Researching: Petnice, Peknice, Peknitz
Here is some general info about this family:
Joseph PETNICE, was born in Austria-Hungary in 1818. His wife Mary (born 1821, maiden name unknown) was also born there. Their Reise-Pass, dated 7 December 1867, for travel to St. Louis, shows the town, Horazdovic (Horazdovice, Czech Republic), and the office, Keesniurad,on the Royal Seal of Emperor Franz Joseph I. Seven children are also listed on the Reise-Pass: Charles, Frank, Joe, Billy, Annie, Bell, and Mollie. Their first names are hand-written in what appears to be English rather than German or Bohemian - Joseph not Josef, Mary not Maria, William rather than Wilhem, etc. In the then Austria-Hungary, the printed portions of the papers are all in German, so I would have expected German-equivalent names. The handwritten surname appears to be "Peknitz", evidently a Bohemian surname as interpreted by someone who speaks German.
I do not have their passport papers, the information above is from someone who had a copy.
Researching on-line I found http://www.jewishgen.org/AustriaCzech/hugogold/hugobohlist.h... Horazdovic to have been a Jewish community. Further research on http://www.jewishgen.org/ shows that many of these communities were small, so perhaps not totally impossible to get information.
The last name evolved: Charles (son of Joseph) was found in the 1880 Federal census for Carroll County, Mississippi with the last name now spelled PACKNETS and his family. Charles and son John (named now spelled PACKNITT) were at Eagletown, McCurtain County, OK in 1897 when John was married to Belle PINKARD. The 1910 McCurtain County census shows Charles and his wife Sarah along with John and Belle and their five children, including son, William S. PACKNETT. Charles (last name now spelled PACKNETT).
Hope this helps!
