Reduced price for DNA testing

As group administrator of the Park/e/s DNA surname project, I’d like to pass along news about a limited-time price reduction for DNA testing from our testing firm. Unfortunately, we receive very little or no advance word of these promotions, so as you can see the limited time price reduction begins today and only runs to June 24th, 2009.

Offer summary:

• Y-DNA37+mtDNA for $119. (The regular project price is $248 – a reduction of more than 50%)
• The promotion will begin on June 9, 2009 and will end on June 24, 2009
• Kits ordered in this sale must be paid for by June 30, 2009

If you have been considering Y-DNA testing for your Park/e/s line, this is an excellent opportunity to get a 37 marker test at a greatly reduced price, and I would urge you to order before the deadline. If you have any questions about Y-DNA testing for genealogy, or the order process, feel free to email me at: kenparks@earthlink.net

To order a test and join the Park/e/s DNA surname project:
http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Parke
Just in time for Christmas!-Reduced DNA test prices til December 31, 2008

For anyone who has been considering DNA testing, Family Tree DNA (FTDNA), the testing firm used by the Park/e/s surname project, has announced reduced prices for some of their tests. These prices are in effect for tests ordered and paid for by December 31, 2008. Test kits do not have to be completed by that date, only ordered and paid for to qualify for the lower group rate. Tests must be ordered through a surname group to qualify for these prices.

The Y-DNA37 is, in my opinion, the most useful test for our purposes, though some may desire the mitochondrial test as well or testing at the 67 marker level—entirely up to the participant to choose which test they want.

Y-DNA37: $119 after Dec 31: $149
Y-DNA37+mtDNAPlus: $199 after Dec 31: $278
Y-DNA67: $218 after Dec 31: $248
Y-DNA67+mtDNAPlus: $308 after Dec 31: $377
mtDNAPlus: $139 after Dec 31: $149
Full Genomic mtDNA: $395 after Dec 31: $449
SuperDNA: $613 after Dec 31: $695

To order a test and join the Park/e/s DNA surname project, go to:

http://www.familytreedna.com/public/park-e-s/

Click on the link on the left side of the homepage marked, “Request to join this group”

With reduced prices, a DNA test kit makes a great gift idea! If you have any questions or need help ordering, feel free to contact me. My email is on the top of the homepage of the Park/e/s DNA Surname Project.

Ken Parks
Group Administrator-Park/e/s DNA Surname Project
Vice President, The Parke Society PS#1406
Mary Parke b Preston, Lancashire, ENG abt 1840 m Thomas Evans

Mary Parke b Preston, Lancashire, ENG m Thomas Evans, b Dowlais, Glamorgan, WAL 1824 in about 1861-2. They had three children at least. Thomas was an Inspector of Mines, in South Wales and then in Derby, where he d 1887. He left a widow and one son.

Mary was the daughter of John P Parke, described in 1861 as Master Cotton Spinner and Manufacturer in 1871, employing 320 workpeople, also landowner and Lord of the Manor of Withnell and Whalton, in Lancashire. His wife was Margaret; Mary’s siblings were Frederick, Henry and John A.

Frederick became a brick manufacturer.

I would be interested to hear of anyone who knows of this family – particularly to find out the name and fate of the son of Thomas Evans and Mary Parke, likely born in the 1860s, perhaps Swansea, perhaps Belper or Derby in Derbyshire. Thomas’ Will, infuriatingly, refers to him as “my son” without naming him.

Many thanks

Graham Simons
Re: Lt. Richard Parks (1667/8-1725) ancestry

Did you ever get this pedigree straight? I have just gotten to this point and am going crazy trying to figure out who's who.

Most everything I have read shows that Richard Park and his wife Margery {Crane ?}had one son THOMAS.

Beginning with Lt Richard Parks and the Town of Concord, MA: Both a Richard Parks Sr and a Richard Parks Jr resided in Concord, both being assessed taxes in 1689. Both appear in Concord tax records and other town documents until 1711, after which only Jr appears.
On 4/9/1711 the elder Richard Parks Sr and his wife Mary as well as their son John Parks and his wife Deliverance, convey to the younger Richard Parks Jr of Concord, land & buildings. Thus a good indication of their familial relationship.
Afterwards John, his wife and his parents all moved to Weston, MA. On 8/13/1715 a court order was issued which allowed the town of Weston to order the removal of the elder Richard Parks Sr and his wife Mary as they were "both aged and impotent persons". One can assume that they had become a burden on the town of Weston.
In 1725 a John Parks was living in Stonington, CT when he pruchased land in Stafford, CT. It was thought that he came from MA. Is he the same John, brother of Lt Richard? Did he take his parents to CT with him.
It has been proven that Lt Richard Parks of Concord was NOT the son of Thomas Parks of Cambridge / Newton MA. According to Jackson {History of Newton}: That Richard was having children born in Newton at the same time our Lt Richard was having children in Concord. Thus it would appear that Savage was incorrect in his connection of the Concord Richard Parks to the Newton Thomas Parks and his son Richard.
So-o-o- I think we can assume that Lt Richard Jr Parks of Concord, is the brother of John Parks of Concord / Weston, both sons of Richard Sr Parks and his wife Mary, of Concord / Weston. But then where do they fit in the Park, Parks, Parke, Parkes lineage?

