This was very god news.

It turned out that Brian is of Norfolk line and I'm sending off to him a overview of that line's history - 1467 to 1550 in Surrey and then to now in Norfolk.

[Earliest mention in Norfolk 1202 which I think is record for family]

Another cousin showed up late last evening - an Otty of Bodham.

All best,
Gini

Many slightly differing versions of the story can be called up, but the core of the story is the same.

I suggest it's not one to read on a dark and stormy night!

Gini

William Beauclare Otway is not familiar to me. My ancestor William Ottaway was born in the late 1700s. He married Elizabeth Morgan (no other information on her at present) They had a son named Elijah (b.abt.1800-d.abt.1845) that married Gatsey Edens (b.1803-d.1862). They had a son named William Elijah (b.1831- that may have died in the Civil war abt 1862) that married Mary Stokeley (b.1824-d.1907) in Wilmington,N.C. I think Andrew would be interested in this William. He may email me direct. Pauline

Andrew & Polly ~ Good Morning!

I did a little reading on the settlements in North Carolina and learned at one point many German and Scotch-Irish came down from Pennsylvania. I knew that there was a James Ottaway in Pennsylvania in the early 1800s - yes of the Smarden Master Carpenter line.

I came across a James W. Ottaway in the Culpepper.net web site - they live in NC. James W. definately is of the Smarden line and came first to Pennsylvania and then NC.

So, we are headed in the right direction.

Please contact me directly at Otway@Nyc.rr.com as it is a tad too complicaed for me to copy my records over onto this Reply form. If I am correct them I know a wonderful woman out in Michigan who is a cousin.

I will. Also if you find any relation to the Otways, let me know too.

I have found people on this msgboard to be great. If you post a question about your family, someone will look it up in the cencus' and get back to you.

I hate that these sites charge to let you view goverment documents.

Thanks for getting back to me.

Otway

In tracing my Dad's side of the family (Otway) I've discovered that going back to at least 1788 the men had the name Carrol as their middle name i.e Charles Carrol Otway, Charles John Carrol Otway, Charles William Carrol Otway, William Carrol Otway. Has anyone out there found the same?
Also, any chance someone can explain this to me....in the 1891 census my great grandfather was single and living with his widowed mother. Ten years later he was married (no mention of a wife though) with three children aged 17-19. To add to the conundrum, when he died intestate it says he was a bachelor and his brother was his next of kin. ?????!!!!
