> I'd like to know if there is a Packard history starting with the
> immigrant Samuel Packard that is reliable and accurate.

There are not any that I would suggest. For years I have been working on a well-documented account of the early generations. The first two generations are substantially complete. I am in the process of completing the third, and there is a small amount of info on the fourth and fifth. See:

http://plymouthcolony.net/families/packard1.html

Dale H.
> A good portion of my Packard family information came from
> Mitchells's History of Bridgewater

Be wary of Mitchell - there is a great deal of incorrect information there, especially concerning 17th- and 18th-century families. Many of Mitchell's errors concerning early generations of the Packard family are corrected (in red) in the online transcription of his History of bridgewater:

http://plymouthcolony.net/bridgewater/mitchell/264.html#pack...

Dale H.
Thanks for your lookup offer. A good portion of my Packard family information came from Mitchells's History of Bridgewater and other Massachusetts books. I've learned later that some of the information in Mitchell's book isn't totally accurate. My line of descent is from Samuel Packard (md. Elizabeth Lathrop, died about 1698) and his daughter Mary who md. Amos Snell and on down the line to Jacob Hayward, who ended up in Acworth, New Hampshire. So I leave the Packard line fairly early on.

I'd like to know if there is a Packard history starting with the immigrant Samuel Packard that is reliable and accurate.

I've been doing genealogy research for many years but find it difficult to get immersed in early New England research. I know there is much I could do with the early land, probate, etc., records. I just need to get motivated!

Do the newsletters offer any pertinent information relating to my Mary Packard? If not, that's OK!

Thanks.

Joanne
(you may contact me at: jomello@sbcglobal.net)

Joanne: There is no index, per se, to the PAFA newsletters "Packard's Progress." However, I have extracted much data on Packard and allied families and entered it in my computer family file (Reunion 9, Macintosh computer). It has a detailed search capability by name, place, relationship, date, etc. If you will give me an idea of your Packard interests, I may be able to find some pertinent data and leads for you.
Dick Packard
Re: PACKARD family of Goshen, Hampshire, MA

> Sidney Frebun PACKARD (1867-1936)

Goshen records name him Frebun Sidney Packard, born there 24-Aug-1867, son of Frebun W. (b. Goshen) and Hannah T. (b. Millbury) Packard [MAVR 197:65].

Freebun W. Packard (a. 44) and Hannah T. Holman (a. 20, dau. of Rev. Sidney Holman) were married 29-May-1864 at Goshen [MAVR 172:8].

The 31-Jul-1908 Goshen death certificate for Freburn White Packard shows him as aged 88 y. 8 m. 6 d., born at Goshen, son of Horace Packard (b. Goshen) and Sarah White (b. Goshen) [MAVR 44:266].

> Joshua PACKARD ?born 1741 ?
> m. Martha Hartwell

Your line is correct back to this point, and can be established through vital records. Joshua, though, was not the son of Seth and Mercy (Bryant) Packard - that couple did not have a son named Joshua.

Joshua was the son of Samuel and Anne (Leach) Packard, born 10-Aug-1735 at Bridgewater [MD 15:171; Bridgewater VR 1:244]. With his twin brother Caleb he removed first to Pelham and then, about 1770, to Goshen [per Caleb's Rev. War pension file].

Dale H.

> Try starting with Samuel Packard, his wife Elizabeth
> (maybe Stream, maybe not)

Not.

> who settled in the Bridgewater, MA area ca. 1635 and searching
> forward.

The Packards did not arrive until 1638, on the Diligent. They first settled in Hingham, removed to Weymouth 1654, and removed from there to Bridgewater about 1664.

Trying to trace forward from Samuel to a man born in 1867 would almost certainly be an excercise in futility. Samuel and Elizabeth had thirteen children, and five of their sons had children of their own. I know of seventeen grandsons named Packard - there would be so many branches to search that it would be an immense task.

The only suitable plan is to begin with what is known and work backwards.

Dale H.
Richard: Thank you for your detailed information. I've known about my connection with the Packard family for many years, but only recently resumed interest in the family when I hit many brick walls with other families. I've read about the England reunion and the Samual Packard reunion in 1888. I did try to find on internet a current active Packard family association and being unable to find it, decided to post to this board. I'll continue to read this board and other internet postings to keep up to date on the Packard family. Thanks again for your input.

