I don't know where my brain went when I posted that reply. My Isham and Fleming are sons of Matilda Ann DeLong. She did not marry Calvin he is her son. She married John Pack on Dec 31, 1835 in Patrick County, VA. Isham died at age 20 of yellow jaundice and John was listed as the informant on his death certificate. John lists his relationship to Isham as step-father. Isham was born around Dec 1834 and died in Tazewell County, VA on May 15, 1854.
The other Isham I found was born between 1800 and 1807. He was married first to Sally (Sarah) Lawson on 3 June 1824 in Grayson County, VA. Sally died on 15 June 1853 in Patrick County, VA. Isham and Sally had the following children Milly b. 1832, James M. b. 1835 and Mary b. 1838, these dates are based on census ages. Their marriage (Marriage Register #1) and her death date (Death Records in Patrick County, VA 1853-1870) is recorded in Grayson County, VA records. Her parents are listed as James and Nancy Lawson.
On Nov 19 1857 Isham marries Mary Bowman in Patrick County, VA (Patrick County Virginia Marriages 1854-1874 compiled by Jimmie Martin Steele,page 19. This record is also available at the Patrick County courthouse.) Mary was the daughter of Norman Bowman and wife, she is 24 and divorced. Isham (Isom) is the son of Thomas and wife he is 40 and widowed. The minister was Julius Terrill. They had at least three children Floyd born 1860, Rachel born 1862 and Cresy born 1866, again there may have been more children and the ages are based on census records.

Re: Essie Mae Pack daughter of Charles Pack and Maude Roman

Is this Charles and Maude in 1930 and 1920? The 1930 entry is the only one from 1880 - 1930 for any Charles Pack with wife Maude I found.

If, to take an extreme example, your Charles lived in Kentucky all his life, was white and always used "Charley" (or "Catfish") instead of his legal name, this isn't them. If Essie Mae was born after 1930, in Colorado, and was black or mixed, this could be them.

http://www.tedpack.org/goodpost.html
has some tips for posting an effective query. Complete strangers who are not related will sometimes help you, but you have to give them some clues.

1930, Pueblo, Pueblo, Colorado; Roll 249; Page: 13B; Enumeration District: 33; Image: 841.0.

Pack, Charles, head, 47, Tenn, Tenn, Tenn, laborer steel mill
Pack, Maude, wife, 39, Tenn, Tenn, Tenn
Pack, Kedrick, son, 16, Colo, Tenn, Tenn
Pack, Mildred, dau, 7, Colo, Tenn, Tenn
Everyone is black.

1920, Pueblo, Pueblo, Colorado; Roll T625_170; Page: 7B; Enumeration District: 235; Image: 986.

Cathey, Maude, head, Mulatto, 31, Widow, Tenn, USA, USA, laundress day work
Cathey, Kedrick, son, Mulatto, 6, Colorado, Ky, Tenn
Pack, Charles, Boarder, Black, 35, Tenn, Tenn, Tenn, foreman or fireman, steel mill

============

Kedrick is obviously a step-son. Mildred is a daughter and half-sister to Kedrick.

Here is Kedrick's mother-in-law:

Stell, Ella B.
Ella B. Stell - Pueblo Chieftain - April 13, 2000 - Ella B. Stell, 103, passed away April 8, 2000, at Shamar Village Care Center. Born Oct. 28, 1896, in Sulphur Springs, Texas. She was one of 12 children born to the union of Allen and Mattie (Green) Bowens. Shortly after her birth, the family moved to the Oklahoma Territory where she attended school. She was a devout Christian and served many years as church mother at St. Paul Church of God In Christ in Oklahoma under the leadership of the late superintendent, Elder John M. Statum. In the 1980s she moved to Pueblo and joined Bethlehem Baptist Church, where she had been a faithful member until her passing. Preceded in death by her parents, other siblings, husband, Thorton Stell, daughter, Hazel M. Johnson. Visitation today, Angelus Chapel, 1 p.m. until 7 p.m. Funeral service, 2 p.m. Friday, Bethlehem Baptist Church, Rev. F.L. Chandler officiating. Interment, Imperial Memorial Gardens.
============
Here is Kedrick

