My grandfather, William Franklin Shuffield, was born 10-28-1878 in Spiro, Ok. His father was John L Shuffield, his mother was Mary Partain, I was told her middle name may have been Elizabeth. Then they moved to Conway Ar. and I know of two sisters he had, Mary Nora and Addie. I can find some info on Mary Nora but nothing on my grandpa and his sister. Are you related?

My grandfather, Seaborn Banister Partain/Parton was born in AL. His father was James Partain, and James father was Banister Parton. A group of Partains and others from TN. and AL. moved to Johnson Co., IL. in the 1850's. We have proof that James was Banister son through DNA and Court Record of Johnson Co., IL.

Being your sister-in-law has done research on the Partain I wonder if she might know this family. Thank you.

JoAnn

She has all the way back to Daniel Partain that came over in the 1700s from England to the Carolinas. He had 2 children. Joanne Partain-Phelan

My mother (Loretta Veneva Partain Russell) kept pretty good records of her family history. She wrote in a cover sheet to her ancestry that the Partain's and the Story's cam to Illinois from Ala. Some were born in Macon and Wilson Co.'s. My Great Great grandfather Wilson C. Partain was one of these. His family first settled at Old Salem Church near Stonefort, Ill. then later moved to Herod, to a home just over 1 mile east and 1 mile west of Everett Psartain's home on Rte 34.(Everett has been dead for many years.) Originally the Partain's camr from Ireland and were of French descent with the name originally being spelled Parton. The first Partain's came to Jamestown Va. on the third ship from England and survived the initial devastation there. Some of the families went to Alabama and one Charles Partain made his way to Carrier Mills and yet another to Tenn. I am currently searching N.C. historical library records to find any info on Bannister Partain born in 1793 and died in Ill. 1855. It is reported he was born in N.C. traveled to Tenn and then Ill., but he remains a mystery before he settled in Ill.Hope this is helpful! Loretta

Mary Drake, w/o Hiram Partain. Died 1940 Blount County, Alabama

While researching another Partain line, I've obtained the death certificate for Mary DRAKE PARTAIN. She was born 4 December 1863 in Cullman County, Alabama, and died 25 February 1940 in Blount County, Alabama. Her parents were Dennis DRAKE (b. GA) and Emily BATES (b. AL), and her husband was Hiram N. PARTAIN. If this is your Mary DRAKE PARTAIN, I'll be happy to send you the certificate.

I'm not researching this line, and have no further information on this family.

My ggg Grandmother was Frances Elizabeth Gulley, who was married to Benjamin E. Partain. I am descended from their daughter, Sarah Amanada Ellen Partain, who married VanDiver Gary Herring and had a daughter, Agnes Elizabeth Herring, who married Joseph G. Hulme, and had a daughter Annie Ruth Hulme who was my grandmother. Is it true that Frances Gulley was a Cherokee Indian? My grandmother told me that and I have found the name "Gulley" on some of the Indiana Census documents from the 1800s. Does anyone know anything more about her parents or about Benjamin E.? I know the Partains were in this country since the 1600s.

Kelly,

If you are still on Ancestry would be interested in exchanging info or seeing if you have any updated info.

I believe that this Andrew Jackson Chaney (1812-1886) is the brother to my GGG Grandmother Mary Jane Chaney (1824 KY - aft 1900 AL), parents Henry W Chaney and Susan A Henry. I don't have any info on a Milbry Amelia Partain but the 1850 Census in Blount Co, AL has him listed with wife "Amelbry" could have easly meant A. Melbry.

Interestingly Mary Jane Chaney (his sister) also married a Partain in Blount Co, AL, Daniel Partain. He was from SC. Perhaps Milbry is a relative (sister?) of his although I have been unable to find his siblings and the premise that Hiram is his father is highly suspect and I cannot yet document

Let me know if you'd like to correspond any. partaij99@yahoo

Jan Partain

Shirley,

I have some info on Christopher Columbus Partain. What are you looking for specifically? He had two daughters that seem to get confused. One is Ada and the other sometimes goes by Adeline. Easy to understand the confusion.