Joanne
Re: Samuel Packard reunions in United States?

There was a Samuel Packard reunion in Brockton, Plymouth Co., Mass. on Aug. 10, 1888, to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the landing of Samuel in this country. A report of this very large gathering is available on Google. A Packard Memorial Assoc. was formed which was active until World War II. I don't know what later reunions it may have held.

There have been a scattering of regional and/or Packard family branch gatherings over the years but I have no specific times and places.

In the spring of 1987, Mrs. Jeri Packard Schlerf began privately publishing "Packard's Progress," a family newsletter for anyone interested in Packard and allied family history, genealogy, and activity. She and interested readers organized a reunion at Eureka Springs, Missouri, to celebrate the 350th anniversary on Aug 10, 1988 of the arrival of Samuel Packard and his wife and one daughter. I attended with my brother and our wives and 100 or more others. The Packard and Allied Families Assoc. (PAFA) was formed, elected officers, and established by-laws. It was an informal organization and was not registered in any state.

PAFA held additional reunions on weekends closest to August 10th:
1990, Plymouth County, Massachusetts
1992, Boxborough, Middlesex Co., Mass.
1994, Warren, Trumbull Co., Ohio
1997, Colorado Springs, Colorado
2000, Plymouth, Plymouth Co., Mass.

In May, 2000, PAFA sponsored a trip to England to visit Samuel Packard's ancestral home, "The Red House," in Stonham Aspal, Suffolk County, England.

The editorship of "Packard's Progress" was taken over by Alan D. Packard in 1991 until the fall of 1994 when Dale Cook became editor. I became editor in 1997 until September of 1999 when I announced my resignation and appealed for a volunteer to continue it. There were a few possible volunteers at the August 2000 reunion but medical problems occurred, no one took over the editorship and newsletter publication ended.

Meanwhile, the popularity of the internet, especially for the exchange of genealogical information, has grown tremendously and supplanted much of the interest in a family newsletter. Without a newsletter the PAFA organization has in effect ceased to exist and no further reunions are being planned.

Richard F. Packard, Sr., Littleton, MA
Re: Floyd Packard and wife Flora

The Floyd Packard you are trying to trace is not the Floyd Packard for whom this message thread is titled.

The autobiography of Floyd Lamonde Packard who was the Morman Mission President of the Florida Tallahassee Mission (“ftm”) from July 1984 to June 1987 is found on pages 394 to 414 in the book compiled and edited by Lowene Packard Saxton "The Packard Legacy, Family History and Genealogy," Saxton Press, Sacramento, Calif.: 1992. Library of Congress No. 92-85331.

Floyd’s autobiography covers his life from his birth in 1929 through his childhood, his marriage in 1951 to Alice Earl, and their family life to the “Floyd Packard Family Reunion” in 1991. Floyd and Alice had 14 children, 13 of whom married, and 50 living grandchildren as of 1991.
In addition to the autobiography, there are five pages of this family’s genealogical data from personal records of Floyd Packard as well as records of his Packard ancestors. At the time of this submittal, 1991, his home address was 4005 Sunnyhill Dr., Carlsbad, CA 92008. I have no more recent information about this family. I do not know if Floyd or Alice are now living or deceased.

I purchased my copy of this book from Lowene Saxton. The first printing was 225 copies. I do not know if more were printed. It has 1070 pages, many biographies and autobiographies of Packards, male and female, family trees, and a complete name index. Many are Mormons but not all.

This book contains information on Samuel Packard, the immigrant ancestor in 1638 from England to the Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts of most of the Packards in the United States. It contains information on Samuel’s English ancestors, not all of which is proven to be accurate.

Dick Packard, Littleton, Mass.
According to the Wilmington, VT, Assistant Town Clerk, Levi Packard's death is recorded in their records as February 5, 1839; He was 84. He is buried in Riverview Cemetery, Old Riverview section H, grave #15. His wife, Martha, died August 27, 1856, at the age of 91. She is also buried in Riverview Cemetery in Wilmington.

