Paino from Stromboli

My grandfather Vincenzo Paino was born on Stromboli (Aeolian Islands) in 1880 and, after working with his brothers in New York for several years, emigrated to Australia in 1922.

One of his brothers, Antonino Paino, chose to remain in the US and lost touch with his siblings in Australia. I have put up a small family web site which lists some of the US addresses where the brothers lived. I would love to make contact with the US descendants of Antonino. The web site is at www.paino-family.com.

Hi, Angelo,

I don't know whether we are researching the same Paino's but my grandfather, James (Giacomo), came from Malfa, Salina to the USA at the turn of the century when he was thirteen. I believe he joined an older brother in NY; he had quite a few siblings at home in Malfa. If you think this might be the same as your Paino's, please reply.

Lorie

Hi Fran,
Well, I believe we must be related somehow. My gr grandmother Paino was from Malfa. There are 3 Islands just north of Sicily: Vulcano, Salina and Lipari. My gr grandparents came from the village of Malfa on Salina. Your gr grandparents came from Lipari...I wouldn't think these are highly populated areas. It is my understanding that even today the only way to visit Salina is a long boat ride. However it is beautiful from pictures I have seen. Here is a link to the map so you can see how close our folks were to each other:
http://www.google.com/maps?q=Lipari+(Sicilia),+Italy&sa=...

Which of your Paino relatives came to America? I know I saw a Bartolo Paino in either the census or city directories, or maybe both. I think there were some who settled in Waltham, MA.

You can email me directly: lhaynes9722@yahoo.com
if you prefer.
Lisa

Hi Lisa,

I do have more specifics about my grandfather. His parents are not the same as the ones you mention. Here is what I have:
My GREAT grandmother was D'Alia
Grazia and GREAT grandfather was Paino Bartolo.
My grandfather, Angelo Paino, was born in Feb 15, 1887.
He comes from Lipari, Messina Italy. This is a town in the very northern end of Sicily.

I hope this information helps.
Fran

Hi Fran,
My Painos were from Malfa, a village on the isle of Salina. Your Nunziata, Caterina and Mariarosa may or many not be my family. I found my gr grandmother's obituary and it only listed surviving (Dec. 1962) siblings Caterina (Paino) Costantino of Massachusetts, and another sister Maria (Paino) Bongiorno in Argentina; and also her half brother, Joseph DeLorenzo...who also lived in Massachusetts. Do you have any further info on your grandfather and his siblings? Was his family from the Aeolian Islands north of Sicily? Paino is really not a very common name...
My gr grandmother Annunziata (Nancy) was born in 1880 in Malfa. Other than all this, I only know her parents were Onofrio Paino and Annunziata DeLorenzo. I have been in touch with 2 daughters of Joe DeLorenzo, and it is still kind of a mystery as to the exact relation and who his father actually was.
Anyhow...all these names being rather common Italian first names...the family I am referring to and the family you are referring to may be the same, or may not, but they are probably at least related somehow because, again, I don't think Paino was common at all.
This is very interesting! I'd like to know more...
Lisa

My grandfather came from Sicily to New York (Brooklyn). He later moved to Dobbs Ferry, New York. My father was born in 1908, so I estimate that my grandfather was born around 1880.

Maria Paino married ??? Bongiorno; left Malfa for Argentina

Angelo, are you out there??? I tried to email you recently.
Wondering if the above sounds familiar. A "Mrs. Maria Bongiorno of Buenes Aires" is listed as my gr grandmother's sister in her obituary, which I recently came across. Then her sister Caterina is listed who I knew of...she married a Costantino and they lived in the Boston area. The obituary lists a brother, Joseph DiLorenzo...which I can't figure out. How can a Paino have a brother DiLorenzo??? But I knew we were related to him somehow. My gr grandmother's mother was Annunziata DiLorenzo...so apparently Joseph was from another man and they were 1/2 siblings???
Who knows...
And then there are the mysterious Onofrios. Looking over a passenger list I found for Onofrio Paino, age 32, arriving in Boston in 1914, he gives the person here who he is going to as "brother in law, Russo, Angelo; 26 Otis St., Wakefield, Mass"; and he gives his closest relation in Italy as "mother, Nunziata of Malfa". Now, in 1915 Wakefield Directory, I find Angelo at that address and I am very sure it is my Angelo Russo.
So, this proves to me that my gr grandmother had a brother Onofrio Paino...why he is not listed in her obituary I do not know; perhaps he was deceased by then (Dec 1962). He would have been about 80 by then.
I do not find an Onofrio Paino in any Mass. City Directories...so he didn't stick around, I guess.
Is it possible that he is your Onofrio Paino? This is not a common name! What would be the American name for Ononfrio???
In 1913 there is a Domenico Paino listed in the Wakefield Directory. His business is fruit and confection.
In 1915, 1916 & 1917 Wakefield Directory, there are 3 Painos listed: Antonio, Domenico and Felix; all living on Albion St.
I am hoping to hear from you and see if you have made your trip to Malfa and have made any progress in the Paino family tree!
Lisa
Paino from Sicily to Massachusetts

My G-Grandmother was Annunziata Paino, married Angelo Russo (from Malfa Messina) in 1906 in Boston, Ma. Here they called her Nancy, Nenzi or Nunzia. Her parents were Onofrio Paino and Annunziata DiLorenzo. I believe she had a sister here named Catterina Paino. That name is listed as a witness on their marriage certificate. I am interested in any info about my G-Grandmother's siblings or her parents siblings. I'm not sure if her parents ever came to USA. They lived in Wakefield/Stoneham, Ma area. Nancy and Angelo Russo had 6 kids: My G-mother, Ann Elizabeth, Joseph, Larry, Nancy, Mary and Ida. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
