Re: Smith Paine

Hi,

A friend just alerted me that you had responded to my old inquiry regarding Smith Wilbur Paine. Since making that inquiry I know a great deal more thanks to George Paine of Sun City, Arizona. I presume that some of your information has come from him or his book because he has unearthed an indredible amount of family history and you seem to be familiar with it.

Smith Paine was my great grandfather. By now you probably know that when Smith Paine left Rhode Island he left behind his family, a wife and one child, George Remington Paine,my grandfather. He was presumed to have gone to Missouri and was never heard from again. No one knew about the second family until George visited some of my relatives in the 1960s and introduced himself as a descendent from the second family. I had tried to find George since I was the one interested in the genealogy but he only had my name and finally contacted me when he finished his book. It was incredibly exciting to get the complete story after many years of dead ends and searching.

The wife he left behind, Mahala Remington Paine, later married a Griffin Lewis and spent her last days with her only son, my grandfather, and his wife on their farm in Maine.

My father settled in Massachusetts and George and his wife followed him and lived out their lives in Massachusetts.

It is an interesting family story and you are clearly a descendent the same as I am.

Feel free to email me at prufish@comcast.net. I live in Gloucester, MA.

Prudence Fish

Jonathan Paine (1690-1730) of Hunterdon, New Jersey married to Susannah HORSEMAN

I am trying to locate the parents and family of Jonathan Paine born 1690 in Hunterdon, New Jersey. Most family trees show his parents as John Pain and Abagail Curtis, but this cannot be correct. Jonathan was born in 1690 and John and Abagail were married in 1699. Also, it is documented that John and Abagail had only one child after their short marriage and then John died. Furthermore, John is said to have been born around 1683 which would mean he fathered Jonathan at the age of seven!!!
So who could be Jonathan's parents? What other Paine families in Hunterdon, New Jersey?
As for Jonathan Paine and Susannah HORSEMAN's children, I have Jonathan, Sanuel and Elizabeth Payne (they changed the spelling from Paine to Payne).
Help please.

William Paine, Bordentown NJ

I'm searching for any connections to this ancestor. Updated information on Capt. William Paine - he was born in Feb. 1821 at Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England, and is believed to have come to the U.S. about 1841. He lived mainly in the Bordentown, Burlington NJ vicinity but was in PA for a time around 1900. His two known marriages were to Hester Ann Schuyler; they had a daughter, Anna; and Elizabeth Mathews, about 1856; they had a son, William Vivalda Paine. Capt. William was a steamboat captain on the Delaware River and on Chesapeake Bay. He died 28 Sep 1902 at the Masonic Home in Bordentown and was buried about 2 Oct 1902. William Vivalda married Sarah White; one of their sons is my grandfather, Charles Norris Paine, 1888-1955. We have a connection with Ristines - various spellings - beginning with Jacob Ristine (first identified ancestor), who was born in Hammelbach, Germany, 4 May 1775. He was brought to this country as an infant and married Hannah/Hanan Super of West Philadelphia, around 1804/5.

If you go to the DAR website, look for the Membership contact, and ask for a "Look-UP" for Robert Paine in the Patriot records, he might be found there. It would also give where he was from and the name of his wife. That could help you with proof.

I have a Paine that I cannot find any other evidence for of who the parents were. My John Paine was born in Maryland in 1775/1780. I feel that it is possible that his father was in the Revolutionary War, but I also have no proof of that nor whom his father or mother were.
Jan

Dear RonHoover62,

Yes, there is a connection. Richard Treat had 10 children, one of whom was Catherine. Another of his children was his son Robert Treat, born 1624, who was also a Governor of Connecticutt. Robert Treat had eight children. One of his sons was Samuel Treat, born 1648 and who helped found the town of Newark, NJ. He had 13 children, one of whom was Eunice Treat, born 9-27-1704. She married Rev. Thomas Paine and had 6 children, one of whom was Richard Treat Paine, the signer of the declaration of Independence. So I guess Catherine would have been a Great, Great Aunt to Robert Treat Paine. My ancestors come from another of Robert Treats sons, Joseph Treat. If you need any more info, I have plenty, even further back than Richard and Alice.

