Hi, My g-great grandfather was Milton Smallwood. He is listed in the 1860 Sullivan Co, TN census with wife,Margaret, children Thomas, William and Mary(age 2)I can find no other census records for them, until 1880, when I find Mary Smallwood living with JoabOverbey(54), Sarah(51),Albert(18),John(16) and Mary Smallwood(21) listed as neice. My greatgrand father, Geeorge W. Smallwood was born after the 1860 census. I have found him living with people in the 1870 and 1880 census, but know none of them. He told the family that his parents died when he was very young, but no one remembers him saying where he lived or with whom. He had one surviving sibling listed in his obit. Her name was Mary Scalf from Kingsport. I know that Milton Smallwood married a Margaret Overbey. I find no listing of her among Thomas and Mary Overbey's children. I am hoping to find more info on this relationship. I am willing to share what info that I have also. I can be contacted at jeannebullock@comcast.net.
Jeanne

Levina/Louvena Overby/Overbey of Johnson County Arkansas

Looking for info. on Levina/Louvena Overby/Overby who resided in Johnson County Arkansas. She was the daughter of John & Elizabeth Scott Overby/Overbey.

Supposedly she was married 1st to James Rogers and then married Lewis Wilkins. I cannot find any marriage info. with Levina to James Rogers, but know that they had 1 daughter, Mary F. or Mary Frances Rogers, born in 1845. Mary F. Rogers married Edward Reynolds in 1865.

Also, in the 1850 Johnson Co. AR census, Levena is listed as living with her father John Overby and is listed as Levina Overby and not Levina Rogers, but her daughter is listed as Mary Frances Rogers.

Thanks, Laurie
lauredogg@aol.com

If you are still looking for this info, I have what you need. But my info stops too right after.Though I think they are buried in one of 2 cemetaries here. Hard to find because in some cesus the name is McNeel, which I have found 5 different spellings for the same family. Anyway look for Henry Thomas McNew(McNeel)bn 1837 died 1885. I have some on the overbey too if you need it. Look for Overby.

Could you do a look up for a James E. Owen Haynes, who die in 1943? I am unsure of where in TN, my father did not remember, as he was born after James death. I believe it to be around the Memphis area, most likely between Feb. and Nov 1943. He was from Marked Tree, AR or that area. James was my grandfather.

Christine; I have researched the Overbey Family History that I have and the William Anderson Overbey in it, he is the brother of my Great-Grandfather James Martin Overbey, had no children named Benjamin Franklin Overbey.

Do you know where your Great-Grandfather came from. The Overbey's in my line orginated in Tennessee in the mid 1800's. A. Overbey had one son William Overbey, William had four sons and a daughter. The sons were John H., William Anderson, Thomas Franklin, James Martin and his daughter was Luvicy Jane. These are all the thrid generation in the family line that I'm in, I'am in the sixth generation.
William moved his family to Illinois in the mid 1850's. he died during the trip and is buried in Alton, IL. The history is vague about when Willaim Anderson died, it does state thet he lived in Greene County IL.
If you have any additional information I will be glad to check it with what I have and see if there is a connection anywhere else.

I don’t know if we’ve ever spoken before or not, but I was poking through the message boards and find multiple postings regarding my own family. Specifically, Christopher Hinton and Elizabeth Overby and the two children, James and Elizabeth. The two children lived with William Overby in Randolph County, MO. I also believe that the Overby’s and Hinton’s were either related to, or were close friends with Rice’s, Dameron’s, Cross’, and Dunevant’s. Do you have any additional information on the Overby’s related to my Hinton’s, or any other info on the Hinton’s? I have the James Hinton’s death certificate and it shows his birth place as Caswell, County in 1832, but his fathers name as Richard Hinton (I think that was a mistake). Also, I have pages from a book that state that his sister, Elizabeth Hinton, married a man name Wright Cross and it says her father was Christopher Hinton. I also have a lot of info on James Hinton’s family, James was my Great Great Great Grandfather. I have a copy of James’ marriage certificate to Milly Tuggle in Macon County, MO in 1850. I hope you get this, it seems like we definitely have some family in common.
I am granddaughter to Hazel and Joseph D Overbay. I thought he was named for his mother's father, Joseph Lane and for the man who raised his father, Lorenzo Dow Crisle thus making hls name Joseph Dow Overbay.
Hazel and Joe divorced. Joe then married Charlotte "Lottie" Culbertson and they had a son. Odes before they divorced. Lottie and Odes moved to Nicklesville, Scott Co., VA
Joe's line as told to me by Mark, ggrandson of John Wesley Overbay.... John Wesley married Margaret Ellen "Maggie" Lane. John Wesley was the son of John Albert Overbay and
cordelia Smallwood. I know the census looks like a C. but his middle name is Albert. He is the son of Thomas Overby and Ellen Jane(?) Hicks.
Would love to talk with you!!!!!!!