Pack, Kedrick Charles
Kedrick Charles Pack - Pueblo Chieftain - May 30, 2004 - Kedrick Charles Pack, 90, lifetime Puebloan, born Dec. 6, 1913, passed away May 25, 2004. After graduation from high school, Mr. Pack stepped forward to serve his country in the U.S. Army where he attained the rank of staff sergeant, serving in Central Europe, Naples Foggia, Rhineland and Rome Arno Apennies. After his military stint, Mr. Pack worked for the former CF&I Steel Mill's open hearth department and retired with 38 years of service. A member of Eureka Lodge No. 2 F&AM (PHA) where in 1996, his fellow brethren elected him Mason of the Year for his contribution to his lodge and community from then worshipful master, Russell E. Creighton. He also was a fifty-year member of the James H. McNeal American Legion Post 163, Department of Colorado. He enjoyed bowling, watching football and working in his garden. Survived by his wife of 62 years, Katherine Anderson Pack; daughters, Beverly Kay Taylor and Janet Mildred Cullingham; grandchildren, Alica (Keith) Martin, Bronica Garces, Kamala Cullingham, Thomas Cullingham; great-grandchildren, Melissa Ann Martin, Jasmine Speight, Tifanny Speight; sister-in-law, Marlene (James) Brown; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Maude Moody Pack; a son, Charles Franklin Levell. Visitation, noon until 4 p.m. Monday, Angelus Chapel. Funeral service, 1 p.m. Tuesday, Bethlehem Baptist Church, with the Rev. John Wayne Richardson officiating. Military honors at graveside by the Pueblo Veterans Ritual Team.
============

Mildred is another story. "Kedrick" is a wonderful name for genealogy. There are not many of them.

Hi Russell. I am descended which might be in that line. We really have nothing concrete above Jeremiah, but som of our trees go back in the area you are leading to. Another similarity is that our line definitely has a Green Smith. As I say anything I say above Jeremiah wuold eb speculation, but I would love to share notes with you.
Lessons Learned from Jerome Turner Pack

This is longer than most posts, but about average for me. There’s a joke about rambling and unicorns at the bottom. Here are some tips about finding your ancestors in the census, using Jerome Turner Pack as an example.

My hunt started with a message:

Hi Ted,

I just read your info. I am great-grand daughter of J. Turner/ Jerome T. Pack married to Susie E. Justice. My great grandfather is shown as J.T., Jerome T. and J. Turner, born around 1859. Susie E. was native Cherokee, at least 1/2, mother's side. I just got started in this search and cannot find Jerome T./J.Turner's parents. My family resided in Cheattham, TN born and died in that county. Can you enlighten me?

Jeana in Oklahoma.

==========

So, I looked on Ancestry’s census images for Jerome Pack in Cheatham County in any year. There was just one:

1910, Civil District 7, Cheatham, Tennessee;
Jerome T Pack, 39
Susie E Pack, 34
Herbert L Pack, 14
Loyd E Pack, 10
Clide E Pack, 7
Beulah Pack, 4
Joseph M Pack, 3/12

Note he was born in 1871, not 1859, and there is just one “t” in “Cheatham”.

Lesson 1: Don’t trust your correspondents, especially if they just got started. Help them, of course; they are dear people, and we genealogists are known for being warm, wise and gracious. Just don’t assume newcomers have their facts straight.

==========

I can’t find them in 1920. I do find a Clyde E Pack, 17, relation “nephew,” in Dickson County, Tennessee, a Bulah Pack, 15, relation "no relation", in Montgomery County, Tennessee, and a Lon or Loye Pack, 19, in South Dakota, relation “servant”, which was the term for hired hand back then. He was mucking out stalls and plowing, not wearing a black dress coat and announcing tea was served. That hints, but doesn’t prove, that Jerome died and either his wife died with him or her new husband didn’t want the teens cluttering up the house. No lesson here, just a need for more research.

==========

I turn to Tennessee Marriages, an Ancestry Data base. I find:

J Turner Pack to Susie Justice on 7 Mar 1895 in Dickson County.

Dickson, not Cheatham.
Lesson 2: Check other sources, if you have them. See above about not trusting your correspondent, too.

==========

I search for any Pack born 1871 or so in Dickson County in 1900. No luck. Then I search for any Jerome, then any Turner, limiting the search to Dickson and the birth year to 1871 (+/- 5) each time. Bingo!

1900, Civil District 13, Dickson, Tennessee:
Turner Back, 30
Susie Back, 23
Herbert Back, 4
Loy Back, 11/12

Back, Pack. They sound alike, as you know if you’ve ever ordered pizza as Mr. Pack and heard them announce “Mr. Back, your pizza is ready”. Susie, Herbert and Loyd match 1910.

Lesson 3: Try given names only. Soundex isn’t perfect. Note this works best when you have a birth year range, a rare given name and a small county. If your man is John and he lived in Chicago, you won’t find him by given name alone.

Lesson 4: People sometimes switch between first and middle names. My correspondent warned me. John Wesley Pack becomes Wesley J Pack, or JW, or WJ.