I think that the Wilmington vital records, wills and probate records from that time period are available for viewing on microfiche at one of the Mormon's Family history Libraries around the country (Familysearch.org See the library catalog for microfiche number.)

My family records show Levi and Martha Packard's first child was Lydia Rice Packard, born December 1, 1787. She married David F. Jackson and lived in Derby, CT, until her death in 1838.

Calvin G. Packard m. Gertrude Murray, Trumbull County, Ohio

I know the ancestry of Calvin Packard, but I do not know what happened to him. He and Gertrude can be found in the 1860 census of Ottumwa, Wapello County, Iowa, but in 1870, he is gone. Only Gertrude and his three daughters remain. Did he die in the Civil War? I can't get a handle on this. Any insights from other descendants of the Trumbull County Packards would be appreciated. Thanks. Phil Hyatt

John ATCHINSON was b. abt 1788, North Adams, Berkshire, MA, which is not that far from Dummerston, Windham County, VT. He and Lydia COULD have met and married before they went to Chittenden County, VT. I found this in the Gazeteer and business directory for Chittenden, VT for 1882-1883, town of Underhill p. 256 (16):
"John ATCHINSON, sire of the families of that name in this town, was born in North Adams, Mass in 1794 (1788) and removed to Jericho while yet a young man, where he married Lydia PACKARD, and to them was born a family of ten children, eight boys and two girls, five of whom now reside in this town."
I have put together what I believe would be the family of John and Lydia PACKARD ATCHINSON but this is all SUPPOSITION unless you take the Gazeteer for gospel.
Children:
Orrit ATCHINSON b. 2 Apr 1808, m. George METCALF
Zebediah P. ATCHINSON b. abt 1809, m. Elvira LEE
George P. ATCHINSON b. abt 1813, m. Mary A.
Anson B. ATCHINSON b. abt 1814, m. Harriet M.
Buel ATCHINSON b. abt 1818, m. Philena WHITTON
Milton P. ATCHINSON b. abt 1822, m. Cynthia
poss. Isaac N. ATCHINSON
If you add 2 unknown females, you would have the 10 children mentioned in the Gazeteer. Are any of these names found in the family of Josiah and Eunice?

There was also another PACKARD family who went to Jericho, Chittenden, VT in 1792. The name of the sire of this family, was Poli Carpus or P. Carpus PACKARD. He is said to have come from Plainfield, Connecticut. I found no mention of a connection to Lydia Packard ATCHINSON though.

Barb

Can you help with the wife of John Packard (c1656-1741). That her name is Judith and she that she died 19 Jun 1761 ae 90 is validated by her tombstone but was her maiden name Willis or Winslow or are these the same person? Has anyone figured out who her parents were?

Thanks for any help you can provide
To my knowledge the parents of Judith Winslow who married John Packard, Taunton, 1688 have never been discovered, nor proved. It's an intriguing mystery. Of the Winslow men in the colony at the time, there are no recorded Judith's born to any of their marriages, which is not to say there were none. John Winslow, son of Mary Chilton and John Sr. first married Elizabeth then Judith ______. Her maiden name (or married name if she was a widow) is yet to be discovered, and there are no recorded children born to the couple. The most recent Silver (Mayflower) books confirm the above.

So in all, we have a Judith Winslow (unknown) married to John Packard, Son of Samuel the immigrant in Taunton who outlived her husband by some 20 years.

Would love to have new information should it be available.
There is a possiblity they could be the same person as their birthdates are close, especially the 1st of May. Except they were born in different places. I have searched to find anything on these four girls, but not knowing who they married is rather hard. The rest of the family moved to New York, then to Ohio.....some stayed there and some went on to Iowa. Josiah Jr. and his family lived in Appanoose County, Iowa. I would be happy to share info with you. Thank you for replying.

John Packard b. 20 Jul 1655, Weymouth, Plymouth Colony and d. 16 Mar 1741, Bridgewater, Plymouth County. He married in Taunton, Bristol Co., Mass., 12 Apr 1688 Judith Winslow, b. abt 1672 and d.19 Jun 1761 Bridgewater in her 90th year. See
http://plymouthcolony.net/families/packard2.html#72 for sources and additional information.

