Mary Partlow b abt 1800 CT, d 1884; spouse of Conrad Keyser

Portrait and Biographical Record of Kalamazoo, Allegan & Van Buren Counties Michigan, Chicago: Chapman Brothers, 1892.

Mary Partlow b abt 1800 CT, d 1884; spouse of Conrad Keyser
Names: Keyser, Lusk, Partlow, Engel, Parmalee

Page 721 +
ALBERN KEYSER. Among the prosperous and respected citizens of Kalamazoo County, we take pleasure in writing the life history of this gentleman, who is making his home on section ten Oshtemo Township. Conrad Keyser is the name of the father, and he was a native of Pennsylvania where he was born in 1795. His father came from Germany and participated in the Revolutionary War. He died when Conrad was seven years of age, and the lad was then bound out. After serving his employer one year, the neighbors took him away on account of ill treatment. He then worked out until 1812, when he enlisted in the war of that year, going as a substitute, and after serving his time he re-enlisted. He was taken prisoner by the British at Charlotte, on Lake Ontario, but was soon exchanged. From the army he went into Canada and worked in the woods. He was married to Miss Mary Partlow, a daughter of the Rev. Mr. Partlow, a Connecticut minister. The wife died when eighty-four years old, in 1884. She had a wonderful memory and could read well at eighty years of age. Mr Keyser did not remain in Canada long, but moved back to New York State and, settling in the western part, located on one hundred and twenty acres of timbered land and lived in that place until 1829, when he removed to the town of Cambria, Niagara County. He lived there a number of years, but previous to his death, which occurred in 1875, when he was eighty years old, he sold out and moved fifteen miles north of Detroit, Mich.
The subject of this sketch was born October 29, 1819, in Niagara County, N. Y.,and was one of a family of four sisters and six brothers. When twenty one years old, he left the parental roof and started out in life on his own account. September 20, 1840, in Niagara County, N. Y., Mr. Keyser was married to Hannah M. Lusk, a sister of John J. Lusk, of whom a sketch is written elsewhere in this book. He farmed in New York at first, but, in the year 1855, came to Michigan and, arriving here June 6, located in Texas Township, Kalamazoo County, on section 5. Finally he moved to his present location in Oshtemo Township on one hundred and sixty acres of land on section 10; he also owns twenty acres on section 14, in Almena Township, Van Buren County.
Five children have been born to our subject and his estimable wife, only one of whom is now living: Edward James, aged thirty-three years, is married to Rosa E. Engel, a daughter of John and Amelia Engel, farmers of this township. George W. was the name of the oldest son, who lost his life while engaged in his country's service. He enlisted in the Eighth Michigan Cavalry in 1862 and participated in a large number of battles, the most noted being Knoxville. He had a horse shot from under him at Pulaski and was consequently taken prisoner, but while on parole the war closed. He then went to work in the mills and lost his life by straining himself in lifting, causing hemorrhage of the lungs. Arabelle and Isabelle (twins) came next, and Charles. The second-named died in infancy; Arabelle was married, and died at the age of thirty-three years, leaving three children, who were reared by their grandparents and were Ida May, who married Mr. Parmalee and resides in Alamo; Maud and Claude (twins), aged fifteen years, and now living with their grandparents. Charles died when three years of age.” end

Note: I have not yet determined the parents of this Mary PARTLOW.

Alpha Partlow b.1867 Kansas USA. Dtr.of Stephen M. & Lydia A.(nee Crandal)

Alpha Partlow had a child b.@1887, born supposedly in Cowley County,Kansas state, who was known as Frank McGraw,(or other variations such as- Franklin Patrick Owen) but am unable to locate a marriage for Alpha to a McGraw. Maybe they were'nt married?

I do know Alpha possibly married? a Charles Stroud/Strout, probably in Kansas, but they moved to Portland, Oregon area at some time in Frank's youth, as I believe Charles worked for a lumber Company somewhere around Kelso or the Oregon/Washington border area.

I do know Alpha's parents, Stephen & Lydia were married in Grant Co.,Wisconsin, where two of Stephen Partlow's,female Partlow cousins married some McGraw's, but at this stage I can find no connection to any of these McGraw's. Stephen & Lydia, moved to Kansas, where some of the children were born and finally living in Portland, where they died in 1905 & 1919 respectively. Alpha may have already been living in Portland, with Frank, when she met Charles Stroud/Strout.

Alpha's other siblings were - 1. Alice (m. Brown) 2.Phebe (m. Addison Sleeth) 3. George (m. Wolf) 4. Rena 5. Clarence.

I dearly would love to know where my Frank McGraw came from & whom his McGraw father was. Also, when/where Alpha died, and under what surname?