Leanna (or Leanner) Adeline 1879-1942 Whom I have married to a Detwiler.

Ada Samantha 1888 - ? Whom I have married to a Jackson Gilliland along with documenting photo. Some people have her married to Detwiler.

The person who originally posted has LeAnna Adeline married to a William Calvin Rogers so now I'm really confused. Perhaps she was married more than once.

Let me know if I can help.
Re: Partain/Tedder Surnames
There is a lot of misinformation in your rebuttal to me.
You did not add one thing to what was a pleasnt exchange. Your lack of tact is so noted.

Stepped in someone’s territory it seems. I remember you back in the 90s when you were pleasantly seeking information about the Partin and Partain connection. It would have been between 1993 and 1997 I THINK. This is were you posted the information about Partin and Parton. I did not make it up. You said it was her intention to protect. If you have changed your story, I do not know and do not care. It makes no difference to me what she did or did not do. I find her not a very nice person and would be embarrassed if she were kin.

I never formed a proper archive system and never bought the software most of you have including my brother. I have to look in boxes, old floppies, and paper notes, lost some info on dying hard drives. I have several back up CDs that I have been going through to find hard evidence of my claim. I demand solid citations from anyone else and I do not excuse myself form that criteria. I will continue to look. I only dabble in this from time to time and have not made good order of it.

I saw on this computer in 2008 a copy of the microfiche that showed a Robert Partin in eastern TN ca 1780. I know the census was in 1780 but the info referenced seemed to be around 1786 and I do not know why. It showed Robt as head of house and race as Cherokee. I copied it and have not found the file and picture. It showed a white wife and maybe four children. I was shocked to see Partin as a Cherokee. It does not seem possible but I saw it. This is why in the story you just read that I posted said: It is “interesting” and did not proclaim it as truth but I did see it.

In the beginning (90s) you said you only wanted your children to know their heritage and that was the reason for your research. I find you have lost your innocence in the matter. You appear to be a matriarch now of all knowledge in the Partin history. Making statements in some places that some one did or did not exist. This is where you lose credibility. You cannot absolutely proclaim what was or was not absolutely.

When I traveled in the 80s (mainly mothers side because it had better continuity) accumulating history, I knew I had to be cautious of what was being told as truth. In time, things often are turned around added or left out. It happened with my mother’s story of whom was shot with an arrow in the knee (by Comanche’s in Texas) and carried it (arrowhead) around in his knee the rest of his life. She thought it was an uncle and it was not. It was however, it was a member of the family, she was mistaken and not intentionally. I have since played the roll of the victim in question. It was written by a direct descendant with the same name, he is now deceased as well.

If you want to be helpful that’s nice but please do not attack me.

Can you show me the tie between Robert Partin of 1609 in VA to James Monroe Partain in Falkville, AL? He like so many Partain’s was a Confederate soldier. (Only 27 out of 92 were blue bellies) He was killed while working his fence line shortly after the war by approx three men believed to be with a rock. His wife Mary Young then married a Junkins and kicked all of the Partain children out (disinherited just like that). (I think Junkins may have been in on the rock thingy and the land remains in their family. INTRESTING.)

This is when the children some how came to Texas. The same thing happened to my mother and her five siblings when her mother died in about 1924. They were forced to marry and get out. An oil well was on that property. Her two half brothers and sister got that and the land.

My mother’s folks were here during or before Texas was a Republic. All of their names are on the original plots of land.
Have a nice day
Re: Partain/Tedder Surnames

Partain There is so many different spellings, misspellings, and little known connectivity. The Cherokee part of your message interested me.

Robert Partin arrived in Virginia 1609 on the ship Blessing as an indentured slave. The ship came from the port Isle of Wight on England’s southern coast. His wife and two daughters arrived 8 years later. No “A”, this is Dolly Partins’ namesake, she added the “O” in professional life to protect family per her former sister in law.

