He lived in Paul's Valley.

Al went to Waco to visit him (the tornado hit the college that year) Al and James were very close. Al would ride the train from Houston to Ardmore and stay w/James, Uncle Iley, Mary, & Nelda Ray. Aunt Mary would fix then sack lunches and take them to the lake. She worked at Penny's there in Ardmore.

So much more. If you would like you can em me at home.

Have you ever heard of The Oxford Trunk? It was passed down for a few years until about 1950's. The key was lost but they did get it opened. It belonged to Edward Oxford (born 12 Mar 1769). In this trunk were several documents, tax papers, wills and deeds. Also ther was the Oxford Bible. Edward Oxford documented EVERYTHING. I have copies of copies of the pages from the Bible. It states that Phereby was born 4 Aug 1809 and that she married Elias or Eli Justice. Also in Edward's will he leaves "I give to my daughter Pheriby Justiceone negro girl named Fanny." In his will he mentioned each of his choldren by name. In the trunk were letters. There was a letter from Ecward Burke Oxford to his son James Madison C. Oxford. In this letter they talk about the civil war. I don't have a copy of the actual letter, but I do have a copy that someone typed up. Reba Carolyn Strickland Biehle is the one that went and documented the things in the trunk. She then wrote a summary of what all was in it and a short history of the Oxfords. The trunk and most of it's contents are in the Atlanta Archives. I haven't seen it, but i think I will try before too long. My mother in law and her syblings and cousins were really into genealogy. They made copies of everything for everyone...lol. Real pack rats! I hope this has been of some help.

Merrill Hannah Roan
Thomaston, Georgia
mhroan@windstream.net

I had to replumb my memory for this, I've been away from it so long. I believe Pheraby and Eli (Elias, Elijah???) Justice were the parents of Sarah Ann Justice who was the mother of (James) Millard Griffin. Sarah Ann would have been born about 1842 or 1843. I believe I found the correct Justices in the 1850 census in AL. There is no mother and the only female is Sarah born about the correct time. Additionally the eldest son in this family of Justices is named Tillman D. Sarah Ann's only living child was James Millard Griffin. Sarah Ann would have died about 1860 or 1861. Millard then went to his mother's kin to be raised but no one knows who that was, so since all of the "kin" in her family were males (per the census) I would assume he would have been sent to them. If some of this Justice line would look for a Millard or a Randolph born about 1858 - 1860, perhaps we could all benefit genealogically speaking. There is a lot to tell but I can say this, the Justices did not like Mr. James Bartlett Griffin or so I think--I'll give my reasons later.
PS I had a cousin I haven't seen for years by the name of Reba Carol or so I recall but her maiden name would have been Rhodes. Hmmmmmm. Thanks, Phyllis

I have her on our tree. In Edward Oxford's Bible (born 12 Mar 1769), it states that Phereby Oxford was born 4 Aug 1809 and that she married an Elias (or Eli) Justice.

This Bible was found in what the family calls "The Oxford Trunk". Reba Carolyn Strickland Biehle examined the trunk and wrote a paper about it. It has a ton of information in it. It really shows what record keepers the Oxfords were.

Phereby's parents were Edward Oxford B- 12 Mar 1769 D- 7 June 1833. He married Nancy McFarland 7 Jan 1793. Nancy died about 1828. He then married Anna McCutchen 28 May 1829. His children with Nancy are Sally born 14 Dec 1793 married Robert Pickett, Mary born 13 June 1795 married Thomas C. Pickett, Tillman D. born 6 Jul 1797, Edward Burk born 29 Feb 1799 married Susan Bridges born18 Nov 1804,Peter M. born 19 Apr 1801, Stephen H. born 11 Mar 1803 and died 1813, Elizabeth W. born 11 May 1805 married Corben L. Bridges, Washington J. born 10 Jun 1807, Phereby born 4 Aug 1809 married Elias (or Eli) Justice, Charlotte born 25 Jul 1811 married ? Johnson, Martha born 12 Oct 1813 married ? McCutcheon and Eliza Ann born 12 Mar 1815.

Edward's father was Edward Oxford born 1724 and died 1794 or 1795. He married Mary Briggs who died abut 1809. It doesn't say Briggs but that is what I have found on a marriage record. It states that they were married and he was from Virginia. It was a U.S. and international marriage. Their children are Jonathan, Edward, Elizabeth who married Levi Barnard, Nancy married ? Richardson and Polly who married Moses Wade.

That's all that I have proof of. I know others that have the family going back a bit, but I haven't found the proof yet.

I'm not sure where she is from or lived. I haven't gotten that far in my research. I have all my mother in laws records after she died. I do have some Davis in these records.
Oxford of Burke County, North Carolina

I have Davis ancestors that go back into the 1700's in Burke County. My William Davis was born abt. 1765. His wife was named Sarah (Sally). A couple days ago A cousin in North Carolina copied & sent to me a small note book that was used in the 1800's to record family births. It is very old and some of the corners are missing. The females were all listed by their maiden names. In the list is a Sarah Oxford. In my research I have only one Sarah that I don't know her name & that is Willliams wife. Does anyone know of a connection to the Oxfords of Burke County in the 1700's?

I am in no way related to the Oxford family and cannot answer any questions you may have. I simply saw this in the local paper, and wanted to post it to help others researching their families. Hope it helps someone!

