Hi - I would be interested in seeing the dates and spouses of the ch. of Thomas McGill and Laura Ann Ozier, plus any similar data on Laura Ozier's siblings, especially Malinda/Melindie (mar. Nathan Houlton) that you mentioned in your posts. You may contact me directly at b2222b@yahoo.com, or post the info here; if you contact me by email, I will reply from another address.

The only children I have for John Ozier and his unk. wife are Laura Ann (youngest?), Allen b. ca. 1794, Reuben b. 2 Feb 1802, James R. b. ca. 1807, Lloyd b. ca. 1812, and Dianna F. b. ca. 1815, but there are some gaps in these ages, and early census records suggest up to 5 additional daughters.

The census records I have, which I believe apply to this John Ozier, are as follows:
1810, Montgomery Co. NC, p. 558: Jno. Ozier 21010-22010
1830, Carroll Co. TN, p. 150: John Ozier 00012101-0102000

So I think these census records suggest 5 more unidentified daus. - 2 b. 1795-1800, 2 b. 1800-1810, and 1 b. 1810-1815; perhaps Malinda/Melindie corresponds to one of these. Did the photo albums you mentioned identify any other siblings of Laura and Melindie?

Also, you mentioned that Malinda/Melindie Ozier married Nathan Houlton. Is it possible that his surname was Holton or Haltom? There was a Haltom family in Montgomery Co. NC, and a number of them also moved to TN (and also to Owen Co. IN, another place where many Montgomery Co. NC families moved). Haltom is also found spelled Halton/Holton/Holtom/Altom/etc., and is sometimes hard to trace because of this.

Here is a comment concerning the birthdate of Laura Ann Ozier, which I believe you gave as 27 May 1827. However, I noted that the 1830 census lists a female age 5-10 but no female 0-5. Also, the 1850 census gives Laura's age as 29. Could the 1827 birth year you gave for her be 1821 instead? If her birthdate is from a written record like a Bible, sometimes the number one is written with a prominent "hash mark" at the top, which makes it look like a seven. If the date is from her tombstone and it is still legible (but the birthdate isn't clear or given at all), perhaps it gives her death date and age, from which a birthyear could be determined, or maybe there are other records giving her age. I was just curious about this.

Barbara, if I have told you this before, please forgive the repetition. I have Thomas McGill's wife as Laura Ozier the daughter of John Ozier. I have a copy of their marriage certificate in Carroll County TN on 4 Mar 1841, and have them in the 1850 census in Madison County, TN. A Thomas McGill is living near Richard and Dianna Ozier Wood in Benton County, TN in 1840. Dianna and Laura were sisters, so this connection makes sense. I don't have death dates, etc. on Laura, but have not worked on this much.

Thanks for this information. I am the descendant of John Ozier 1770, through his daughter, Dianna Ozier Wood of Carroll and Benton County, TN. I have the same children of John and his wife as you do, and am pretty sure of the accuracy of these. Like you, I don't believe Amy Arina Ozier Butler is necessarily from this particular family. In regard to John's wife, I don't have a name either, but here are a couple of thoughts...I have seen a name Winifred Horton or Malinda Houlton, but no proof.