I think it was on the 1780 census in Tennessee, the name of Robert Partin (no “A”) appeared as a Cherokee Indian head of house with a white wife and children. It was Cherokee territory in the early days another tribe came later. When and if Robert Partin the original, migrated from the Isle of Wight in VA I do not know yet, but that is the first and last place I see him.

My aunt, Ina Partain, often told me our name Partain was intentionally changed, while in Alabama or pre Alabama I do not know. James Monroe Partain JR came from Faulkville, Alabama. All she would ever tell me it had an “E”; it was dropped, and added the “A”. From where and how added I do not know. I have seen Parten, Partine, and other variations, never a Partein. One day I made a special trip to ask and she had died.

The early census takers were able to write and some had a sixth grade education often more literate than the people they interviewed. If a neighbor was not home they would ask someone else the name of a neighbor. This is where illiteracy and dialect could change recorded information. Partain is seldom pronounced with a hard “A” the first time someone attempts to pronounce it. It is usually Partin or Partion (as if the ti was an “S” and sometimes as Parton with French sound. Most people have always told me they thought it was French. Perhaps Pete Fountain the famous clarinet jazz player from Louisiana gives the idea from the last part of his name “tain”.

Searches from 25 years ago said it probably meant a pear keeper in England. I do not agree. Norman migration to England I believe.
While there are various spelling of Partain it is a name of ancient Norman origin. It arrived in England with the Norman invasion of 1066 and it comes from the Norman given name Partant. It relates to the spelling of old and middle english and how it had no rules.Norman French introduced this. Partain in terms of Irish might only relate in the sense that Britain dominated Ireland for centuries and there were British land owners who lived on the island.
Partains in general are a form of Parton/Partin/Parten/Parting/etc. Robert Partin/Parton came to Jamestown from England in 1607 and survived the Starving Time. His arrival and the later arrival of his wife and children are well documented as is his survival in the Starving Time. Many Partains out west descend from Gabriel (George Gabriel Partain or Gabriel George Partain). He was on the 1830 Cocke Co. TN census with his brother Benjamin, (Benjamin is my children's paternal line.) On the 1830 they were "Partin". Benjamin's descendants go by "Parton."

In the Parton (various spellings) genealogy project at familytreedna, we are getting almost perfect matches with all spellings, apparently almost all coming out of the South and going then mostly Westward, seem to descend from the Robert who came to Jamestown.

Re: Partain/Tedder Surnames

There is a lot of misinformation in this email.

I am the ex-sister-in-law in question and have done genealogy on this family since 1971. Dolly's Partons have been "Parton" 95% of the time since the late 1700s. She didn't not change the spelling of her name. She was born "Parton."

Dolly's line does match the descendants of Robert Partin/Parton who came to Jamestown in 1609. He does appear to have been English. Although he was "Partin" on the shipp8ing roster, most records for him in VA and for many of his descendants are spelled "Parton." He does appear to have been English. The are Partons in England today.

I have a Parton (all spellings) DNA Project at familytreedna.com. I do need to get a better website up and going to report those results. We have Partons and Partains and Partins etc. who often match and then we have some of same spellings who are no match at all.

There was no 1780 or 1790 census for Tennessee. The was no Robert Parton/Partin in that time period who was listed as a Cherokee Indian. There is no legend or clue that there were Cherokee Indians in this Parton line.

Going back on Dolly's mother's side (way way back) there is one possible Indian who married a Grooms. Also on Dolly's mother side there was a claimed Indian wife for her ancestor William Valentine. But I found the wife's parents and there was no Indian involved.

Dolly's farethest proven (by paper trail) ancestor was John Parton born about mid 1770s. The only time we ever know for sure that we had him was on the 1840 Greene Co. TN census. He was born in VA and his kids were born in NC. He was living beside his son Benjamin Parton in 1840 (Benjamin is also Dolly's direct line.)

We can find some of John's sons in 1830, but not John.

