We continue to find new information about the Panthers in the Mösbach, Achern, Baden area.

Beginning with the oldest information:
The marriage record of Nicolous Panter (sic) and Anna Maria Limbler in 1757 lists Nicolous' father as Laurentius Panter (sic) and Anna Maria's father as Joannes Limbler, both in Stadelhoffen. The handwriting on this is not clear. Anna Maria and Joannes' last name appears to be Limbler here but appears more like Limbor in their son's marriage record.

The marriage record of Franciscus Josephus Panther and Genovefa Schindler lists Franciscus Josephus' parents as Nicolai Panther and Anna Maria Limbor of Stadelhoffen and Genovefa's parents appear to be Joannes Francisci Schindler and Anna Maria Litschin of Erlach.

MUSCATINE, Iowa - Eugene A. Panther, 84, of Muscatine, died Tuesday, February 28, 2006, at Unity Hospital.
Funeral Mass will be at the St. Mathias Church. The Reverend John P. Gallagher of the Ss. Mary & Mathias Parish will officiate. Honorary Bearers will be Ian and Alec Roberson. Casket Bearers will be Nathan Panther, Jessica Myra, Ben Panther, Matthew Panther, Erika Panther, Marc Jorgensen. Burial will be at Rock Island National Cemetery with Military Rites provided by Moline American Legion.
Visitation will be at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home with a Rosary Prayer Service at the funeral home by the Knights of Columbus Laurent Council No. 1305, and also from at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Special Olympics or Kan Do Programs of the Muscatine Community Y or Ss. Mary & Mathias Parish.
Eugene was born on July 20, 1921, in Donnellson, the son of Benedict and Elizabeth Menke Panther. He married Wilma A. Merschman on June 10, 1946, at the St. Paul Catholic Church, St. Paul, Iowa.
He served as a First Lieutenant in the US Army 137th Infantry Regiment Division during World War II. He was wounded outside of Bastogne, Belgium, and received the Bronze Star.
Gene was employed by the US government for 42 years starting his career working for the Treasury Department in Washington, DC, the Soil Conservation Service Department of Agriculture, Internal Revenue Service, the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms Division retiring in 1987.
He was a member of the Ss. Mary & Mathias Parish, the VFW Post #1565, American Legion Post #27, Elks Lodge #304 and the Moose Lodge #388. He served on the board of ARC for 25 years, he also served on the Parrish Council and on the Diocesan Council. He also volunteered at the Genesis Rehab Center in Davenport.
He is survived by his wife, Wilma Panther of Muscatine; two sons, David Panther and Kathy Kundert, of Seattle, Washington, and Timothy M. Panther and wife, Nancy, of Muscatine; two daughters, Pam Pickering and husband, Grant, of Muscatine, and Lori Panther and husband, David Roberson of Boston, Massachusetts; eight grandchildren, Marc Jorgensen of Helena, Montana, Jessica Myra of Naperville, Illinois, Erika Panther of Chicago, Nathan Panther of Muscatine, Ben and Matthew Panther of Seattle, Washington, and Ian and Alec Roberson of Boston, Massachusetts; three great-grandchildren; six sisters, Mary Winnike of West Point, Loretta Blind and husband, Bob, of West Point, Martha Dohman and husband, Al, of West Point, Agnes Miller of Columbus, Nebraska, Rita Steffensmier and husband, Elmer, of Fort Madison, and Carol Fullenkamp and husband, Ron, of West Point; and one brother, Urban Panther and wife, Bertha, of West Point.