Re: Ozier in Tennessee

Hi John - here is some information on the name Ozier; I am not an Ozier descendant, so perhaps there are other more knowledgable sources concerning this name.
It appears that Ozier is an anglicization of the French name Auget. An intermediate form of it found in England and America is Ogier. It may also be seen as Osier and perhaps other phonetically similar spellings. I know of three branches of Oziers in America - two of them lived in Montgomery Co. NC and then Carroll Co. TN, but came to America at different times. The third lived in Maine. I will arbitrarily call them branche #1, #2, and #3.
Branch #1 - Louis Ogier Sr. b. 1726 Moncoutant, Lower Poitou, France, married 15 Jul 1751 at St. John's Church, Hackney, London to Catherine Creuze. Louis Sr., Catherine, and most of their children came from London to NC Feb 1774 on the ship Union. Louis Sr. died 1780 in Charleston, SC; his presence in Charleston at this point in the Rev. War might indicate that he was a royalist, but may also have to do with his occupation (weaver, probably of silk); his widow Catherine apparently returned to England and died 1808 in Hackney, Middlesex. Some sources list the parents of Louis Sr., but in my opinion the proof is lacking or, at best, conflicting. His son Louis Ozier Jr. was born 1753 in London, came with his parents to NC in 1774, and married 2 Oct 1783 Susannah Martin (possibly in Montgomery Co. NC); in 1774 his occupation was "silk weaver". Louis Jr. died in Charleston, SC in 1820 and Susannah died there in 1827. The only child known to me is "Amy Arina" Ozier b. 28 Feb 1799 NC (probably Montgomery Co. NC) and married about 1815 Neely Butler. Her name "Amy Arina" is spelled several different ways and is probably a mild corruption of the Dutch given name "Annetje Arians", a name found in Dutch families who immigrated to NY (Annetje Arians Van Amsterdam married Jacob Jansen Van Etten (later Vaneaton etc.) who immigrated to NY ca. 1650); similar Dutch names are Ariaentje and Jannetje. Although I list her name as Amy Arina Ozier, her first name may actually have been Anny/Anna/etc. Note that I am NOT suggesting that she had Dutch ancestors - similar names are found in many unrelated families, and examples include Anna Arrene, Arrena Jeanettie, Amy Irena, etc. Neely Butler is sometimes called Nathaniel or Cornelius, or both, for which Neely/Nealy may be a nickname, but I believe this was done without proof; I subscribe to the theory that his name is taken from the surname Neely, a family which also lived in Montgomery Co. NC and Carroll Co. TN. Since the Butler family appears to have lived in Montgomery Co. NC until around 1825 when they moved to Carroll Co. TN, I would guess that Neely and Amy Arina were married in Montgomery Co. NC. The Montgomery Co. NC courthouse was destroyed by arson in 1843, which has made tracing families residing there very difficult. Neely and Amy Arina moved to Carroll Co. TN around 1825, and then to AR around 1836, in the area of Carroll Co. AR and Stone Co. MO; they are noted as the ancestors of President Lyndon B. Johnson, so their ancestry can be found in a number of places, not always presented with accuracy.
Branch #2 - John Ozier was born in France and naturalized 30 Apr 1736 in Cecil Co. MD; he married Elizabeth Hutchison and left a will dated 26 Aug 1777 in New Castle Co. DE, prov. Dec 1777, which named 9 children. His son William Ozier b. ca. 1750 New Castle Co. DE and died after 1810 when he is enumerated in the census of Montgomery Co. NC (page 564: Wm. Ozier 11101-30000). This census record indicates he may have had at least 6 chidren; his wife appears to have died a few years before 1810. Three of his chidren have been identified to me - Wm. Jr., Elizabeth (b. 1771, d. 1844, mar. William Bruton), and John (b. ca. 1780 NC) - John Ozier's wife is unknown, but he appears to have had at least 11 ch. John is enumerated in 1810 in Montgomery Co. NC (page 558: Jno. Ozier 21010-22010) but moved to Carroll Co. TN before 1830 where he is enumerated in the census there (page 150: John Ozier 00012101-01020001). The children of John Ozier known to me are Allen, Reuben, James R., Lloyd, Dianna F., and Laura, all of whom remained in Carroll Co. TN or thereabouts. Some sources have included Amy Arina (Ozier) Butler as a daughter of William Ozier b. 1750, but there is no proof of this beyond their (coincidental?) presence in the same area of NC. Some sources have combined William Ozier and Louis Ozier Jr. and called him William Louis Ozier, , but this appears to be a convenient fabrication which allowed Amy Arina to be included in this family.
Branch #3 - a Lewis/Louis Ogier was b. 28 Oct 1760 in the same church in London as Louis Ogier Jr. b. 1753; this younger Louis Ogier was the son of Abraham Ogier b. 1728 London, ENG and Mary Cooper (mar. 1753 London), Abraham said to be son of Andre Ogier and Marie Ann Hanrot. Louis, son of Abraham, went to Knox Co. ME and is not to be confused with Ogier/Ozier in NC.
Notes: (1) Branch #2 came to America a generation before Branch #1 and followed a different track to NC; however, it is possible that they knew one another. I have noticed that Branch #2 followed the same track from New Castle Co. DE to Montgomery/Rowan Co. NC and then Carroll Co. TN as the Bracken and Lowrie/Lowrey families.
(2) as always, any data given here should be verified before incorporating it into databases.