I also seek any info on Alpha's brothers' & sisters' , their marriages, children etc. or any connection with these families whatsoever.
Re: George Franklin Partlow b 30 Apr 1871, a son of George M. and Martha [Osborn] Partlow

Downloaded from books. google.com:

M W Pershing, History of Tipton County, Indiana, Indianapolis: B.F. Bowen & Co., 1914.

Page 588 & 589
"GEORGE F. PARTLOW.

With comparatively little early education and few advantages in life except those wrung by his own force of character, no man in Tipton county has been more prominent as a successful agriculturist and none occupies a more conspicuous place in the esteem of the public as an intelligent and progressive citizen than the well-known gentleman whose brief biography is herewith presented. Genial and courteous, he makes friends wherever he goes, while his industry and sound business methods have won for him success. Personally he is a firm and true friend, and he occupies a conspicuous place in public esteem.

George F. Partlow, the owner of two hundred and forty acres of rich farming land in Jefferson township, Tipton county, Indiana, was born near Marion, Grant county, this state. May i, 1871, the son of George M. and Martha S. (Osborn) Partlow. George M. Partlow was reared in Noblesville and there received his education. He was a soldier in the Civil war, being a member of Company I, Thirty-ninth Indiana Volunteer Infantry, serving for three and one-half years in that memorable conflict, being attached to the Army of the Cumberland and taking part in a great many of the most important battles of the war. He was the father of four children. James R., George F., Joseph C. and David A.

The old Reynolds school house was the scene of the subject's first endeavors to acquire an education, and by studious attention to his books, in spite of the rather meager facilities afforded by the schools of that time, Mr. Partlow acquired a fairly good education, which he has since supplemcnted by reading and close observation, becoming a well informed man of definite and decided opinions. For twenty years he worked out at farm labor and as a result of careful economy and wise management he was then in a position to purchase land of his own, his present splendid landed estate standing as a monument to his well directed efforts. If ever man deserved that good American appellation of "self-made man," Mr. Partlow is eminently entitled to bear it, for everything he possesses in this world is the direct result of his own labors.

Mr. Partlow has been twice married. His first wife was Mrs. Elizabeth (Samuel) Schmehi, whose first husband was deceased and who had one child, Alice, by her former marriage. By the subject's first marriage he 'became the father of three children, Flora, George and Mora. Mr. Partlow's second wife was Pearl M. Blessing.

In political affairs, the subject gives a loyal and active support to the Democratic party, although he has never been disposed to seek political preferment for himself, being content to do his full duty in casting his bal- 'lot in support of the men and principles which he deemed right. Mr. Partlow is one of the most substantial citizens of Jefferson township and is practically the "architect of his own fortune," his example through life being well worthy the imitation of the younger element. Broad minded, patriotic and public-spirited, he has always taken a leading part in the advancement of the growth and prosperity of his township, and has done much toward aiding public works and improvements." END

Frank Orville SALE b 18 Jul 1856 IL, d 10 Apr 1941 Champaign Co., IL m 8 Sep 1881 Lillie Belle PARTLOW.

Biographical Record of Champaign County, Illinois, Chicago: S.J. Clark Publishing Co., 1900.

“FRANK O. SALE, D.D.S., is one of the leading members of his profession in Champaign county, and in Urbana, his native place and present home, he stands especially high. But not alone in a business sense is he deserving of credit, for everything which tends to upbuild and benefit the town and his fellow citizens receives his earnest support.

Rev. John Sale, the paternal grandfather of the Doctor, a son of Anthony Sale, was a native of Virginia, and was a minister of the early Methodist Episcopal church in that state. At an early day he removed to Ohio, where he took a very active part in the organizing of the denomination, and, finally settling near Piqua, Miami county, served as presiding elder for many years, and was the founder of the first Methodist class in Cincinnati. His death occurred January 9, 1827. He had married Nancy, daughter of Frederick Bonner, of Virginia, and her death took place in Green county, Ohio, February 5, 1865. Her father had located in the Buckeye state in 1802 and became the owner of about two thousand acres of land situated in the " military tract." There he developed an excellent homestead and reared a number of children to lives of usefulness.