She was a member of the Ss. Mary and Mathias Parish, Catholic Daughters of the America – Joan of Arc Court Number 524, and the Women of the Moose.
Her joys in life were sewing quilt tops with the help of Eugene, bingo, and cooking for family gatherings. She enjoyed having her grandchildren stop in after school to hang out at grandma’s house, and her cookies were a big hit with the grandchildren who visited from out of state.
She is survived by her children, Dave Panther of Seattle, Washington, Tim Panther and wife, Nancy, of Muscatine, Pam Pickering and husband, Grant, of Muscatine, and Lori Panther of Boston, Massachusetts; eight grandchildren, Marc Jorgensen of Helena, Montana, Jessica Myra of Naperville, Illinois, Erika Panther of Chicago, Illinois, Nathan Panther of Muscatine, Ben and Matthew Panther, both of Seattle, Washington, and Ian and Alec Roberson, both of Boston, Massachusetts; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Bill Merschman and wife, Bernice, of West Point; and one sister, Martha Menke of Pilot Grove.

I know your family quite well. Mary Cross is the oldest daughter of my great grandparents; James S. Panther and Louisa Emmoline Panther. James parents were Daniel Gibby (adopted by a Gibby family - Jonathon Gibby who had land on the Cherokee Nation as far back as 1809. Traditional story is that Daniel wandered into the settlement of Jonathon and wife. Daniel married Roinna Rowland, daughter of Malachi Rowland. Louisa was the third daughter of John S. Panther and Mary Sutton. James served in the Civil war from Quallaton with Thomas' Legion under James Terrill who was in charge of the Cherokee companies, as quartermaster. They were mostly limited to Strawberry Plains and the Smokey Mts.

I found the family record that includes Moriz Panther. His father is Joseph Panther and it appears the mother is Genovefa, but that's not too clear. Here their family:

Wife - Genovefa (I think. It's not clear. It gives her last name but I can't make it out.) - No birth date given

Aloysius and Ferdinand Panther Breakthrough

A cousin of mine, Allison Winnike, has made a breakthrough in the Aloysius and Ferdinand Panther line. Previously, we only had their census information saying they were from Baden Baden. She tracked them down to Mösbach, South of Achern, Baden. I'm quite sure this is the breakthrough we've been searching for for years.

I have seen scans of the birth records for Aloys and Ferdinand so far but she says she's tracked down a total of six children of Moritz and Elisabeth Panther in Mösbach. Below is the text as it was sent to me:

Moriz Panther & Elisabeth Birk [maybe also Bürk] married 14 Mar 1832 at Sankt Mauritius Katholische Pfarrkirche, Ulm, Amt Oberkirch, Kinzigkreis, Großherzogtum Baden.

I've found six children so far:

1. Ferdinand Panther born 20 Apr 1833 in Mösbach, Amt Oberkirch, Mittelrheinkreis, Großherzogtum Baden and christened 20 Apr 1833 at Sankt Mauritius Katholische Pfarrkirche, Ulm, Amt Oberkirch, Mittelrheinkreis, Großherzogtum Baden. Arrived in New York 24 Oct 1854 on the "R.L. Gillchrest." Married Amalie Traub abt 12 Nov 1855 in the United States. Died abt 12 Nov 1915 in Des Moines County, Iowa.

2. Philipp Panther born 28 Apr 1834 in Mösbach, Amt Oberkirch, Mittelrheinkreis, Großherzogtum Baden and christened 29 Apr 1834 at Sankt Mauritius Katholische Pfarrkirche, Ulm, Amt Oberkirch, Mittelrheinkreis, Großherzogtum Baden. 6. Moriz Panther christened 4 Sep 1844 at Sankt Mauritius Katholische Pfarrkirche, Ulm, Amt Oberkirch, Mittelrheinkreis, Großherzogtum Baden. Died 1 Aug 1866 and buried 3 Aug 1866 at Sankt Roman Katholische Pfarrkirche, Mösbach, Bezirksamt Achern, Kreis Baden, Landeskommissä rbezirk Karlsruhe, Großherzogtum Baden. [He was apparently in the military, 5th Infanterie-Regiment . I need to scrutinize the text to find out more details.]

Louise Leo lives in Andrews, NC and has done considerable research on the Panthers and Painters. She is my mother's cousin. She has done considerable working in trying to tie down a Cherokee connection without success.