OZIER Family Montgomery Co., NC

Looking for information on the OZIER family from Montgomery Co., NC.

Parents Jacob and Sarah Ozier supposedly had 10 children:
Elizabeth
Joseph
James Rubin
Jacob
Perry
Sarah
Priscilla
Serena
Catherine
Patience Ann

I've been told that Jacob was a minister. This family was found in Montgomery County, NC in the 1800 Census. Jacob was born ca 1772, and died 30 Jan 1853 in Cuthbert, Randolph County, Georgia. His wife Sarah ??, was born ca. 1779, and died between 1830 -1840 probably in Harris County, Georgia.

Their oldest daughter Elizabeth is my gg grandmother. She was born in NC 30 October 1797, and died 27 August 1838, near Hamilton in Harris County, Georgia. She married Henry Macon in NC before 1818. I am looking for documentation for this marriage and any other information on the Ozier family.

Any information or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

They came from Montgomery Co., N.C. through Carroll Co. TN - Fayette Co., TN - White Co., AR - to Boone Co., AR. We came to CA. This is not far from where Nealey Butler and Arianna OZIER descendants still live today, around Blue Eye on the MO and AR border. Bob are you from there? I have a lot of their information they gave me when I visited them. We were both born near there.
Any help reaaching back in time on this line is appreciated. thank You in advance.
Ozier and Wilma

Judy - happened to be working on this family today. Researcher Robert Allen has the following on Dianna (he identifies her as "Denny F. Ozier", so here's another variation on the name for your collection; I would vote for Dianna as her real name - this given name is found among other Carroll Co. TN families of the period, who also spell it with two N's rather than the usual one):

Denny F. Ozier (dau. of John Ozier of Carroll Co. TN) m. Richard N. Woods, b. 1812. They lived in Benton Co. TN and are buried in the Hollingsworth Cemetery there.

Children:

Elizabeth Woods, b. 1840
Martha Woods, b. 1841
Mary Jane Woods, b. 1843
John W. Woods, b. 1844
Amanda Woods, b. 1848-Mar 9, 1994, m. W. Nathan Wilson b. 1847
Andrew J. Woods b. 1853
Malinda Tennessee Woods b. 1856

According to Robert Allen, Denny F. Ozier is a sister of James R. Ozier who mar. Martha _?_. In the 1860 census of Carroll Co. TN I find Robert E. Wood age 24 and his wife "S. C." age 18 and dau. Martha age 9/12, all b. TN, enumerated with James and Martha Ozier. Robert Allen doesn't list a Robert E. Wood as a son of Richard N. Wood(s) and Denny F. Ozier, so I'm not sure what the relationship is between Richard N. Woods (Wood?) and Robert E. Wood, if there is one. Will be checking the 1850 census of Benton Co. TN to see what might be there.

Robert Allen gives the father of Denny F. Ozier and her brother James Ozier as John Ozier who came from Montgomery Co. NC to Carroll Co. TN ca. 1830; wife of John Ozier is not identified.

Three other siblings of Denny and James Ozier are said to be as follows:

1. Reuben Ozier b. 2 Feb 1802, d. 1 Sep 1875, bur. Ozier cem., (Carroll Co. TN?), married 1st Elizabeth _?_, 6 ch.; mar. 2nd 21 May 1859 Elizabeth J. Nutt b. 1823, 2 ch.

2. Allen Ozier b. 1807 m. Anny _?_; possibly one son Lloyd

3. Laura Ozier b. 1821 m. Thomas McGill, 6 ch.

This data is all tentative and requires verification.

Ozier in Tennessee

Does anyone have anything on Dianna/Dawn/Dolly Ozier in Carroll or Benton CO., TN? I have seen all 3 or those variations of her name. She married Richard N. Wood, died and is buried in Bnton, Co., TN. Any help appreciated. She may have been born in NC about 1815.