He is born in 1869 on the 1900, not 1871.

Lesson 5: use a 5-year date range for birth year.

==========

Let us see if he is in Dickson in 1880. I search for any Pack (that is, given name blank, surname “Pack”, with soundex) born in 1869, with a 5-year range, in Dickson County. Here he is:

1880: District 7, Dickson, Tennessee:
L. D. Pack, Self, 55, TN, Farmer, NC, NC
Martha Pack, Wife, 34, TN, Keeping House, TN, TN
(All kids TN, TN, TN)
Saleanna Pack, Dau, 18
Ada Pack, Dau, 16
Zippora Pack, Dau, 14
Tusnur Pack, Son, 11
Fletcher Pack, Son, 9
Charley Pack, Son, 7
Lennore Pack, Son, 4
Lou Pack, Dau, 2

“Tusnur” isn’t a common given name, but it is close enough to “Turner” that this is our boy, 11 years old and living with his parents. Whoever transcribed the page did the best they could with chicken tracks.

Lesson 6: Don’t trust that the given name will be spelled correctly.

==========

I look for all the Packs in Dickson County in 1870 and find:

1870: District 7, Dickson, Tennessee;
S D Pack, 45
Martha Pack, 35
Bettie Pack, 8
Ada Pack, 5
Mary Pack, 3
Jerone Pack, 1
Jesse Stong, 19

Mr. Pack's initials look like "L D" to me in the image, even though they are indexed as "S D". Martha, the wife, is 34 in 1880 and 35 here in 1870. “Mary” here is “Zippora” in 1880, probably, and “Turner” in 1880 is “Jerone” here.

This is the same lesson I learned all night – don’t trust the given names will be the same throughout the years. It shows you can't always trust the ages given, either.

==========

Here they are in 1860, Middle Division, Dickson, Tennessee:
L D Pack, 28, NC
M S Pack, 17, NC
B B Pack, 1/12, NC
(Census taken September 27th)

Lesson 7: Birth states won’t always match. Compare these to LD and Martha on the 1880.

==========

I try for them in 1900 to see what L D’s name was, and find Martha widowed in 1900, in Civil District 13, Dickson, Tennessee

Martha Pack, 58, widowed
Fletcher Pack, 29, son
Charley Pack, 26, son
Hardy Pack, 19, son
Fred Fowler, 16, boarder

==========

Back to Tennessee Marriages.

Leroy D Pack to Martha L Sims on 5 Oct 1859 in Dickson County.

“Martha Sims” matches “M S” in 1860. “Leroy D” matches “L D.” They had a one-month old child in September 1860, so the date fits. Most couples wasted no time making sure their union produced issue, back then. My “L D” on the census is almost certainly Leroy D.

I’ve found Jerome Turner’s parents and learned some lessons about hunting people on the census.

==========

Promised joke about rambling:

My brother limits his personal correspondence to adding his name to the Christmas Newsletter his wife writes every year. Last month I told him that the USPS gives you a break on the second ounce. It is only 17 cents, although the first one is 42. If you write a 6-page letter and throw in a couple of pictures of the kids, you can send it first-class for 59 cents instead of using two first-class stamps for 84 cents. I have a small stock of 17-cent stamps for just such occasions.

He looked at me like I had told him if he ever shot a unicorn, to make sure the sun was behind him, use a medium speed film for detail, a small f-stop for good depth of field, and make sure the background was uncluttered. He knew I was trying to help, but the chance he would ever be in a position to use my advice was terribly small.

Hi, Old Crow

If you post your data here, instead of just sending it to one person, then

1) Any Pack researcher who stumbles across this board can read it, instantly, without having to write to you. (You do have to be careful not to reveal data about living people.)

2) You don't have to send the same data out to 17 different descendants, one after the other, as they stumble across this board and write to you.

3) It will still be here, even if you hit the lotto in a good weekend, buy an island, say "Fiddle dee dee" to genealogy, cancel your Yahoo! account and devote your efforts to findling the perfect lime reduction sauce for shrimp grilled on skewers over coconut logs on white sandy beaches.

(If that happens, I would be happy to be your QC inspector. I'll work for room and board; the food should include rum, mixed with tropical fruit juices in tall frosty glasses, delivered by waiters in mess coats and short pants as I sit under the palms. The QC inspector's house should have at least 14 rooms and be no more than 25 yards from the ocean.)

(Shrimp 3 times a week; the other 4 will be devoted to the perfect cabernet reduction sauce for steak, the perfect wood to use for chicken, the perfect lemon-based sauce for salmon, and chef's choice. Your chef will be from the Cordon Blu, of course.)