In 1840 Benjamin was on the Cocke Co. TN census (county lies between Greene and Sevier) beside his brother Gabriel (George Gabriel or Gabriel George). They were listed as "Partin" on that one.

When Gabriel went to Pope and Yell Co. AR his descendants went by "Partain."

Benjamin's descendants go by "Parton."

The following is where is listed the descendants of John Parton (Dolly's line) June 21, 2002 on genforum. I will edit anything that needs it after I paste it in:

children:
Benjamin-born NC ca 1798-1801 m Hannah Cole (Hannah's last name family tradition, no proof). This is my children's line and line of their Aunt Dolly Rebecca Parton. Benj. witnessed his brother Moses's marriage bond in Burke Co NC in 1828. Benj. on 1830 Cocke Co TN census, 1840 Greene Co. TN beside believed father John Parton, 1850 Murray Co. GA, early 1850s on Sevier Co. TN. Descendants use Parton spelling.

George Gabriel Parton/Partain or Gabriel George Parton/Partain- m Anna Lough (last name said to be Portugese. I have always doubted that, but I am sure that he was probably an immigrant. Any ideas out there?) Gabriel born NC. He and Benjamin on 1830 Cocke Co TN census. By 1840 Gabriel was in Pope Co. AR. His descendants go by Partain. His sister, Irene/Irena/Serena Parton Hicks, had a son George Gabriel Hicks or Gabriel George Hicks. One one census, he was George Hicks, and on another he was Gabriel Hicks. In AR on one census we find George Partain, on another Gabriel! It was Irena's census info that helped me figure this family out! I had looked at George for years in AR census records and hadn't put it all together until then!

John Parton/Partin born NC m Anna Ellison/Allison, dau of Rev. War Soldier Birch/Burch Allison and Hannah Ryan Hostley who was probably a widow when she married him. John was on 1840 Burke Co NC census near brother Randall. John was on 1850 Greene Co TN, 1860 Franklin Co. TN, 1870 on Nodaway Co. MO. Most descendants go by Partin.

Moses Parton born NC m Mary Hasley, perhaps daughter or close relation to Hannah Ryan "Hostley" above, late life wife of Rev. War Soldier Birch/Burch Allison. I believe that Moses was on 1830 Burke Co. NC; 1840 York Co SC census working in a technical trade, milling probably, marked on far right columns of full census; 1850 Greene Co TN; early 1860s on Sevier Co. TN. His sister, Irene/Irena/Serena Hicks, had a son named Moses. Descendants use Parton spelling (except for the Pardon family of jewelers in Knoxville, TN! When in service, WWI, I think, checks kept coming to the man in that line as "Pardon" and he gave up and just kept it that way!)

William Parton born NC on 1850 Greene Co. TN census, married Sarah Baker who was somehow kin to the Evans family. She and William belonged to church at Wittenburg in Greene Co., list of church members on-line on Greene Co genweb site. Also the 1850 Greeen Co TN census is on-line. I have never found any of William's descendants yet. (Since then, William Parton's family has been found in Scott Co. IN and two letters exist from his familiy back home to the Kiker relatives in Greene Co. TN. They had been "Linconites- Union together.)

Randall Parton born NC-possibly appearing twice on 1850 Greene Co TN census, once in his sister Candace's home. Randall appears to have married Nancy Goodson, perhaps dau of Matthew Goodson and wife "Celia?". Randall was on 1840 Burke Co NC census beside John (brother above wife Anna Allison) and beside Matthew Goodson and Celia. He is with them again in 1850 Greene Co. TN. After Randall and Nancy appear to have died, the Goodsons have Randall's children rearing them in Cocke Co. TN, 1860, I believe. I think that two of Randall's sons fought in the Civil War. The Goodson connection and the Brisendine/ Briscontine/various spellings, connection (Pamelia Briscontine b NC a widow with her chidlren was in Randall's home in 1850) may lead us to Randolph Co. NC. A Nathaniel Parton who is in Randolph Co. NC in 1860 census was son of James Parton and Nancy McGinnis who were married in Orange Co. NC. A Brisendine was one of the early settlers of Randolph Co. in the area of Shelby that became Cleveland Co. later. Perhaps this James was a brother to the John born 1770s. (This is just a big guess don't print it as proof!)

