Hi - I'm glad to hear from you. I know Elizabeth and Ellwood (or did he go by Spencer?) had three children, Ellwood Jr., Patricia, and Judith. Which one of these is your parent? I'd like to get dates and children for this line. If you are interested in the Usinger line, I have a lot of genealogy for this family back to the 1700's. I'm happy to share...please email me at grubej@earthlink.net.

Jan

Would like to these two pictures with a descendant of Saloma's since Fanny and William did not have any children and I cannot locate Fanny (nee Hunter) Friend's relatives we would like to place the photos with someone in the Saloma Paisley line.

Gwynn
Lost Treasures Committee Chair
San Diego Genealogical Society

Hi Noreen,

I have seen this family before, but it is a different family altogether. Not to say that they are not connected in some way, but they are different families. Our James Paisley married Mary Barnett Gibson in Ireland and the couple had their first four children before coming to Canada about 1842.

Thanks for your interest,

Jack

This Paisley was from North Carolina.
I have a tree on Ancestory.com. The tree name is "Buck, Paisley, Patton, Gibson, Boyle, Macfarland Tree"

The cencus of 1891 in Canada he states Father birth place, Scotland Mother, Ireland. He continually states Scotch as tribe on various documents.
Ann Stewart e-mail: annstewart@wildblue.net

No this does not muddy anything. James Paisley is my 3rd great grandfather, and any record I have seen indicates he was born in Ireland about 1800. I would be happy to receive any evidence to the contrary. I would also be very happy to share any data I have with you as regards this family.

Please feel free to contact me at
jbee18 AT shaw DOT ca

Regards,

Jack

Unknown Paisley birth father to my Grandfather

My grandfather, the late Robert Lee Barker (1932-1976) was devastated to learn at a late age that his father was not really his father. My great grandmother never told him (or otherwise the remaining family doesn't recall) the man's first name, just that he was really a Paisley and not a Barker.

This caused some trouble in his life, and in turn it caused trouble in my Dad's life, because he himself didn't learn of this "family secret" until his father, my grandfather had died from leukemia in 1976.

My grandmother has been in a home due to the effects of dementia so there is no one left to ask. Both my great grandparents (grandmother and adopted grandfather) have passed away. No one even recalls what my great grandmother's given name was because she died before my Dad, aunt and uncles were old enough to really know her and my adopted great grandfather remarried much later on in life.

I'm trying to find any information I can on a Paisley male that may have had a wife in North Carolina in the 1930's (most likely Ashe County) and who may or may not have known about his son born there.

It is unclear also at this point whether or not my grandfather was legally adopted or if they just gave him the Barker family name after their marriage.

I've got nothing much to work with at this time, my grandfather died before I was born and my grandmother didn't like talking about it when she was in good health because it was "scandalous." I can't continue searching into my past unless I can figure out who my great grandfather really is.

Sarah

I have recently unearthed a photograph of Rose Emily Moody who was the wife of William James Paisley and mother of Rose, Constance etc, if you are interested, happy to send.

Do you have any photos of William James Paisley ? I could write back to Roy and ask him. Of all my great-grandparents, this is the only missing photo.

Roy provided me with info on the Paisley's going back to Selkirk in the borders - come to think of it I'm sure he mentioned that the source of most of that information was from the Biddescombe's - just dug his letter out - he mentions Peter and Roy (in America ?).

Regards

Colin

I'm looking for some information on a unknown girl of the Paisley family who married Bernard Mooney. The Paisley family lived in Hazleton, Luzerne Co. PA and I belived that Bernard Mooney also lived in or around the same area. They would have been born around 1873. The only link I have is according to the 1900 census a sister-in-law, Frances Paisley, was living with Bernard Mooney. The girls' father would have been Wm. Joseph Paisley.

Hello

We are both the descendant's of William. My grandmother was Constance Irene Paisley, Rose's sister, and daughter of William. I'd like to find out what happened also. (Great-Uncle) Roy Paisley provided me with some family background, but William's disappearance is a mystery. On Ellisislandrecords.com there is information found on a William (J) Paisley sailing in and out of the US until 1923, of the right age, but I've no corroborating evidence to suggest this is the same person.

I do remember Rose - as a youngster I always remember how alike Nan (Constance) and Rose were.

Regards

Colin Coombs

My great grandfather William James Paisley born 1880 in Freemantle, Hampshire Uk walked out of his house in 1921 supposedly to join a ship in lIverpool he was meant to be working on, and never was heard of again. He left my grandmother Rose Ethel Biddiscombe and 3 siblings and his wife Rose Emily Paisley without any clue to where he had gone. Does anyone have any info that might shed light on this mystery/. Thank you

Hi, I know you posted this 6 months ago but hopefully you are still interested in info about Rose Paisley. She is my husbands grandmother. She was born Rose Ethel M Paisley in Southampton in 1907 and had 3 siblings Constance (1911)Gladys and Roy. Sadly only Roy is still alive and lives in Southampton still. Me and hubby and family now live in New Zealand, but still see my husbands family a lot, as they travel out here all the time. Rose married Edward George Biddiscombe and had 2 boys. Roy 1930 who now lives in America and Peter my father in law. Peter had 2 boys the oldest of which is my husband, we have 3 children, the oldest of which is Rose after her ggrandmother who she met many times whilst a toddler. Could I ask your connection to Rose and family please.