Overbey/Overby/Overbay/etc

"With over twenty years of personal Overbey family research, I know our progenitor Nicholas Overbury came to America in the 1650s. Strong circumstantial evidence indicates he was the son of Sir Giles Overbury, and was christened in the church at Islesworth, Middlesex County, England, November 4, 1628. Sir Giles was the great grandson of Thomas Overbury of Aston-Sub-Edge located in western England in the area referred to as the Cotswolds. We can safely say we are English and our surname Overbury is Saxon in origin.

Who was Thomas Overbury of the late 15th century? We know as surnames originated, there were those who were called Overbury living in the Cotswolds going back to the 13th century. In the history of the Cotswolds, in addition to the Saxons, there was a Roman settlement dating back to the time of Christ.

Medical tests show both my sister and I have a blood disorder called Beta Thalassemia Minor. It was inherited from one of our parents. Not all my siblings have Beta Thalassemia Minor. This disorder is generally seen in people from the Mediterranean area. If a case study of Overbury/Overbey/Overby/Overbay descendents showed a good number having this disorder, we might conclude we are not only English with a Saxon surname, but also have some Roman blood. REMEMBER THIS IS NOT PROVEN, BUT IT IS INTERESTING."

I would like to hear from any Overbey/Overby/Overbay etc descendents who might have this blood disorder.

I'm doing some research about my family. I find very little to connect my Overbay/Overbey family to the rest of them.
My father was Odes M. Overbay,1929-1984, his father was
Joseph Don Overbay,1902-1970, his father was Jonnie Wesley Overbey, 1877-1927, his father is supposed to
John Albert Overbay 1842-? the first four I listed was from the
Kingsport, Sullivan co.,Tn. area and John Albert overbay's birth is listed online as 1842 in N. Carolina.
Please e-mail me if you may be of help.

I am a decendent of this family line. Thomas Overbey b.1796;
his son John C. Overbey b.1842 was my great-great grandfather. John Wesley Overbey b.1877 was my great grandfather, Joseph Don Overbay b. 1902 was my grandfather and his son Odes Mckinley Overbay b.1929 was my father. I would like to trace my family farther back than Thomas Overbey but it seems to be a dead end, So Deb, do you have any info beyond 1796?

Bobby J.Overbay

This William Overbey is my gggrandfather. I, too, have the Overbey booklet put out by Jack (Mrs. Paul) Overbey. Paul was my dad's first cousin. My dad, (Carl) Raymond Overbey, Jr., grew up on a farm in southern Kansas on the Oklahoma line with his dad, Carl Raymond Overbey, SR., who lived on the farm with his dad and mom, James Martin and Laura Drum Overbey. They moved to KS in 1902 from central Illinois. I am very interested in knowing if you have found anything going back to William's father and beyond. I have just been messing around on ancestry. com for a short while. I have a lot of information, but I'm finding that looking further on the maternal sides brings up lots of very interesting data. People I though had probably entered NC from the Atlantic from Europe, now I see sometimes actually came from New York! James Martin Overbey married Laura Ann Drum, sister of Gilly Drum, who married Jim's older brother, William Anderson Overbey. I also e-mailed John Overbey. with slightly different content

William Overbey, b. Oct. 3, 1820, in Goodsprings, Tenn. and married to Mariah B. Surles, is my gggrandfather, too. I have the Overbey book done by Mrs. Paul Overbey (Jack/Jackie), who was the wife of my dad's first cousin. The story I have is of a family which left Goodsprings, TN in 1855 bound for central IL. The man, William Overbey, died enroute and was buried in Alton, IL. The wife, Mariah Surles Overbey continued on to DeWitt Co.,IL, with her five children. James Martin Overbey was one of those children and he moved to Sumner Co. KS in about 1902 (Farm on the OK state line). My grandfather, Carl Raymond Overbey, Sr., and his family lived on that farm also. My dad, (Carl) Raymond Overbey, JR., is 85 years old and living in Blackwell, OK. I am Cecilia Overbey Carpinelli and live in Atchison, KS, a half an hour north of MCI, the KC airport. I know that there are many connections in central Illinois.

Marie OVERBEY and Mothers fatal accident article 09-1930...

...while doing some research thru the archives of the Oklahoman Newspaper out of Oklahoma City, I happened upon this amazing historical article. The child, Marie OVERBEY was only 9 years old at the time of the accident in Little Rock, AR. It does not mention her Mothers name but the Mother passed away due to electrocution. I hope this article can be used by those researching the OVERBEY surname... :-))

*** posted as another RAOGK... :-))