Eli Partain m Mary Ann McCoy in Greene Co TN. Moved to Hamilton Co. TN. Had children, but no sons who survived to carry on family name. Mary Ann was married as a McCoy but is said to have been a Borden in reality. Going through his daughter's families, most of them used the "Partain" spelling in their records.

Candace/Candas Parton m George Washington Crumb/Crum in Greene Co. TN. On 1850 Greene Co Census. On later censuses in Cocke Co TN. Albert Huston Parton, son of Moses above, disappeared for years after the Civil War (Union like the majority of people from East TN) hiding from his wife with whom he did not get along, Sarah Evans Parton who lived in Emerts Cove, Sevier Co., TN. She said that his family had told her that he was dead and that before that he had lived at his Uncle Wash Crum's, near the Nolichuckey River. (He was alive and just wanted her to think that he was dead!) (Please send me any info on a Moses Parton any spelling anywhere in the US from 1850 to the early 1900s!)The Partons lived on both sides of the Nolachuckey River. The area appears to have been read on the 1830 Cocke Co. census with all the same surrounding families (farms not moved!) being read on the 1840 Greene Co. TN census.

Irene/Irena/Serena Parton m John Hicks and lived in Cocke Co. TN. Her marriage was not listed in Greene Co. TN so she probably married in Cocke Co., and those records were burned in a courthouse fire in the 1880s.

possibly James Partin who was on 1840 Burke Co. NC census in Crooked Creek beside Ira Phipps, and not too far from John and Randall above. In 1850 James Parton and wife Isabelle Edmiston / Edmundson were in Walker Co. Ga, at Lafayette. In 1850 Ira Phipps had moved to Greene Co. TN, and some of his descendants ended up in Cocke Co. TN. Many of James's descendants are still in Walker Co. GA. I think they use the Partin spelling. (DNA evidence from a descendant of James shows no match whatsoever to other Partons (any spelling) in the project. We need to test ofther descendants of James. Right now he is ruled out.)

Previous lists had an Elizabeth who married a Whaley, but she was a daughter of Richard Evans and Catherine Emert. Three of the daughters (Elizabeth's sisers) of Richard and Catherine married three Partons, two sons of Benjamin and one son of Moses. Somehow this caused confusion and had Elizabeth listed incorrectly as a Parton by some researchers.

There was a Riley Parton on the 1850 Greene Co. TN census who has no known connection to this family. His wife was a Day. I believe that he was brother of James Parton of War Creek, Hawkins (later Hancock) Co. TN who went to Greene Co. MO (later Christian Co.) in the 1840s. Riley may have been a cousin of this above bunch, but if so they had separate migration routes for quite a long time.

It has been my experience that none of the spellings have been intentional choices. Dolly's ancestor Benjamin Christopher {B.C. or Chris} Parton served for a short time until dessertion in the Union forces of the Civil War. He eventually was able to get a small pension in his very elderly years when requirements seem to have been relaxed. A case manager from the pension office asked in writing how his name was spelled "Parton" or "Partain." He replied that he didn't know; that he was not a scholar.

I pay very little attention to spelling or the arguments concerning spelling. James Parton the famous biographer (also from England but many generations later coming to Amercica) wrote in his biography of Andrew Jackson that almost no one could spell correctly back them. Life of Jackson, Vol. I which can be read at books.google.com:
In speaking of Andrew Jackson's poor spelling, he wrote, "Few men of his day, and no women, were correct spellers. Indeed, we may say, that all the illustrious men have been bad spellers, except those who could not spell at all. The scrupulous exactness in that respect; which is now so common, was scarcely known three generations ago."

(This book was published in 1859.)