Here is the caption that was included with the photo:

"A tisket, a tasket"

"Joshua and Lugenia Oxford pose with their granddaughter, Etta Robinson, who is seated comfortably in a split-oak basket. Joshua and Lugenia lived between Fayetteville and Goshen in the settlement known as Oxford Bend. Etta was born about 1912 to Cleo and Dolly Oxford Robinson. Dolly Robinson died in the influenza epidemic of 1918. The 1920 U.S. Census lists Cleo as a 34-year-old widowed carpenter raising three children- Etta, Noma and Pat - with the help of housekeeper Louise Anderson. The photo is courtesy of Kermit Welch."

This was published in the Northwest Arkansas Times, and courtesy of the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History, 118 W. Johnson Avenue, Springdale, AR, 72764.

This rings a bell, my family name is Brooks, but family legend has it that our real name might be oxford. Seems my great-great-great grandfather was in the civil war with some Ballew brothers and was from Texas. He went to Texas or was from Texas, he was later wanted for murder in texas and came back to the Ballew brothers here in ga and took the name Brooks, and married a sister of theirs and later in years was captured here in Ga by texas rangers and taken back to texas and spent about ten years in prisoon and then came back to Ga and keep the name Brooks. Hope this might help. If you know of this possible family matter please contact me.

Samuel Oxford Born 1707 in Hadleigh Suffolk to Thomas Saunders and Sarah Lulpeck according to my research died in 1708 there is a gravestone in Hadleigh church cemetery. My Grandmothers line was out of John Oxford 1698 Samuel's brother. I would be interested in your source for this information. I also researched this and according to the records U.S. and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900 about Samuel Oxford and Mary Ann Brown.

Samuel was born 1700 in Virginia. Mary was born 1701 in Virginia and they married in Virginia in 1720.

I know his mother's name was Evelyn and he probably had siblings, although I don't know who and what their names were. Please email me at ashleymh007@yahoo.com and we can trade trees to see if they line up.
Re: Roger Oxford 1683-1759 Culpeper Co, VA

Do you have any idea what the given name of Mary (Oxford) Brown's husband was? Some claim that Coleman Brown, a son of Daniel and Elizabeth (Coleman) Brown married her, but others think that this Coleman Brown married a different Mary, whose last name is not known (versus Mary Oxford).

There was a Thomas Brown who was supposedly born in the 1740s, and he lived as an adult in the Lunenburg/Mecklenburg Co., VA area (Thomas died in Mecklenburg Co., VA in the 1790s, as I recall, and he left a will). Per various clues, this Thomas Brown was PROBABLY out of the same overall Brown family as the above-mentioned Daniel Brown (Daniel Brown came into the Orange/Culpeper Co., VA area from Essex Co., VA, and Daniel died about 1747). I have seen some records (unsubstantiated by me) that claim that the father of the Thomas Brown in Lunenburg/Mecklenburg was an earlier Thomas Brown who was born in the early-1700s. Could this Thomas Brown in Lunenburg/Mecklenburg have been the son of Mary (Oxford) Brown and her apparent Brown husband (who might have also been named Thomas Brown)? As I recall, there was also a John Brown in Lunenburg/Mecklenburg Co., VA in the 1770s and beyond, and he was the clerk of the court there. I guess that this John Brown COULD have been the other known son of Mary (Oxford) Brown.

The father of the above-mentioned Daniel Brown was a Francis Brown "II" (son of Francis Brown "I" who died in Essex Co., VA in 1691/1692), and Francis Brown "II" left a will in Essex Co., VA in 1708/1709. A Thomas Brown was the witness for that will in 1708/1709, and researchers of this overall Brown family can only assume that this Thomas Brown was a close relative of Francis Brown "I." This "earliest" Thomas Brown appeared on a list of people in Essex Co., VA in 1704, and he does not seem to have appeared in any Essex Co., VA records after the above-mentioned will, so MAYBE he moved to the Spotsylvania/Orange/Culpeper Co., VA area, well before some of the others in this overall Brown family out of Essex Co., VA moved there.

Anyway, IF Coleman Brown truly did not marry Mary Oxford (as some researchers now believe), then it must have been another Mr. Brown who married her. While there were apparently at least two unrelated Brown families in Culpeper Co., VA (as shown by DNA testing on some living male Browns who trace their roots back to Culpeper in the 1700s), IF Mary Oxford's husband was out of the same overall Brown family as Daniel Brown, a "potential Thomas Brown" is as good a guess as any as to who that husband was (and the father of the Thomas Brown in Lunenburg/Mecklenburg had to be living SOMEWHERE in the early-mid-1700s).

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I don't know of a connection. Edney Oxford was the daughter of Thomas Morgan Oxford and Harriet Phillips. She was 15 years old in the 1900 census in Wise County, Texas. I can't find anymore info about her. She is not burried with the family. Thanks for answering me. I wish I had more to tell you.

I am trying to find Edney Oxford, born October 1884 in Washington County, Arkansas. She was in the 1900 census in Draco, Wise County, Texas. She was the daughter of Thompson and Harriet Oxford. I can't find where she married or died, but she just disappeared after 1900. If you have any info I would like to hear from you. Thank you