My files show Judith Winslow's parents as John Winslow and his second wife, Judith Smith. My source was Steadman, Lori; “Descendants of Mayflower Passengers,” America Online; MAYFLO4.GED: 23 Sep 1995 but I don't have it at hand and can't vouch for its accuracy.

What led you to ask if Judith Willis was John's wife?

Note that the Joseph Packard family of the title of this thread were of a later generation of descendants of the immigrants Samuel Packard and his wife Elizabeth. (Maiden name unknown; there is no evidence found that it was Stream.) John Packard, husband of Judith Winslow, was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth.

The following information was collected by Alan D. Packard (now deceased) and published in "Packard's Progress" Vol. 34, p. 15, May 1997. It was in his series which listed families allied to the Packard family through the male line.

Keiser, Elizabeth, born 8 Aug 1830 in Pennsylvania and died 13 March 1897 in Penn. She married Jonathan Packard 24 April 1851 in Pennsylvania. Alan did not report Elizabeth's parents' names. He may have had more information about Jonathan but the allied families series only included the male Packard's name and the marriage date and location. I do not know what his heirs have done with his records.

Hopefully Mr. Cook (Ma. Society of Mayflower) can help me with the last link in my own application to Mayflower Society.
I am a descendant of Keziah Dunbar Russell b.at Grantham NH l814, the wife of Ralph Russell. This couple had 16 children and lived in Washington and Warren Co. New York. Keziah the daughter of Appollos Dunbar and Abigail Packard. Appollos Dunbar was son of John Dunbar, grandson of David Dunbar, Peter, Robert. He was born at Bristol Mass.He had a brother Anzel and a sister Susan Dunbar and a sister Keziah Dunbar who married Samuel Metcalf. I think that Appollos and Abigail Packard named my ggggrandmother Keziah after her aunt Keziah Packard.
Abigail Packard -I believe was born in Bristol Mass in l789 and MAY be the daughter of Luther and Abigail (Thomas) Packard.
Are you familiar with this family?
tennake2@aol.com

On the Web:
http://www.defenselink.mil/releases/release.aspx?releaseid=1...

IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 889-08
October 21, 2008
Airman Missing In Action From WWII Is Identified

The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO) announced today that the remains of a U.S. serviceman, missing in action from World War II, have been identified and will be returned to his family for burial with full military honors.

He is 2nd Lt. Ray D. Packard, U.S. Army Air Forces, of Atwood, Calif. He will be buried on Oct. 22 in Prescott, Ariz.

Representatives from the Army met with Packard’s next-of-kin to explain the recovery and identification process and to coordinate interment with military honors on behalf of the Secretary of the Army.

On Aug. 25, 1944, Packard was a pilot in a flight of 22 P-38 Lightning fighter aircraft that left the allied airfield at St. Lambert, France, to attack enemy airfields near Laon-Chambry, France. Enroute to their target, the fighter group was intercepted by more than 80 German fighters near Beauvais, France. During the ensuing dogfight, 11 P-38s were shot down, including Packard’s which crashed 15 miles south of Beauvais near the town of Angy. Five of the pilots escaped and evaded enemy capture and two were taken as prisoners of war. Of the four men who were missing in action, three were later recovered and identified, but Packard remained unaccounted-for.

In 1951, a U.S. Army Graves Registration Command team investigated the incident and interviewed a French citizen who said he recovered human remains from a P-38 crash site in Angy. The team also interviewed the mayor of Angy who said that the remains had been buried in a local cemetery, but had later been exhumed and he didn’t know what happened after the disinterment. The team went to the crash site, but only found small pieces of aircraft wreckage.

In 2006, a Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) team traveled to Angy to investigate the incident. The team interviewed the son of the French citizen interviewed in 1951. He turned over to the team human remains and other non-biological evidence recovered from the crash site. The team interviewed another French citizen, an aircraft wreckage hunter, who turned over remains and other evidence from an excavation that he conducted at the site.

In 2006 and 2007, JPAC teams conducted two excavations and recovered more human remains, aircraft wreckage, and material evidence including Packard’s identification tag.

Among other forensic identification tools and circumstantial evidence, scientists from JPAC used dental comparisons in the identification of Packard’s remains.