There is no correct spelling for Parton,Partain, Parten, etc. It is whatever each family ended up with. As in Dolly's family, John's descendants go by Parton (Sevier Co. TN and environs), Partain (Pope and Yell Co. AR and environs, and Partin in Nodaway Co. MO. Etc.

It does appear that in this particular straight line, that it was spelled "Parton" in England even back into the 1600s, even though we don't have that exact link yet.

The following is the Parton (all spellings) DNA website. I will be in the next few months spending many hours getting a better, more informative website designed which will give much more information.

Please forgive any typos. I am afraid to mess witht his reply, afraid I will lose it!

Doris Noland Parton
1042 Stones Throw LN.
Sevierville, TN 37876
tenntree@peoplepc.com

I just did a huge reply, spent a couple of hours on it, hit some hot key and it disappeared. So I will start again.

I am sorry that you though I was rude. I just deal with facts and try to correct errors before they get spread around and falsely accepted as truths.

There was no 1780 census for TN. Tennessee became a state in 1796. The first census available for the counties in East TN is 1830. The others were destroyed in the War of 1812 when the British burned much of Washington, D.C.

As my kids' direct line was in NC until the 1820s, it doesn't make much difference to their line. There was a Robert Parton fond on some record in Blount Co. (not a census, and not designated as an Indian. He was no longer there by the time the censuses are available. He seems to have been the line of some of the Partons around Soddy Daisy, Hamilton Co., TN. There is no indication that he relates to the specific line that I work.

I never told a story that Dolly changed her name to a "O" spelling when she became famous. Her birthcertificate and all records on her are "Parton." That is the accepted spelling in Sevier Co. TN. Her ancestor Benjamin had a brother George Gabriel or Gabriel George Partain whose descendants coming out of Pope and Yell Co. AR use their accepted spelling of "Partain." Benjamin and Gabriel had a brother John who went to Nodaway Co. MO. The accepted speldling there was "Partin."

I can only trace via definite paper trail my children to John Parton born circa mid 1770s in VA. The only time that we know for sure that we had him on a record was 1840 Greene Co. TN beside his son Benjamin. John's wife is completely unknown. One time I wrote that her name might have been "....." and that was a serious mistake because a name that I invented started being passed around as truth and has made it into one or more books like a fact. That was the worst mistake I ever made in genealogy.

John appears to have died between 1840 and 1850. He was living beside his son Benjamin in 1840 Greene Co. TN. In 1850 Benjamin was in Murray Co. GA and his father and mother were nowhere to be found in any state. Also between 1850 and 1860 Benjamin's brother Randall and his wife passed away. We have a newspaper article from the late 1880s in Cocke Co. TN (this county abuts the area in question) that lists that Partons and Goodsons are buried at Caney Branch Cemetery. This is the area in which the Partons lived. Randall was married to a Goodson. These Partons lived on both sides of the Nolichuckey River. This cemetery is in ruins so I cannot prove that John and his wife were buried there or that Randall and his wife were buried there, but it seems to be likely. I have visited this cemetery which is being restored as much as possible.
Randall's children lived in this area after their parents died with the Gooodson maternal grandparents.

It is only via DNA that I can show that my children's Partons match the proven descendants of Robert Partin/Parton who came to Jamestown in 1609. I think their direct line started in Jamstown, filtered into Pittsylvania Co. VA then Old Montgomery Co. VA (Big Reed Island Creek off of New River), and into the Western mountain families of NC. Some of John's sons were in Burke (now McDowell Co.) NC in the 1820s to 1840s.

There are plenty of records online of families who can prove their direct descend from Robert I, to Robert II, to Robert III, etc.
http://www.partinfamily.org/RobertSr/RobertIII.htm

We have one person in our project who has a proven line to Robert.

Early records for Robert and his descendants do exist. He is one of the few (50 some?) people who survived the starving time. He is listed as an Ancient Planter.
http://www.ancientplanters.org/list.htm?v=P

the home page is:
http://www.ancientplanters.org/

Now the best way to work on your James Monroe Partain is to find him on the 1860 census in Morgan Co. AL.

