Tanya,

I am not sure if this would be of any help at all. I am looking for information about my grandfather's family. My grandfather's father was Peter, and his last name may have been either Paff, Shultz, or Setlak. According to my grandmother, he may have changed his last name when he remarried in order ot match the step-children's last name. I am not clear on this at all, but thought if you found any evidence to this fact, we may have something in common...

Thank you,

Peter J. Setlak

Paff family from Rome/Camden, NY?

My name is Peter Joseph Setlak, grandson of Peter and Irene Setlak (both deceased) from Harrisburg, PA.

Just prior to my grandmother's passing, she began to tell me about my grandfather's family - from what she could remember and when she was able to speak. That was a few years back, and I do not recall everything she spoke of but I have the gist of it. I would like to get the facts straight - to be able to trace my grandfather's family line so I can put together a tree for my daughter.

According to my grandmother, either my grandfather's father or his grandfather remarried and changed his name. He was either a Paff, a Shultz, or a Setlak - but I am not sure.

I remember that when my grandfather died, an Andy and Jennie Paff/Shultz attended my grandfather's funeral at Indian Town Gap, Pennsylvania.

I also remember and have pictures of a visit from or to his cousins in about August 1988(yr?). There was a Lynn and Julia, and two other women there. I do not recall if the visit was in Harrisburg or at a diner in Reading.

My grandmother also gave me addresses and names to Paff family members from the Rome/Camden, NY area - all of which I believe have also passed away. Among these addresses was a Peter & Anne Gadziola of Utica, NY who may be Lynn's parents.

If you have any information about my grandfather and his parents, I would like to speak to you.

Thank you,

Peter J. Setlak

Emma Paff m. Iden Monroe Hittle Sr

Emma and Iden were my grandparents. I am a son of their youngest son. I'm 40 years younger than my father and he was close to being that much younger than grandpa.

So, I never met my grandparents.

Emma passed away in 1949 and is buried in Salem Cemetery, about 4-5 miles north of Hebron, Indiana. b. March 28, 1878; d. February 24, 1949; m. Iden Hittle September 30, 1893, Berrien County, Michigan

Her father appears to be Jacob Paff. b. June 13, 1840; d. September 26, 1901; m. Margaret K/Cramer July 9, 1866, Lacrosse County, Wisconsin. Jacob is buried in Berrien County, Michigan.

Her grandfather appears to be Heinrich Paff, grandmother Elizabeth Hikelsberger. These 2 probably lived and died in or near Orbis, Bavaria.

I never met my grandmother. I also have never knowingly met any of my Paff (or other surnamed) cousins. My understanding is that Emma did have siblings.

I wouldn't mind having the opportunity to put that void into the "filled column" of my life. If you are, or know of anyone who would be interested in meeting lost cousins, please let me know!

Joe Hittle
skadj@yahoo.com
www.hittle.info

I have seen many of your postings. I haven't done alot of that yet. Now that I know more about both surnames, I may find more connections. I have printed out what you have listed for names and will do more checking to see if anything matches. My grandmother's name was Ethel Anna Buchner, married James Francis Hurlburt Kripps. There is some confusion about James true name. Ethel and James were both born around 1915. If you are still 'online' please email me at lil1_4him@yahoo.com.

I have no real help but maybe can add a little data for your search. My maternal grandfather was James Paff. He lived on Beech St. in Scranton and was a coalminer. He had a brother Mike. My grandfather died in the late 1920s before I was born. His wife was Mary, and they had four children, Regina, Edmund, Veronica and Alice. Veronica, my mother, died just short of 99 years of age, in 2002.