I've been looking at your Parks in Monroe County and have not found a Sallie/Sarah yet. She might be a wife of one of Charity's brothers? have you investigated Charity's family at all? I need to know about when the picture was taken and how old she looks in the picture. That might help me track her down.

I found a William Smith, born 1841, in Monroe County in 1850. His parents were Anthony and Abigail. William was the youngest of lots of siblings. I found Charity and William Smith in Metcalfe County in 1860, by 1870 Charity was back in Monroe County with her parents.

By the way, did you know that Thomas Ferguson's mother was apparently also a Park?

If you want to email me the picture of Sallie, I'll give you my email address.

Sharon Meeker
KY

Summer—A Great Time for a Refreshing Dip in the Gene Pool!!

With many of us dealing with scorching temps these days, what better time to test the waters by dipping a toe into the PARK/E/S gene pool? Then—take the plunge!!

If you’ve been uncertain of the benefits of DNA testing to further your PARK/E/S research, we now have 90 members in our database representing 10 distinct genetic groups (several connected to known immigrant ancestor lineages) as well as 17 members still searching for a match—and it could be you!

After nearly 2 years of matching only my known relatives, I recently found a genetic cousin whose line goes back to Pennsylvania before the Revolution, and we now have an exciting new avenue of research open before us—all thanks to DNA testing!

For as little as $99 (OK, they tack on $2 for shipping), you can join the PARK/E/S DNA database and find out which of our 90 members may be your newest cousin. With the project growing every week, your odds of finding a new family member are better than the odds you get in Vegas!

So check us out at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/park-e-s and take your PARK/E/S family research to a whole new level!

If you have any questions about how to order a test or any other aspect of DNA testing, let me hear from you and I’ll help in any way I can.

So come on in—the water’s fine!

My Charity Jane Parke ( my great grandmother ) was born in 1838 and died on March 19, 1919. Her parents were James, Born Nov. 18,1799 in Barren Co. He died Oct. 28, 1879. Her mother was Anna Amy M. Smith, born about 1806 and died Dec. 4, 1877. Charity married a man named William O. Smith on Jan 5, 1860 and he died 9 months later on Oct. 30, 1860. I cannot find any information about him, how he died, or his family . Charity had one child, a daughter, Elnora ( Nora ) Ann Smith Ferguson ( my grandmother ), born April 15, 1875 and died Feb. 2, 1949 ( she married Thomas Grant " Bud " Ferguson on June. 4, 1893.) William Smith was dead 15 years before my grandmother was born, so we do not know who her father was.

I do not have any information on the Sallie Parke, that I mentioned, only the picture with her name written at the top. Do you know if Sallie was a name they used for some other name? Some of the Parkes were from Metcalfe Co. too. I cannot find her in the family history or the bible. like I did the others.

Bonita Pendleton

reSEARCHing: PARK/Speddington Descendents

Have you noticed that with each question answered...three new questions present themselves??? In my vast experience, (of three months) I have certainly found this to be true.

Today...my questions are related to James Park (est 1830-1899) & Grace Speddington-Park. (1862-1836).

I believe that they emigrated from UK to USA/NJ in 1886 with their two sons, William (1883-1903) & Thomas Alexander (1885-1953). My grandfather, Robert James was born in USA/NJ in 1894.

My primary question(s) today are:
* What is James Park's birthdate?
* What is James & Grace's Wedding date/location?
* Did they emigrate on the ABYSSINIA in 1886?
* Where did they live from 1886-1900?
* Did Grace & her sons travel again to UK & return on the ADRIATIC in Dec/1894?
* Where is James buried?

You assistance & insight will be greatly appreciated.

DonnaChristine Park
WHSPER0851@hotmail.com

Re: Moses Parke

It may help to understand the history of the states/counties at the time we're looking at.

Roger Parke, his wife, and son John arrived in Hopewell, Hunterdon Co., NJ from Northumberland, England in 1686. Roger died in the same place only 4 years later, in 1690.

From 1700 on through about 1748, Virginia colony was growing west from the coastal cities. This was Indian territory slowly being carved into counties. Larger counties were also being carved into smaller counties as their outer extents grew. The area of Virginia where the John Parke/Parks settled was near the Great Cacapon River, NW of what is now Winchester, in a place called Parks Valley. Prior to 1753, this was part of Frederick Co., Virginia, and part of the land grant that came to Thomas, 6th Lord Fairfax, through his wife after her father, the original grant-holder, died.

In the late 1740s and early 1750s, George Washington surveyed this area for Lord Fairfax, and included in those surveys were land grants to John Parke and John Parke his son. Sometimes their names also appear as Parks, but this may be a transcription error (e looks a lot like s) or some other reason. Nonetheless, sometime between 1690 and 1757, John Parke (Sr.) moved to Frederick Co., VA.