George Payne/Pain/Paine; "Mariner" Chatham MA., from ME?

I am looking for the parents of George Payne, "Mariner", died 03 Jul 1829 age 40 and 6 months, buried in the East Harwich Methodist Church Cemetery, Harwich, MA. Family tradition has his father's name as John.

George married: Sally Buck, b. May 1792, d. 26 Jun 1886, daughter of Joshua and Tabitha (Phillips) Buck (Sally m.2 (Captain) Joshua Crowell 1849.

George and Sally's children
1) (Captain) John Payne b. 1821 m. Reliance Harding b. 1828, both lost at sea 1864.
2) Sally (Sarah) Payne b. 1823 d. 15 Oct 1924 m. in 1844 Ziba Nickerson 1823-1912.
3) Mary Ann Payne b.21 Feb 1829 d.23 Apr 1893 m.25 Nov 1847 to (Captain) Ira K Buck b.1827 who died at sea of Yellow Fever in May 1969.
4) Eliza Ann Payne b.1830 m. 09 Feb 1847 to Joseph Harding b.1822
5) & 6)George(1) and George(2) both died in childhood.

I can not find any George Payne/Paine/Pain born in 1789. A Buck family history (Byron Buck) says he was born in Maine.

George appears on the 1820 census in Chatham Massachusetts, living next to the Bucks and a John Paine. He bought land from Joseph and Patty Loveland, deed recorded Chatham 11 May 1817, and from Joshua & Tabitha Buck, deed record Chatham 15 Dec 1824.

I can't find John Paine on the 1830 census in Chatham, George has died, and Sally Paine is head of household. I believe that the 1820 John Paine in Chatham is a different John Paine than the one who died in Harwich in 1831.

There is a John Paine, father of Mary Paine, who is the wife of Amasa Nickerson of Harwich. This John Paine may be 2 different John Paines since there are two different wives given depending on the reference - Elizabeth Taylor (from Nickerson Family Association), or Elizabeth Lord, dr. Rev Joseph Lord of Chatham (from "The History of Cape Cod by Frederick Freeman, 1862 )But I can't find anything more here either.

If my John Paine is associated with Joseph Lord, his son George could have been born in SC, GA, or NC as well as ME.

I'm out of places to search, and hope that someone has some family traditions that will provide clues.

Can anyone help me with my George Payne/Paine/Pain?

Thank you

Karen

Ezekiel Paine

Dear Paine researchers,

I'm trying to find out the Paine family to which my ancestor Ezekiel Paine belonged. His daughter, Abigail, and her husband, Abraham Bull, lived in New York and are both buried in the Riverside Cemetery in Pulaski. I have seen Abigail listed as the daughter of Ezekiel Paine and Ruth Seeley; however, I have also seen her listed as the daughter of Ezekiel Paine and his first wife (Ruth Seeley being his second.) Does anyone know if this particular Ezekiel Paine is the son of John Paine and Martha Smith, and if so, has anyone heard about him having a first wife? Thanks very much!