Colin,
Thanks for the message, I too found the shipping records and those to Bermuda too and concluded that it must be the same William James Paisley that we are after tracing. No other William J Paisleys were born in the same year or had anything to do with ships. Would love to know what happened after 1923, so definately more research needed. I don't get to spend much time on family history as I have 3 school age kids to look after and run around after, but love it, when I get a chance.
My daughter who is now 10 is called Rose after her ggrandmother who she got to meet quite a few times up until her death a few years ago.
I have done a bit of research into the Paisleys, and if ever you would like to share or find out anything more, would love to help. We live in New Zealand now, so personal research a little tricky, but most can be done online these days.
Thanks again for getting in touch
Kind regards
Sarah Biddiscombe

Re: Robert Paisley

Robert Paisley b. 1758, Antrim Co. Ireland. Son of unknown Paisley. Family supposedly of Scot descent. Scots were sent over to Ireland in a plantation, "to settle-down the Irish." The Scots remained Scots, didn't mix with Irish. They were errorousnly called Scots-Irish, but never were Irish. Robert emigrated to USA, with two brothers, Hugh & John. It was reported, and documented in Penn. Archives, that Robert, Hugh & John all fought in the American Revolutionary War. John settled in Philadelphia, Penn. Hugh settled in Ohio. (I have records on these brothers.) Hugh's War Record found in 5th Series, Penn. Archives; Vol. 4 & 5 list John & Robert, with no further info. Robert died, Pa., c1850, past 92 years old. Occupation: farmer. Married c1795; Ann/Amanda, five known children: Ann, Ellen, Andrew,John, & Robert John. I have around 18 pages on this family, descendants of Robert. I could copy and send you if you desire; please send your snail mail address. You could send your snail mail address by e-mail if you don't want to list in this Rootsweb. Would be glad to correspond further by email.

Several people have sent me this information.
There was a William Joseph Paisley, b. 10 July 1827, England, naturalized in USA. Son of unknown Paisley. He married Conyingham, Luzerne Co. Pa.: 1857: Jane Goodfellow. William died 15 Apr 1900.The family went to Hudson (Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area) Pa. Left the area when their house burned-down. They moved to West Hazleton/Harwood Pa. area to work in the coal mining industry as 'bosses.' None of this Paisley family ever worked underground as miners. 1870 census: p. 10, East Ward, Hazleton Borough, Luzerne Co. Pa.: Wm. listed as coal miner; along with wife, Jane, b. Eng.; son ROBERT, 11, b. Eng.; son Samuel, 9, b. Eng.; son Wm., 7, b. Eng.; son JOhn 4, b. Pa.; son Thomas 2, b. Pa.; son Joseph 7 mo., born Oct. 1869, Pa. Other of my info states that Robert was b. 3 Jan 1859, and the family had come to USA from Yorkshire, England. So, this places your ROBERT in his family. William Joseph had 10 children.

I, too have found the will of John Paisley, but I only found the one that listed Thomas Frazer Goddard. There is also a marriage settlement between the widow Goddard and John Paisley that I have found. I would love to find out more information about this John since he may be the brother of my g-g-g- grandfather, Capt. Robert Paisley/Paslay. Someone searching the Goddard line says that there were more children than Thomas Frazer Goddard and wondered why they were not mentioned in the will. I don't know the answer to that. I know that the Goddard plantation may have been the actual camp of Francis Marion, opposed to Snow's Island. The plantation is located on the bluff overlooking the island. Evidently John Paisley was speculating and buying property in new territories. It would be interesting to find out what became of the FL and the LA properties!
Let me know if you have found out further information and I'll do the same.

Kathie
I am organizing my files now, and it would take me a while to look up the information but I remember seeing the Mary Paisley m. to Greaves. They were m. in SC but moved somewhere else. I looked in the Paisley Family Society files but didn't find this information so I know it's in my loose information file. I think it was in a South Carolina Marriage Record book or maybe a newspaper clipping. When I come across it I'll send the info to you.
Martha

I'll be happy to share what I have. Are you interested in becoming a member of the Paisley Family Society? Besides trips to Scotland we go to Charleston to the Highland Games in September and we have a great publication from Scotland, the Journal.
Martha

The record I have is from a newspaper but sadly I only have the page the record is on and not the source. It was in the Issue of January 12, 1838, and says "Died at his residence in Haywood County, Tennessee on Friday the 1st inst., my beloved father-in-law, Francis Greaves, Esq. in the 56th year of his age. When a little boy he was left an orphan. At 25 years of age he was united in matrimony to Miss Mary Paisley, and a happier couple I have never known. About fifteen years ago, he joined the Methodist Episcopal Church. When I became acquainted with the family, and at the time of marriage which was in 1831, Mr. Greves was residing in Marion District, South Carolina. In 1833, he moved to Haywood county, Tennessee and settled on a farm, eleven miles from Brownsville. Soon as his family were comfortably fixed on the farm, he commenced a building for the use of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The house was dedicated to the worship of Almighty God in May 1836. (eulogy) B. H. Capers. Brownsville, Tenn, Dec. 9, 1837.
I think it must have come from newspaper articles, but I looked through my notebooks and most of them have the name of the newspaper at the top of the page. This one did not. The Winyaw Intelligencer was one newspaper in the area and Holcomb has several books on newspaper articles from SC papers. I really slipped that time by not getting the name of the paper. It may have been a page of several that I have filed with other family names.
Hope this helps.
Martha
P. S. We are getting ready for the 3rd weekend in Charleston and the Games. Our chieftain is joining us from Scotland. Won't you consider coming along?
