Calvin S. Owens, d. 1859 Sussex County, New Jersey

I am interested in any information on ancestors of Calvin S. Owen(s) or his descendants. Members of the family appear as both "Owen" and "Owens" in different records. Calvin S. was a farmer in Sandyston Township in Sussex County, NJ in the early to mid 1800s. His grandson Noah Owen moved to western PA in the early 1900s, but much of the family supposedly remained in the northern New Jersey area.

If anyone is interested in this lineage, here is what I have compiled so far:

Calvin S. Owen(s) (b. 1810, d. 1859)
Spouse: Hannah Allet (b. 1803, d. after 1880)
Children: Temperance Ann (b. 1832), Catharine (b. 1834), John E. (b. by 1837), Lucy (b. 1838), Eben T. (b. 1840, d. 1917), Elizabeth (b. 1843), Hannah A. (b. 1849)

John E. Owen(s) (son of Calvin S., b. by 1837, d. after 1910)
Spouse: Mary P. Dixon (b. 1842, d. after 1900)
Children: John C. (b. 1864), William B. (b. 1866), Peter W. (b. 1867), Eliza G. (b. 1870), Margaret L. (b. 1874), Levi D. (b. 1876), Noah A. (b. 1882, d. 1965), Io/Iro (b. by 1885), Jake (b. 1887)

Noah A. Owen was a son of John E. and was my great-grandfather who moved to Erie, Pennsylvania in the early 1900s. His last name never appears as "Owens".

I greatly appreciate any information on this lineage!

Patrick Owen

The use of the words “card” and “slip” indicated that the pension payment voucher itself is not located in this series. Usually these placeholders indicate that the records were checked out and never returned.

There are multiple entries for many pensioners. This is especially true for widows pensions that are included in this series.
William Henry Owens m Fannie Mae Aldridge in Texas

I am looking for any information about William Henry Owens, all we know about him is; born Feb. 18th, 1865, somewhere after 1910 he married Fannie Mae Aldridge, and they lived in Texas. Prior to him marrying Fannie, he had another family, which was supposed to have included 3 daughters. We have no knowledge of exactly where he was born, his mother's name, or any sibblings although my grandpa remembered someone they called Uncle Obb. According to William's death certificate he was born in San Jacinto County, Texas, yet we can't find record of it. His father's name was Henry Owens. His children with Fannie were; Macy Whitten(Fannie's son prior to her marriage to William), Thomas, George, Henrey, Dock, Calvin, Albert, Starling, Walter Ed, and Mandy Lizabeth(I also have their dates of birth, at this point they have all passed on). Supposedly he had family connections around the Lubbock area. We have hit brick wall after brick wall as far as info on him goes. If you possibly have info please reply.
~Christa

William Owens

The William Owens that I am seeking was born Anglesey, Wales in 1836. His father died when Wm was a boy and in the 1850's Wm emigrated to the US - probably to Wisconsin firstly where his brother Robert and many other relatives lived in Cambria, Wisc.
On a visit to Lake Crystal Minn a few years ago I enquired about Wm and was told by his nephew that Wm had moved to the St Louis area and that contact had been lost a long time ago.
I came across an advert in a 1912 Welsh/American paper from an uncle of William, seeking info about him - the enquiry stated that when last heard of he was in the St Louis area.
I have had lots of info from St Louis Library incl obits and photo's of gravestones in St Pauls and St Marcus cemeteries and it looks likely that the William that is my connection lived at Bischoff St, St Louis. He died 1910.
One son Fred (1885-1951)was a policeman and he had 4 children, one of whome was Helen (1906-1989) who married a Steinberg.
Despite a wealth of info sent from St Louis Library nothing
sent to me confirms that I definately have the correct family!!
I have lots of info re family links in Wales and Minn/Iowa to pass on - assuming I am on the right track of course!!
Can anyone help??

Patrick and mary Alice had 2 children Francis and John. Francis was killed in the first world war aged 26. John died in 1921 aged 19.