There is no "Partain" listed for 1860 Morgan Co. AL.

There is a James Parton listed.

1860 Morgan Co. AL

15 June 1860

P.O. Decatur

105 97

James P. Preston 49 stonecutter $1000 $4000 born Penn
Frankey T.? 42 housewife AL
Sarah J. 15 AL
James 15? AL
Miles Wade 24 carpenter Tenn
Jasper Wade 30? carpenter Tenn
Pleasant Wade 22 carpenter Tenn
James Thomas 22 carpenter Tenn
James Jones 26 Penn
Joseph Gunn? 20 merchant $3000 Tenn
Thomas Gunn 33 clerk Tenn
James Parton 18 laborer Alabama

This makes sense that this is your James as he is the only Parton any spelling listed in 1860 Morgan Co. and there are definitely rocks involved in a stone cutting operation!

On the 1840 census of Morgan Co. AL there were no Partains, but two Parton families, headed by John and James on page 17.
http://www.genealogyshoppe.com/almorgan/1840.htm#P

Although we have Partons there (by that spelling) in 1840 and 1860, I am not finding any by any spelling in 1850. Perhaps they were in the adjoining counties.

I found this info online. If it is correct, a male direct line descendant of your line should match my childrens:

Ancestors of James Monroe Partain?
Posted by: Gene (Partain) Roehlkepartain Date: March 31, 2001 at 18:18:44
In Reply to: Re: Partain-Faulkville, Alabama to Texas by Greg Johnson of 598

I am also a descendant of James Monroe Partain through William Daniel Partain, my great grandfather.

If my information is correct, James Monroe is buried in the Cooper Cementery, 3 miles west
of Lacon in Morgan County, Alabama. I have conflicting information on both his birth and death dates. I'd love any corrections or insights.

I have family lore that he fought in the Civil War for the South. He died later when he was hit in the head with a rock.

We have been fishing for information about earlier generations of Partains as well, and I wonder if you have more than we
do--or more accurate information.

Here's what we have:
Daniel's parents were:
Hiram Benjamin Partain (1798-?) and Eveline ______ (ca. 1800 - ???)

Hiram Benjamin Partain's parents were:
Philemon Partain (ca. 1767 - ca. 1825) and Mary ______ (ca. 1835 - ????)

Philemon Benjamin Partain's father was:
John Partain (no dates)

John Partain's father was:
William Partain (no dates)

William Partain's father was:
Samuel Partain (1653 - ??)

Samuel Partain's father was:
Robert Partin Jr. (1624 - ??)

Robert Partin Jr.'s parents were:
Robert Partin (1588 - ??) and Margrett Hayle (1588 - ???)

There's evidence that Robert Partin senior emigrated to Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607 and was a landholder in Virginia. I've seen some records on the internet to give me some confidence in that. But the line from him to Hiram Partain is very sketchy and has great potential for error and speculation. If you have any better information, I'd love to know about it. I'm glad to provide more detail on
some of these that I've done here, if you're interested. I can also give you quite accurate information on descendants of William Daniel Partain who were in Erath County, Texas.

I look forward to hearing.

Gene (Partain) Roehlkepartain

Partain origin???

My mother's maiden name is Partain and no one seems to know the origin of the surname. They went to France and looked in the phone books and there were no Partains there... and my grandfather and his brother asked different genealogists and two said it was Corsican, but who knows if that is right. Is it English, Irish, or anything else? Please if you know, tell me! It would be much appreciated.

First of all, I just want to thank you for replying! I really appreciate it. Unfortunately, no one in my family seems to match up with your ancestors. Where in the United States did your family live? All of mine comes from around Greene County, Arkansas in Marmaduke and Paragould, or in Tennessee.

Where did you find out that it was from France? That's really interesting to hear. I'd be curious to find out! Again, thank you so much!