For additional information on the Defense Department’s mission to account for missing Americans, visit the DPMO web site at http://www.dtic.mil/dpmo or call (703) 699-1169.

I'm looking for information about the two Packard families that lived in Ingham County, MI, circa 1850. According to 1850 Federal Census, James Packard (b. ~1818 in NY), wife Malinda Packard (b. 1826 in NY), and 3 children, as well as William (elsewhere given as Willard) Packard (b ~1823 in NY), wife Abagail (b~1823 in NY), and 3 children all born in MI. There's no sign of James or William/Willard in the 1860 census, and William's wife Abagail had moved to Livonia, MI with their children.

I'm especially looking for William/Willard, though it would be helpful to know if there were familial ties between James and William.... brothers?

Thanks for any pointers,
Glenn

I am familiar with this family, but this Abigail married and died at Cummington.

Abigail, daughter of Luther and Abigail (Thomas) Packard, was born 02-Mar-1788 at Abington [Abington VR 1:157]. This family apparently moved to western MA some time after 1793 (Mitchell's "History of Bridgewater" says only that the family "went westward"). The family must first have lived in Plainfield, where Luther apparently died, as the 1800 census there listed the family as "Luther Packard heirs" [NARA M32:15:886]. Abigail and the children moved to Cummington within the next few years and are found in Cummington in the census beginning in 1810. Widow Abigail died at Cummington 04-Mar-1834 [Cummington VR 214]. Daughter Abigail married Daniel Hersey at Cummington 05-Mar-1807 [Cummington VR 123], and died there 23-Oct-1824 (town and private records) or 23-Oct-1826 (gravestone), aged 36 (gravestone) or 37 (private record) [Cummington VR 198].

Dale H.
Nathaniel Packard Did Not Marry A Daughter Of John Kingman

It has come to my attention that there is some confusion concerning the wife of Nathaniel Packard, son of immigrants Samuel and Elizabeth (___) Packard. This confusion stems from an erroneous speculation published more than a century and a half ago.

In 1840, in his "History of the Early Settlement of Bridgewater ...", Nahum Mitchell wrote of Nathaniel that he "m., probably, a D. of John Kingman." This speculation was later repeated as fact by a number of authors, including Bradford Kingman, "History of North Bridgewater" (1866) and "Descendants of Henry Kingman" (1921); and Theo Packard, "Genealogies of Samuel Packard of Bridgewater" (1871). It has also been reported as fact on countless sites online. Note that none of those sites can cite contemporary records to support that false assumption.

The 13-Mar-1690/91 settlement of the estate of John Kingman mentions, without naming them, three daughters [MD 30:184-186]. We know from other contemporary records that the three were:

1) Elizabeth, who married Thomas Mitchell 01-Jan-1695/96 at Bridgewater [MD 3:9; BridgewaterVR 2:222, 257].

2) Deliverance, who married Jacob Mitchell, brother of Thomas, that same day in a double ceremony with her sister.

3) Susanna, who married Chilton Latham 06-Dec-1699 at Bridgewater [MD 2:146; BridgewaterVR 2:224, 227].

Thus the three daughters of John Kingman who survived to adulthood are accounted for, and none of them married Nathaniel Packard.

Nathaniel married Lydia Smith, daughter of John Smith of Taunton by his first wife, Lydia Eliot. The proofs of this were published by Lucy Hall Greenlaw in a note entitled "Packard-Smith," (NEHGR, 59 [1905]:107-108). They are:

1) A 21-Jan-1695/96 receipt in the papers of Thomas Leonard, executor of the estate of John Smith of Taunton, signed by mark by Nathaniel at Taunton, for cooking implements due to Nathaniel's (unnamed) wife from Smith's estate.

2) A 09-Mar-1702 deed from John Smith of Taunton, son of John Smith, late of Taunton, to Nathaniel and Lydia Packard of Bridgewater, heirs to the estate of John Smith, "father of said Lydia," for a partial share in Taunton North Purchase which originally belonged to said John Smith, deceased [Bristol Co. Deeds, 4:142].

It should be noted that John Smith, Lydia's father, married as his second wife Jael Packard, Nathaniel's sister (and elder by about ten years).

Dale H.