Darlene- in regards to your posting, I'm working on my family history and this is what I've come up with so far, please continue to read: My maternal grandmother is/was Normal L. Weins, her father was Frank Weins d.o.b. 10/14/1876, dec. 04/17/1953, buried Forest Hill Cemetery. Franks wife was Anna Fox d.o.b. 01/16/1884, dec. 12/27/1935, buried same cemetery. I have a copy of Anna's death certificate, with Peter Fox as father and born in Germany and Mary Paff as mother and born in Pa.. Therefore, Frank and Anna are my great maternal grandparents, thus, making Peter Fox and Mary PAFF my gg-grandparents. I am willing to share what info I do have. Anyone with the same family line, feel free to e-mail me at vwilber38@aol.com

Hi Jackie, I haven't spent much time on this line in awhile I don't have much on the Paffs, all I know is Jacob Paff and his wife Mary ? were born in Germany both her and and her dau. Josephine Paff Williams are buried in Forest Hill Cem. in Dunmore (Scranton area) I don't know what happened to Jacob or where he is buried. I did find a Mary and Jacob listed in an 1870 Eastern Pa. Census #286 but I haven't been any place to check that out unless you have any info on that? The info I mainly got came from a old family bible 1850's or 60's It said Josephine was born in Calicoon and the family was from Wayne Co. Mary was born 1820 or 21 I think and died 3/19/ 1900. Do you have any more info on the Paffs? I don't know how to do alot of things with the computer just basicly research. Get back with me when you get a chance. Thanks Darlene

I was recently looking over some material on the Hughes and ran across William and Mary(Hughes)Paff in the will of Matthew Hughes b. 1733/34 and d. Nov 27, 1810 in Plumstead Twn, Bucks County, Pa. Mary was his daughter. William Paff paid taxes in Plumstead from 1850 until 1863 as a tenant on the land of a William Leach. He is listed as a carpenter. He and Mary had moved to Indianapolis, IN at the time the will was propated. They elected to have the property sold. My interest is in Matthew's grandchild Hugh Hughes who he raised(son of his daughter Jane). Hugh married Rachel Paff who may be William's sister.
Any information you can add much appreciated.

William P. Paff

Born in 1826 in New York. His parents were both of German heritage. After spending many years in the merchant marines, he moved westward (Sedalia, MO) in 1867. There he became Sheriff, and later died (1883). He was a very wealthy man for his time. Was is a self-made wealth? Who were his parents? Frederick Paff was in New York about the time of his birth (1830), but is gone in 1840 (William's parents took him back to Germany when he was 14). Any ideas?

Don, Thanks for the reply, I've come across a few John's there is a John located at 152 S.Garfield Ave. in 1890 and a Joh at 1016 Stone Ave. in 1890 and there is a Mary Paff widow of John in 1890 at 426 Franklin Ave. Then John is at 152 S. Garfield in 18912 Also Mary is now at 428 Franklin Ave. in 1892 Also there is a George Paff that boards at that same address with Mary listed as a driver. What the relationship is I don't know. There is also other Paff's on these directories. And some buried at Forest Hill Cem. in Scranton (Dunmore). There is a John W. Paff 5yr. 5mo. 7da. born Scranton died 7/4/1889 of scarlet fever m. maybe this is a child of your John??? My relation is Jacob Paff and wife Mary ? both born Ger. she is buried in Forest Hill but I don't know where he is buried yet. she was b. 1820-1 she d. 3/19/1900 It said in family bible that was started about 1850-65 that the mothers side was from Wayne Co. Pa. I haven't had much luck finding anything there. unless its under Mary's maiden name which I don't know yet. They had a dau. Josephine born in Calicoon which is just over the state line from Wayne co. into NY. she was born abt. 1857-61 d. 1/6/1938 she married John T. Williams, I don't know much on him either only some bro. names he was in Philly in and around 1900 because he had to give permission for a baby to be buried in the cem. lot so I don't know why he was there, there is a John T. Williams buried at Forest Hill 58-60yr. died 8/28/1893 born Wales but I don't think this the right one but maybe his father?? Do you know any bro or sis. of John or abt the time of births etc. the name Darbyshire seems like I've come across it before but I don't seem to find anything on it yet.