Francis (known as Black Francie) was married twice, firstly to Maggie Hackett (sister of Mary Alice), and secondly to Sarah Lee. Francie and Sarah had children Vera, Josie and Frank.

Those owens would be first cousins of my great-grandmother Hannah Mullin (nee Owens), who was a daughter of Arthur Owens and Jane Rogers.

Any help on the descendents of Francis Owens and Mary McCristal would be appreciated

Joseph Mullin

William Edward Owens b 1854, North Wales, Great Britain

Here is what I have:

My 2great grandparents were William Edward Owens born 1854, in Holyhead, Angelseyshire, North Wales, Great Britain. His wife was named Maggie,(aka Margaret)Richards, who was also born in Wales. They both lived and died in Montgomery County, Iowa. I am trying to find their parents. (with no luck) I came across a news paper article about the farm they owned and found the info below:

They (William and Maggie)came following the wedding to Montgomery County, Iowa and lived on a farm south of Wales, Iowa. Maggie had a maternal uncle named William Thomas Edwards. The uncle William emigrated to the United States from Wales in the 1860's. He left his homeland because of religious oppression, he first settled in Coal Valley, Illinois. He was 40 years old when he resettled in the Welsh community north west of Red Oak, Iowa where he purchased 160 acres of farm land in Lincoln Township in 1871. His wife, Elizabeth Phillips Edwards, member of a family that settled in Henderson, Iowa, died in 1882. William Thomas Edwards died six years later, October 2, 1888. They left no children. He willed his property to a group of heirs, including a nephew, William Edward Owens. A law suit developed over the will and William did not receive title to his inheritance, including the land on which the Edward's home stood, until 1892. He later purchased the shares of the other heirs. He and Maggie moved to the Edward's farmstead 10 miles north west of Red Oak in 1888. In 1896, Owens purchased the 40 acres adjoining on the west and in 1897, a 120 acre tract on the east to increase the farm to a half section. They built the present house on the farmstead in 1900 and lived there until 1910 when they moved to 1311 First street in Red Oak....

I am trying to find out more about this uncle, William Thomas Edwards and his wife Elizabeth, if I can tie him into this family, I KNOW it will help me find William and Maggie's parents. I don't know for sure they were childless, but the article said "died without heirs" so he left the farm to his neice.

Here is all I know of the uncle William.

From: http://iagenweb.org/montgomery/bios/biolinco.htm

EDWARDS, WILLIAM T., farmer, P. O. Red Oak; Mr. Edwards was born April 14, 1835, at Holly Head, Englishire, Wales. His father's name was William and his mother's Catharine. He left home at the age of ten years and went on ship-board and followed the sea until he was eighteen years old. Abandoning sailor life he came to America, landing at San Francisco, and worked as a stevedore. Then went into the gold mines of Southern California and remained in the mines nineteen years. During this time he married Miss Elizabeth Thomas. Was married May 5, 1855. Left the mines in April, 1869. Took steamer to San Francisco, crossed the Isthmus by rail and then sailed to New York. From there he went to Scranton, Pennsylvania, and remained there about nine months. During that time he visited his native land. Returned to Scranton, and then moved to Rock Island, Illinois, and was there one year. Then he moved to his present home in the spring of 1870.

Iowa State Census Collection
Name: William T Edwards
Census 1885
Residence County: Montgomery
Residence State: Iowa
Locality: Lincoln
Birth Location: Wales
Marital Status: Widowed
Gender: Male
Birth Year: abt 1830

Household Members
William T Edwards 55 Born in Wales, Farmer.
Maggie Edwards 30 Born in Wales (not my Maggie)
Hugh Richards 35 Born in Wales
Burrial: Gomer cemetery, Montgomery County, Iowa (dates 4 May 1831-2 Oct 1888)

If you have any clues on how to trace this couple, or ideas on how to find out how he is related to my Maggie, as I cant find her parents. I will take any clues or advise, as I am lost as where to go.

