Emma,
I'd be happy to send you any information I have. Please email me at my last name at yahoo.com . It's been a while since I looked at the data that I have, but it'll do me good to pull it out and look at it, especially if there's any connection. There are some gaps in the Ovenden lineage around the time of the families listed above, so it's about time I looked again to see what's available.
Cheers, Andrew

I have reason to believe that the John (B.1846) is my great great grandfather. If my research is correct he married a Frances Rigden Taylor in 1871 and had 2 children, Frances Drusilla (b 1877) and John James (b 1881). Frances is my great grandmother.

Debbie Downey
(nee Simmons)

He is in what appears to be an Australian Military uniform but I think it might be some embassy uniform perhaps as the badge on his collar is none that I know of. The photograph was taken in Winnipeg Man, I assume canada. Let me know if you want a copy....Regards...Tom Patterson

Hi Adrienne
I found a son born to Charlotte Emily and John Hamerton in
1834 Holborn, he was buried in Holborn, St Andrew in 1835.
They also had a daughter Isabel born 1832 and you can see
her on the 1841 census Hackney living with her mother and
grandmother Susannah who died in 1844. Isabel was then 9
years of age. I could not find any other records of
children, so it seems that John died between 1835 and 1841.
They could have divorced following the death of their son,
John would have been quite young and possibly re-married.
Cheers Jean
Hi!
I have your Doris on my Ovenden database but as Annie Doris. These Ovendens had a habit of swapping their names around!
The record I have shows that she was born in Edmonton in 1895 and I do not have a marriage record, but I do have an entry for Gladys born in Edmonton in 1898 and a marriage for
her in 1922 at Rochford in Essex to ? Rose (surname only)
This may help but do not take it as gospel as I've only
followed my own line. The marriage entry details are july/
september 1922 volume 4a page 1766 if you want to order a certificate or look it up yourself.Peggy and Jack are probably nicknames, their correct names are probably in my
records.

I have Riley as a bricklayer in Margate on the 1881 census. If you have Ancestry it is District 10 Margate image 37 of 56.On the 1891 census his wife Elizabeth is listed as a widow living with her daughter Matilda who is 15 years old, and is shown as a lodginghouse keeper. I think ,because of Elizabeth being a widow, I looked in 'Deaths'and found he had died in Eastry in the June Qtr.1882.If you cant trace his death I could look up the reference number and code and you could get a copy of the original certificate. Happy hunting June.

Riley Ovenden was my GG grandfather, so I was interested to see your posting. But I'm not sure his death date is 1882.
His daughter, Sophia Jane Ovenden (my G grandmother) married Alfred Bishop on 27 April 1884 and Riley is listed on the marriage cert (which I have) along with his profession, as a "builder".
I don't know whether a marriage cert would note whether the father is deceased. Do you have a source for the 1882 death date?
Cheers,
Francis

I may have replied to your query before. This is my family.
Albert is the 'natural' son of Mary Ovenden. She was born in Eastry the daughter of Aaron and Elizabeth nee Cook.in 1789. I think Aaron was born in Northbourne, Kent the Son of John Ovenden and Margaret nee Ratlif. Both lived in Woodnesborough from 1747 for john and 1882 for Aaron and their wives. I recently wemt to the Canterbury archives and saw the tithe assessment for 1847 and at that time Albert owned the Royal Beer shop and garden and orchard as well as other orchards and arable land.Elias (Albert's son) was my great grandfather.
The Ovenden's you refer to are my family. Roverdenno was one of the children of William and Frances nee Burch who
sailed to America on the SS President Filimore on 6th Dedcember 1854. William was the son of Aaron Ovenden and Elizabeth nee Cook He was born in Woodnesborough Kent, They married im Margate in1827.In addition to the children who sailed to America they also had George born 2/11/1827
John born 3/5/1829, Riley born 30/1/1831 (who died june 1882) and Sampson born 4/22/1832. If you can go onto Ancestry Census 1881 Margate District 10 Image 37 of 56 you will find Riley's family listed. Aaron's parents were John and Margaret nee Ratlif, who married on 5th April 1746 in Woodnesborough Kent. I hope this is useful information.
William's sister Mary was my GGG grandmother.
I seem to be replying to your query long after you posted it, but I hope this helps with your research. I am related to the same family. My great grand father was
Elias Ovenden, and my grand father was Elias John born 1875
in Woodnesborough, and my mother was Kate Lilian born Margate in 1907. We dont know who Albert's father was as he is shown in the christening records as the 'natural' son of Mary born 1789. She was the Daughter of Aaron born 1764 and Elizabeth nee Cook, born 1766. The parents of Aaron
were John Ovenden and Margaret nee Ratlif. We think John was born in 1721, Margaret was born in Woodnesborough on 5th April 1746. John had a settlement order in 1747 to move to Woodnesborough from Great Mongeham. I have recently seen this record in the Archives at Canterbury.
You have missed some of Albert's children from your list. They are Mary Elizabeth July 1842, Sarah Jan 1844 Walter 1849 (He was deaf)and Edward Oct 1851.I dont live in Kent but my sister does! When I go to visit her in Margate I always do a bit more research into the family history
best of luck, june

I'm afraid I don't have William Stephen Ovenden in my data, but I do have an Ovenden line in my tree originating from Kent England.
I'm intrigued by the Australian connection because my late mother (the daughter of a Kentish Ovenden)writes in her memoirs, of some unnamed Ovendens involved with finance, who emigrated to Australia and after some considerable difficulties eventually prospered. She notes that they sent back monetary assistance to their daughter in law, who at that time was living in straightened circumstances.
I also have a few old studio portraits originating from Brisbane, unfortunately the subjects are not identified.
Might there be a connection?
Chris A
Hi Andrew

Ovenden is my family name and I had also heard this rumour so I got a CD from the Huguenot Society in London. The CD which covers the Registers of the Walloon and Huguenot Churches of Canterbury, Bristol, Plymouth, Stonehouse and Thorpe-le-Soken (available online).

There is mention of Docteur Oveden [sic] in the Canterbury register but only because of leasing a property in Canterbury in 1606. A footnote says that Dr Robert Hovenden [sic] had inherited the property in 1584.

Another Robert Hovenden FSA is listed on the Huguenot Council in 1891 and he edited the Canterbury Register also dated 1891. In 1894 he is listed as a Vice President of the Society. This Robert may possibly be related to the earlier one.

There are no further references. My conclusion is that it is highly unlikely that Ovendens are Huguenots.

Regards
Hi,
I recently started compiling my family history. I am looking for anyone with connections to Henry Ovenden (b. 1820?, Kent) and Emma Millard Ovenden(b. 1823, Wales). They had 6 children: Ann (b.1839), Eliza (b.1841), Thomas (b.1843), Mark (b.1845), Edwin (b.1848), and William (b.1850). All dates are approximate, but all of the children were probably born in Penshurst.

I am also looking for anyone with connections to Bertha Maud(e) Hall. I believe she is connected to Mark (b.1845).

Thank you for any help you may be able to provide.
Regards,
Kelly
