No names are in the bible other than what is listed above. I am unclear on the relationship to John Davis and Edward Davis as well. Any help appreciated as I have very little information available on James and Clary's children.

County of Lackawanna
James B, Palmer, late a private of Company “I”, 104” Regiment Pennsylvania Infantry Volunteers, and now residing in Fell Township, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania give the following account and history of the disability for and on account of which he claims a pension under the statutes of the United States, to wit: I was at the time of enlisting in the organization a strong, healthy and vigorous man, and so continued until on or about the first day of August 1865. On that day, I was doing sentinel or guard duty on the wall of what was then call the “Hard Labor Prison” at Norfolk, Virginia. Some of the prisoners attempting to escape, having for the purpose undermined the wall, I was called down to assist in preventing them from doing so, and while descending upon a ladder, which had been placed to the wall for that purpose, the ladder turned and I fell to the ground a distance of from eight to ten feet, my back striking across the ladder violently as I fell. The shock of the fall rendered me helpless and I was immediately taken to the barracks by two of my comrades. These comrades were William Barnes and Oscar Stine of my Company .
My back was very much strained and bruised so that in course of time it became very sore gathering and the gathering finally broke leaving an ugly scar on both sides of the back bone which remains to this day. This gathering broker after I reached my home in the latter part of the month. I remained in the barracks released from duty though not attended by a surgeon, for three or four days totally unable to do any duty, and during this short time afterwards that I remained in the service could only do the lightest duty, my back at no time without increasing pain. After I got my discharge Aug 25,1865, I came to live in Fell township, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, when I have lived here ever since. It was not until the summer of 1866 that I could do any manual labor at all; in fact, part of the time I could not walk with out help. “Dr” Elias Palmer my physician and my father, attended me.. he was not a regular physician and is now dead. When the summer of 1866 set in I got some (not legible) and was able to do light “chores” but was not then nor have I been able since to do a good days work.
In the winter of 1867, I again had a bad spell with my back. While there on a visit to my brother who lived in Roman (sp?) Coral, New York, I was confined to the house several weeks and to my bed at least three weeks on account of it, and unable to get home was compelled to stay there a long time. Since that spell I have now been confined by it to the house never their a day or so at a time-which occurs frequently; but all of the time my back and hips have been very weak, now constant pain, and at times especially after some slight exposure it is almost impossible for me to walk. During all the time, I have been too (not legible) to him a physician and my father “Dr.” Palmer, who died about a year ago, treated me. He used to give me liniment for my back and medicine of his own to take internally. I cannot lift any weight at all and my disability is now as great that I can not earn my living as I did before entering the service by doing a man’s days work but am compelled to seek and earn a scanty subsistence by fishing in the small (not legible) of the county and in the spring fixing gardens for the people and neighbors around me. I am since by reason of said disability entirely disabled for the performance of manual labor. My post office address is Carbondale, Pa. signed James B. Palmer

Original Pension Claim No 465.490 James B. Palmer, Rank -,Company I, 104 Reg’t Pa Vols, Scranton, PA
Claimants Post office address: Carbondale Date of Examination 13 April, 1887
We hereby certify that in compliance with the requirements of the law* we have carefully examined this applicant, who state that he is suffering from the following disability, incurred in the service, viz:
Cause of disability: Injury to the back
If a pensioner, fill in the amount, if not, erase the whole line. ( Line has a mark across the page here)
Pulse rate per minute 78; respiration 18; temperature 98.4; height 5’ 2”, weight 126 pounds, age 57 years.
Here make the following statement upon which he bases his claim for : Original
Here give the claimants statement as briefly and completely possible. In the (not legible) part of August 1865 at Norfolk, VA while on guard duty on the prison wall he fell and injured his back and in consequences was laid up until the following spring. Has never fully recovered from the injury nor has he been able to do a hard days work since receiving it.
Here give a full symptom picture of the case embracing all the physical and rational signs, but confining it to the present condition of the claimant.
Upon examination we find the following objective conditions: There is a scar large as a silver quarter overt the second lumbar vertebrae; also another scar and inch to the right of the first large as a half dollar. These scar are probably the result of abcess. They are neither adherent or tender. There is some stiffness of the lumbar muscles and the disability would in our opinion be fully covered by a rating of ¼ degree. The lungs are normal in percussion and air circulation. The heart is normal in size, pounds and rhythm. The stomach , liver and spleen are normal..
It must be borne in mind that the duty of the Surgeon is to give an opinion as to the proportionate degree of disability as ¼, ½, total & c., through the grades without any regard to dollars and cents, and to make such full particular description as will afford to this Office the ground for intelligent opinion and action in rating.
Rate for each cause of disability. If prolonged by vicious habits, the word not should be erased and the reason for the erasure given.
From the existing condition and the history of this claimant, as stated by himself, it is, in our judgement, ---probable that the disability was incurred in the service as he claims, and that it has not been prolonged or aggravated by vicious habits. He is, in our opinion entitled to a ¼ degree rating for the disability caused by injury to the back, for that caused by---, and,,, caused by,---