I am seeking information regarding my g-g-grandfather Silas Owens, b. 03-05-1836 in Lawrence County, to John (Jack) Owens and Avarilla Brown. Silas married Mary Bales Terrell on 03-15-1854, Lawrence County, Indiana, and proceeded to father 15 children. However, he went missing sometime after 1880. I have not been able to find anything about him for years. According to my mother, it seems that information regarding him was always hush-hush. No one living knows what happened to him.

I`m hoping some one can help me on this line of Owens.
We all know that John Owens jr married Sarah Duck, daughter of William Duck and Eleanor Carr but who is Eleanor Carr that married John Owens jr after Sarah died?
Did John Owens jr marry Sarah`s mother, Eleanor after Sarah and her father William died or is this another Eleanor Carr?....Are you as confused as me now? ( smile )
It would probably be easier to figure this out if it wasn`t for the incorrect dates , married before born or died before married! Get what i mean?( smile )
I would appreciate any help and some right dates or at least some dates that are close or any other info.

Children of John Owens - Emelia, Thomas & Sarah Ellen b.1850's PA

John Owens b.abt 1824 Wales, came to Cambria Co., PA with his parents as a child. He is listed on the ship manifest. John's children are listed in their grandfather's will as the children of his son John, but does not leave anything to John. I cannot find John in any of the census records to determine his wife's name, or find the children anywhare else besides the 1860 census where two of the children are living with their grandparents. He obviously died between 1854 and September of 1875. Family history says that he died in an excavation. Perhaps he was a miner. His fathers land had a coal deposit. Any leads welcome.

Does anyone have info on any of these children of John Owens and unknown wife;

Emelia (Emma) Owens b. abt 1845 PA
Thomas Owens b. abt 1852 PA
Sarah Ellen Owens b. abt 1855 PA

PS. John's parents were Griffith and Ann Owens. His siblings were Griffith, David, Sarah Ann, Moses (died as a child), Margaret, and Elizabeth.

John and Ann (Griffiths) Owens in Llangian, Caernarvonshire, Wales

My gg grandparents John and Ann (Griffiths) Owens(s) may have lived in Caernarvonshire before coming to the U.S. in 1850. In the 1841 Census I find John Owens, born abt 1811 and Ann Owens, born about 1811 living in Llangian, Caernarvonshire, Wales. (Their years of birth match what I have) The farm was called Tanyffordo (sp?). Also, the following children were listed: Margaret (1833), John (1835), Owen (1838), Catherine (1841). Also listed is Margaret Griffiths (1766). This may be Ann's mother. I know that John and Ann had a son Owen (my records have him b. abt. 1841) But, we have no record of a Margaret, John or Catherine in this country. My mother, the oldest surviving member of this branch, has never heard of them. Margaret and John may have been old enough to be on their own when their parents emigrated and stayed in Wales. Perhaps Catherine died as a child, (I can’t find her in the BMD). I writing this in hopes it will ring a bell with other Owens researchers and we can make a connection. Thank you!

He was forced to grow up quickly after his father and two uncles were killed in a car accident, leaving his mother with seven young children. After graduating from St. Michaels Catholic High School, in 1962, he enlisted in the Air force. He was stationed at Larson Air Force Base. While on leave in the summer of 1965, he drove back to Flint, Mich. and married Beverly Bauman, his high school sweetheart.

After his discharge in 1966 he began working for Moses Lake Sheet Metal, in heating and air-conditioning. He then remained in the home he built, raised his children, and lived for the last 31 years. Fortunately he was given the time to spend time with his friends and family, such as the time as he went fishing in Alaska. Over his life he was active in several community groups, including Junior Chamber of Commerce, Elks, Boy Scouts, Boys and Girls Club, Projects 2000, Habitat for Humanity, Grant County Home Builders Association. He was dedicated to supporting Bill W. and friends. He will always be remembered for his easy conversation, and giving nature.