Kate

Flavious B. Paine, son of Joseph & Eliza Ann Paine, b.1854 Fitchburg, WI

From the "History of Dane County, Wisconsin-1906", here is the biographical sketch for Flavious B. Paine, a prominent farmer of the town of Rutland, is a native of Dane County. His parents, Joseph S. and Eliza Ann (Butterfield) Paine, were born in Buxton, Maine, where they spent their youth and early married life. Joseph Paine was by trade a tanner and active in the affairs of the community where he resided. At one time sheriff, he held many local offices during his life. In 1844, he located in the town of Fitchburg and obtained eighty acres of wild land which he afterward exchanged for an eighty-acre farm of prairie land. One of the pioneers of Fitchburg, he belonged to the Masonic Lodge when first established and was prominent in the community. Mrs. Joseph Paine was an energetic worker in the Methodist Episcopal church. After Mr. Paine's death in 1857, she lived with her children until 1893, when she died at the advanced age of eighty-four years. Eleven children blessed the marriage, of whom five are living; Eliza. Charles A. and Ellen reside in Oklahoma; Joseph S. lives in Madison and Flavins in Rutland. Flavins B. was born in Fitchburg, March 7, 1854, educated in the district school and early began to earn his own way. His sisters, Eliza A. and Ellen, attended the University of Wisconsin and became school-teachers, but Flavius went to work at farming when he was but seventeen years old. When he was twenty-one he went to Leadville, Col., where he worked in the mines and drove a stage. In the autumn of 1878 he drove a team from Fitchburg to Knoxville, Tennessee and soon after took up a claim near Frederick, S. Dak. Returning to Fitchburg in 1886, he rented the old homestead and in 1893 he purchased it. He also owned one hundred and thirty acres in the town of Oregon, which he improved and sold at a handsome profit. In 1904 he bought eighty acres in the town of Rutland which is the present homestead and built a fine barn and handsome dwelling. November 24, 1897, Mr. Paine married Miss Edna E. West, daughter of Henry and Phoebe Ann (Burch) West of Madison. Three children were, born to them; Flavius, in 1899; Blanche, in 1900, and Edna in 1901. Mr.Paine is a Democrat and takes an active interest in local affairs. He was elected supervisor in Oregon and assessor and treasurer in Fitchburg.
Robert Paine, Revolutionary War

His wife was Rachel Lord, and he was born about 1745 in VA and died in NC. According to some sources, he was in the Revolutionary war. However, I cannot find hard evidence of this. Does anyone have any info on this? Or does anyone have any experience with finding Revolutionary war proof to join DAR?

If he lived in VA during the war, and probably joined there, but died in NC, where should I look for a pension or other record of service? National Archives, NC Archives, etc? Very frustrated with my search! Thanks in advance.

Elizabeth Arabella PAINE, born c 1836 Holborn or Bloomsbury London England

Desperately seeking Elizabeth Arabella Paine, daughter of William John Paine (a tailor). She married Jonathan Spall in Holborn, London in 1863. I think I have found the family in the Whitefriars Precinct in London in 1841, but cannot find an 1851 entry. In the later censuses she says she was born either in Holborn or Bloomsbury. I have searched all the indexes and films I can lay my hands on, but the St George Bloomsbury parish registers are available only at the London Metropolitan Archives.

Can anyone help?

Sue

Hello Ed. This is Forrest Paine. It's been a while since we last communicated. I have been plagued with computer problems since the middle of December '07. Getting tiresome.
Anyway, I was trying to enter what you sent to me via ancestry.com:
Thomas Paine - Mary Snow (8th)
Thomas Paine - Hannah Shaw (7th)
Joshua Paine (6th) - (I show wife to be Constance Paine, b. 17 Feb 1704/05 in Canterbury Colony of Connecticut, daughter of Elisha Paine & Rebecca Doane)
William Bentley - Phoebe Paine (5th)(1735 and 1746 births)
David Bentley - Lydia Button (4th) (1828 & 1826 births) (This would make David and Lydia 93 and 80 years old respectively when William was born.) ( It would seem that at least one generation is missing.)
(Those are the last dates in your string of ancestors, so we need to resolve this discrepancy before proceeding any further.)

Forrest.
I too am a descendant of Robert Treat Paine. I have the ancestral background and our family orginally came from Sommerset, England. If I can be of any help, just contact me through my email.

I am a descendant of Robert Treat Paine on my paternal side. My name is Patricia Boggs and I live in Texas City, TX. I do have quite a bit of the ancestry of the Treat family.
