Johann Henrich Bengel (l735-l782) was born in Germany. After he came to America he married Catharine Kohler (l736-c.l786) on 27 June l747 in Germantown, Pennsylvania. From there the settled in the Shenandoah Valley sometime prior to the Revolutionary War. Johann Henrich Bengel name was anglicized to "John Henry Pangle". They had at least three sons tht are known, Henry Pangle (c.l750-l822) eldest, Frederick Pangle (c.l765-l836) and John Pangle (l769/70-l852), my ancestor. Henry Pangle (c.l750-l822) remained in Shenandoah Co., Virginia, however Frederick and John Pangle removed themselves in l792 to Hawkins Co., Tennessee. They settled in the area around Whitesburg, Hamblen Co., Tennessee where they owned land. They are buried in the Bent Creek Baptist Church cemetery. However, their tombstone were made of limestone and have weathered over the years and the writing on the stones is illegible.