He was preceded in death by his parents. All of who reside in Michigan. He will also be missed by many nieces and nephews.

He made thousands of friends over his 45 years in the community, he will be missed by all who met and knew him. Upon his request there will not be a funeral, and his remains will be donated to cancer research. There will be a memorial service at Benson's funeral home on March 4 at 4 p.m. for all that knew and loved him.
Robert Allen OWENS, - Congr. Medal of Honor Recipient WW II

OWENS, ROBERT ALLEN

Rank and organization: Sergeant, U.S. Marine Corps. Born: 13 September 1920, Greenville, S.C. Accredited to: South Carolina. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving with a marine division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during extremely hazardous landing operations at Cape Torokina, Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on 1 November 1943. Forced to pass within disastrous range of a strongly protected, well-camouflaged Japanese 75-mm. regimental gun strategically located on the beach, our landing units were suffering heavy losses in casualties and boats while attempting to approach the beach, and the success of the operations was seriously threatened. Observing the ineffectiveness of marine rifle and grenade attacks against the incessant, devastating fire of the enemy weapon and aware of the urgent need for prompt action, Sgt. Owens unhesitatingly determined to charge the gun bunker from the front and, calling on 4 of his comrades to assist him, carefully placed them to cover the fire of the 2 adjacent hostile bunkers. Choosing a moment that provided a fair opportunity for passing these bunkers, he immediately charged into the mouth of the steadily firing cannon and entered the emplacement through the fire port, driving the guncrew out of the rear door and insuring their destruction before he himself was wounded. Indomitable and aggressive in the face of almost certain death, Sgt. Owens silenced a powerful gun which was of inestimable value to the Japanese defense and, by his brilliant initiative and heroic spirit of self-sacrifice, contributed immeasurably to the success of the vital landing operations. His valiant conduct throughout reflects the highest credit upon himself and the U.S. Naval Service.

Source: http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/moh1.htm

BURIAL INFORMATION

Location: Manila, The Philippine Islands

Cemetery: A.B.M.C.

I have a Owen Owens, all I know of him is he was born in 1817 in Bodwrog, Anglesey, Wales. I also think that at age 65 he was still in Wales. He had a son named William Edward Owens born in Hollyshead Angelseyshire, North Wales, Great Britain, and he died in Red Oak, Iowa in 1938. He was married to Maggie Ellen Richards, also from Wales and died in Red Oak, Iowa.

I have seen so many times that children are named after fathers or grandfathers, I was hoping this might be a clue to my family. If you would share any other info you have I would be greatful.

I'm trying to find relatives of Harry Owens who was born on 23rd July 1887 in Clay County, Indiana. He married Maggie Lee c. 1908 and had two children, Thelma Owens and Virginia Lee Owens who was born 18th August 1917 in Knox County, Indiana.
By 1930 Maggie was remarried as Harry had left the family and was living in India where he married my great grandmother Ruby Flora Sutcliffe. he had two children there, Enid Mildred Owens, born 25th December 1927 (my grandmother) and Lionel Stewart Owens, born 13th october 1930. I would love to find out if my grandmother has any living Owens relatives in America as she never knew about her father or his life in America before he went to India.
Harry's parents were Jacob and Iona Owens (née Cox).
Lucy/Lucinda Owens b. abt 1755 m. Elisha Pearce

I am trying to trace my maternal line and can't get any further back than Lucy or Lucinda Owens, whose father may have been William Owens. She married Elisha Pearce around 1774 and she died around 1787. Lucy had two children, Phebe Jane and William Pearce. I descend from Phebe Jane who married Jacob Horton. I see several family trees that include Lucy Owens and Jacob, but none list her mother's name or carry the line any further back than Lucy. If you can help, please email me at e.ferrellgray@comcast.net.

I am having my mtDNA tested and am waiting for refinement results, but the preliminary test is done and now I need to match that information to a lineage to get a complete picture of my maternal ancestry. Thank you.