Born: 1822, Macon, North Carolina, USA
Died: 21 Feb 1853, Cherokee, North Carolina, USA

His parents were Leonard PAINTER and Lucy Smith. The name Panther seems to have made some drastic changes over time. Leonard's father is listed as Johann BENDER. I'm not sure why. I came across a document, online, about Johann and it stated that his widow did not know why his name was altered. I THINK Johann was a soldier during the Revolutionary War.

Anyway, Leonard and Lucy were my g-g-g-great grandparents. Their son Jacob is my ancestor, he and Angeline Shepherd had Alfred. Alfred and Mary Davis had Julie Ann. Julie Ann and Johnathan had Dennis, my grandfather.

Hope some of that helps and doesn't overwhelm!

She talks about Her husband Jim (a carpenter) being in good health.
Talks about sister Anna living in Greensville, SC. and sister Ada living in Clayton GA.

she says she sees her folks very often but then mentions their mother has been dead for 7yrs. (must be Mary Catherine Panther that has been living with Sarah.) Buried in Clayton GA.

all the psnther/painter/panter/puuthers,should get together and talk about wat we all havce in common. one thing that hasn't been mentioned is the gigh possibiliy that a lot of couains were married. maybe thats wy it is so far ver had to hard to follow everythig so far.

seems like there are not too many of us on this site any longer. I am looking for any info re: this family out of n.c. and thomassons who married into the panther's ( i think they were cousins). I would like to get some pictures if any one has any and some info as to indian heritage or not??

hello, it was good to hear from someone who is still on the trail. i am the grandaughter of claude and arizona thomasson-painter. i have traced panther back to john s., who it looks like was the "sire" of both panther and thomasson lines. please take a look at the "painter family tree" on ancestry and you can see where i'm going with it all. it is very much still a work in progress. maybe you have some input. thanks again for answering.

helo, i am sorry to not have responded to you sooner, too many things going on. i would like to correspond about what would seem to be our common ancestry. my grandmother was elizabeth a. thomasson, wife of claude painter/panther. if you are still on ancestry, look at Painter family tree. i'm not sure it 's all correct yet, but i'm working on it. also, come on all you painter/ panther's. let's see if we can get it straight. i know we are all out there someplace.

I am finally going to get to the bottom of all this, MAYBE....Ever since i was a little girl, my dad has said he played on the reservation, but he never knew who is grandparents were, (john l. panther,son of james c. panther and laura evans) I only found out after i sent for my grandfather's s.s. paperwork. If you find out any info, please, PLEASE, reply. ( my grand mother was from the thomasson side of all this. Elizabeth A. Thomasson for the record.

I am researching my Panther/Panter ancestors from Rutherford and Polk Counties in NC. My gg-grandfather was John S. Panter who married Harriet Rhodes in Polk Co.,NC in 1857 and fought in the Civil War on the Union side as John Panther. It appears from the 1860 census that he was born about 1837 or 1838. The problem is that I cannot find his heritage. Was he a son of Leonard Panther of Rutherford Co.? Or....???
You seem to be quite knowledgeable about both genealogy and the Panther/Panter listings, so I hope you can help me learn more about my family. I have a portrait of John and he shows no particular facial traits of the Cherokee. His eyes are blue and his black hair shows at least some curl. He is a very handsome man and well dressed for the area. I'm not sure when or where the portrait was done.
I would really appreciate any info you could share with me.

Kim, do you know if Mary Mira Panther-Thomasson or her sister Louisa and James Gibby had a daughter: Mary Cross Gibby? Seems Panther/Gibby/Stanberry/Thomasson were close and the mariges confuse me. Which one IS my line.

Of note, my Panter family has limited record of some of its members living in Oklahoma with the name spelled "Panter," but, probably due to their accent, it is pronounced "Painter." Some of my g-g-g-grandfather's records in TN have "Painter" on them; some show "Panter."