In 1753, Hampshire Co. was formed out of parts of Frederick and other adjacent counties, but because of the French and Indian War, and Indian resistance on the frontier, this wasn't really achieved/finalized until around 1757-58.

During this time, John Parke (Sr.) died and was buried in "Hampshire Co., VA, in 1757, at the age of 80.

John Parke his son (1707-1758) may have been born in Hopewell, NJ, but he lived and married and died in Hampshire Co., VA. He is listed as a Sergeant in the rolls of the Virginia militia in 1758 from "Frederick Co., VA", so may well have died shortly after joining in some kind of action.

The French and Indian War ran from 1754 to 1763, and George Washington held an officer's commission during this time. Most of the western and northern edges of the British colonies were disputed during this time, and Virginia was no exception.

Finally... Hampshire Co, Virginia, was one of the counties that were ... collected into the new state of *West Virginia* in 1861-3 during the Civil War.

In short: Frederick/Frederich Co. VA is often Hampshire Co. VA is the same as Hampshire Co., WV, and the county name/state depend entirely on 1) the year of the record, and 2) whether the transcriber/recorder "corrected" those items to reflect what it is at present. Similarly, the original family name was Parke coming from England, and underwent changes to both Parks and then Park over time.

John Parke (Jr.) had at least three sons, John Parke/s (III), George Parke/s, and Ebenezer Parke/s. John III married Anna Maria "Mary" Millslagle, daughter of a German immigrant from PA, and George Parke married her sister Hannah. This we know from deeds made out by the womens' father, by then Anglicized from Johann Andreas Muhlschlagel to "Andrew Millslagel" or Millslagle, to his two sons-in-law, the brothers John Parks and George Parks, shortly before his death.

George, Hannah, and their son George, are all buried in Parks Hollow Cemetery, Capon Bridge, Hampshire Co., WV. George Sr. is listed as a Colonel, and given his age, most likely in the Revolutionary War, or possibly the War of 1812. (There is a land grant from 1812 for "George Park Son of the Other Heirs at Law of Roger Park." There is a John Park buried there in Parks Cemetery, no indication if there are birth/death dates for him, as well as a passel of other Park/Parke/Parks, but no Moses. from the mid-1700s-1800 generations. I would guess the John Park buried here is George's brother, because John III died and was buried in or near Circleville, Pickaway Co., OH.

(I know you posted in 2000, here's hoping that either you're still reading this board, and/or others who happen upon it can use this info.)

Robert: I had just received my copy of the" Hartpence Family in America" by Esther Heer. I found a William Ross Hartpence, b 23 Mar 1839 in Dearborn Co., Indiana. He married Harriet Mikesell. He served in the Civil War and was author and editor of the Harrison (Ohio) Press with his brother Walter. It lists three books he published but no mention of one about Texas. Sometime after 1910 he moved to Long Beach, CA to live with his daughter and died 14 Apr. 1927. If this sounds like your William let me know and I will give you the rest of what is in the book on his line.
Pat Stevens
lane@grantspass.com

Hi Vicky: Welcome to a very obcessive hobby. Do you know the parents of Nancy Jane? If she is descended from Joseph Parke and Hannah Hartpence I probably have some information for you. I'm not familiar with the name Hobler. My Parke line ends with Joseph's daughter, Easter, but I have quite a lot from that point back plus the Hartpence line.
Pat
lane@grantspass.com

OK Vicky, now I know what page we're on. Wesley was a brother of my Easter Parke. I saw in the 1860 census that Wesley had a daughter Nancy, but I didn't know what time frame we were talking about and I didn't know who Nancy married. I have quite a lot on Joseph but unfortunately I lost it in the computer when it crashed awhile back and I haven't typed it back in yet. I will have to do that now. I do have Hartpence and Munch information I can send you now if you will e-mail your e-mail address. If you are new at this you may be reluctant to give out your e-mail address but we in genealogy do it all the time. There is so much information to share.
Pat

Re: Roger Parke of NJ

Hi, I'm not sure if I am in your linage, my Parke family comes from Gloucester Co., N.J. My grandfather was William Henry Parke, b.25 July 1871 in Salem, N.J. My greatgrandfather was William Henry Weldon Parke, b.27 Oct.1843, in Salem, N.J., married Anna Elizabeth Flanagan, his father was James Parke Jr., b.abt 1808 in N.J., married Mary A Kirker. He was probably born at Parke Causeway Farm, which was somewhere between Williamstown and Downer, N.J. My uncle Earl V Parke, b.1896, wrote that it was believed that Richard Parke of Massachussets, was our ancestor. Also the father at the time of the revolution is supposed to have served, three years in the colonial armed forces, the N.J. militia , or under some local general. One grandson, a James Parke, became a boatcaptain while living at Parke Causway, got married, he didn't know the name of the woman, (probably Mary A Kirker), they had children and in order to be near his work, moved to Salem,N.J. I've traced back and verified to James Jr., but I'm still working on James Sr. I'm very interested in your book, but i'm not if my line fits, if it does i'll send you everything i've got. Any info you could give me would be greatly appreciated.
Don Parke
332 Falconcrest St. W
Plant City, Fl. 33565