(I can give your children swimming lessons in the lagoon, too. I have many talents.)

4) If you change your e-mail address, or Yahoo! changes it for you, just change it once in your profile, instead of posting a follow-up to all 87 messages you posted on all the boards.

(Yahoo! will probably keep their name, even if they merge with Microsoft [or Sony, Sears, UPS or Ford Motor Company, for that matter], but many, many small ISPs give their old customers new e-mail addresses when they merge.)

Re: Alonzo Pack-1900, Texas

Yes, I have looked at that Alonzo from White CO, TN and have found he is not the same Alonzo. I can find nothing that puts this Alonzo in Texas at all, so I am pretty sure he is not the same. Also, Minnie was about 2 when Alonzo left, which puts him at 1901. The Alonzo (son of Pleasant and Bethena) married in 1899 in White Co, TN, so he would have had to make good time to be in Texas and Tennesee at the same time. Thanks for the view though.

Now, there was a mention of a Roscoe Pack (although born 1889) that could be a good starting point. I do know my Alonzo came to Texas with a Roscoe and an Arthur. Arthur's family moved to Ft. Worth area at some time, and I do know that there is a cousin to Minnie still (in 2006) living there. I have met him and I can recall when he would visit my grandfather and they would go fishing together in Arkansas.

This is a big mess with him leaving Flora as he did, but I am still determined to find this rascal.

Thanks for all the information you have posted.

Incidentally, I had a post asking if anyone knew about a Mrs. Pack, on Rutledge St, Dallas, who requested the marriage license for FLora and Alonzo. I have recently found that the requestor was Flora Curry Pack McAnally. I do not know why she requested a copy of her own marriage license, but she did.

From the story my grandfather told, Alonzo came to Texas with Roscoe, Arthur, James and possibly a John. I had assumed that they were all grown men when they moved, but looking at all the information here, perhaps they were younger when they moved. I still don't know for sure.

Thanks,
Vic

Moses died March 25,2005 and Elva Aug 27, 2003. I have an obit for Moses but would like one for Elva Jean. They both passed away in Valley Grove, Ohio, WV. His obit was in The Times Leader.
Any help would be appreciated. My condolences go out to any living family members.I am sorry for your loss.
Thank you,
Margrette

Smith Green -> Thomas and Cherokee Blood

Hello, all! I'm Russell Mikel and have just recently stumbled into my Pack ancestors via Mary Melissa Pack (1833-1989) who married Solomon Stansbury. Her parents appear to be Thomas Pack (1805-1870) and Artilissie Hawkins (1805-1838), and Thomas' parents appear to be Smith Green Pack, Sr. (1760-1835) and Elizabeth 'Betsy' Lowery (d.1839). I'm still confirming these dates, etc. (and it IS confusing!), but my real question is about Elizabeth Lowery and the Cherokee question. I've seen trees claiming her parents as the Scotsman George Lowery who seems clearly to have married the Cherokee woman Oo Loo Tsa "Nannie" of the Blue Holly clan. But I've seen other trees that convincingly say that THAT Elizabeth married twice to other men, not to Smith Green Pack. Can anyone help me find out who this Smith Green Pack married? That seems to be the immediate key to unlocking the question of Cherokee blood in my line.

By the way, the results from DNA testing I had done came back with 0% native American blood for me, but I need to go back and see what they mean. If Nannie were my Cherokee ancestor, I would only be 0.4% Cherokee (1/256), so it might not register. Thanks!

Thanks, Janete. I've seen the name Jeremiah in the discussions, but where does he fit in? More recently, it sounds like. Also, there is (naturally) a Smith Green Pack, Jr (brother to Tom). And I have seen other Green Packs (not sure if there are other Smith Green Packs). An odd name to have show up.

I'm afraid I don't have much beyond what I included in my note since I just found the Pack line, but I hope to learn more (and have learned a lot already!). I'll share whatever I have.

By the way, I kept coming across the book Facets of Fannin, and want to confirm that you can order it from the Fannin County Library for $80 + $7.50 shipping. It apparently has a lot of family histories, including info on the Packs. I can't wait to see what it has to say!

John Pack (1824) - Who were his parents?

Looking for the parents of John Pack (b. 1824) who married Sarah Ann Endicott. They had a son James Pack (1866).

I've found 3 possible options:

1) Samuel Pack (1780) and Jane Brown (1785)
2) Charles Pack (~1787) and Elizabeth Crum (~1790)
3) George Pack (1796) and Sarah Lain (1802)

Thanks.
Mark