Rev. F. B. Sale, father of our subject, was born in Green county, Ohio, June 9, 1821, and during his early manhood was engaged in agriculture. In 1853 he came to Illinois, and in 1862 he enlisted in the defense of the Union, as a member of the One Hundred and Twenty-fifth Illinois Infantry. Bravely performing every duty that fell to his share, he was finally promoted to the place of captain, and in that capacity won fresh laurels. The untold hardships and exposure incident to army life made serious inroads upon his health and necessitated his resigning from the service, but he continued to act the part of a devoted patriot, and aided materially in securing recruits for the Federal forces. In 1866 he was ordained a deacon in the Methodist church at Bloomington, and that year was agent for the American Bible Society, traveling in several Illinois counties. In 1871 he was ordained as an elder by Bishop Scott, at Jacksonville, Illinois, and for many years
thereafter he labored actively and efficiently as a minister of the Gospel. During his early residence in this state he was a member of the firm of Campbell, Ater & Sale, of Urbana, later located upon a farm in the northwestern part of this county, and since 1893 has been a resident of Fisher, Champaign county. On the 11th of October, 1899, he and his estimable wife, whose maiden name was Maria Cramer, celebrated the fifty-fifth anniversary of their marriage. She is the daughter of Solomon and Keturah Cramer, of Green county, Ohio, and by her marriage she became the mother of eight children, namely: Willie G., Edwin Cramer, Charles E. , John A., S. Bonner, Frank O., James P. and Fannie M., all of whom are living.

The birth of Dr. Frank O. Sale took place in Urbana, July 18, 1856. He was reared to agriculture and pursued his elementary studies in the district schools. Later he taught for several years, meeting with success, and at length he commenced the study of dentistry under the tutelage of Dr. Briton, of Champaign. In 1880 he opened an office and began the practice of his chosen profession at Rantoul, where he remained for two years. Thence going to Huron, South Dakota, he was actively engaged in dental practice for twelve years, in the meantime rising to a high place in his chosen field of labor. For years he was an honored member of the State Dental Society, of which he was president, secretary and treasurer at different times. He also held the appointment of Governor Melette to a place on the state dentists' examining board for five years, and in all of these official capacities proved himself eminently efficient. A great student, he neglects no opportunity for self-improvement, particularly along the lines of dental science. Politically, he uses his franchise in favor of the Republican party.

The marriage of Dr. Sale and Lillie, daughter of Jesse and Rachel (Davison) Partlow, formerly residents of Vermilion county, Illinois, took place September 8, 1881. Her mother, who died in 1876, aged forty-nine years, and her father, whose
death occurred August 22, 1898, were devout and life-long members of the Methodist Episcopal church. Her sisters, Mary, Ann, Jennie, Ida and Cora, and her brother
Frank are married. Mrs. Sale was a successful teacher in the public schools of Potomac, Illinois, for several years prior to her marriage. The Doctor and wife are the parents of four children, namely: Edna M., a member of the senior class of the Urbana high school; Charlie Partlow; Dwight O., and Cora Virginia. They are active members of the Methodist Episcopal church, the Doctor being a steward, and teacher in the Sunday school, while his wife also teaches and renders material assistance in the various departments of church enterprise. They are highly esteemed by all who know them, and their place in local society could not easily be filled.” End

James M. PARTLOW b 11 Apr 1824 VA, of Oregon

Hines, H. K. "An Illustrated History of the State of Oregon." Chicago: Lewis
Pub. Co. 1893. p. 969.

"HON. JAMES M. PARTLOW

An honored Oregon pioneer of 1850, now residing at Hillsborough, was born
in Virginia, April 11, 1824, a son of Virginia parents. Elijah Partlow, his father, was a soldier in the war of 1812, and Nancy T. (White) Partlow, his mother, was a daughter of Colonel William White, who served as a colonel in the Revolutionary war. Some time after their marriage, his parents moved to Tennessee, and later went from there to Texas. In the latter State they spent the rest of their lives, and died, the father at the age of sixty-five years, and the mother in her fiftieth year. Of their family of eight children only two survive, Mrs. Barlow and the subject of this sketch. The latter was educated in
his native State, and resided with his parents until their death.
In 1847 Mr. Partlow enlisted to serve in the Mexican war, under Colonel Sterling Price, and was all through that war. He participated in the campaign on the Rio Grande, was in several hard-fought battles, and made some air-breadth escapes. The fiercest contest was the battle of Tause, in which Company K, to which Mr. Partlow elonged, lost one-eighth of its men. On one occasion he, with nine others, was detailed to take care of a number of horses of the company in the mountains, and while there they learned that the Mexican Rangers were coming to attack them. Our young friend and his party knew if they were taken it would be sure death. He was chosen commander of their number and undertook to lead them from the mountains to the American army. On the way they had to go down a steep mountain side that was covered with snow, on which the horses were unable to retain their footing. He ordered the men to take the bridles off, leave the saddles on, and drive the horses out on the slanting mountain side. The horses, as soon as they reaches a place where the slant becomes abrupt, fell and on their sides went sliding down the mountain, at the foot of which they were caught and re-mounted. Reaching a Mexican town further on, they demanded food, but were denied it. The order was given to cock and trail arms, and in this way they bravely rode through the town. Later, they had to swim their horses across the Rio Grande, and at midnight, while still pressing forward, heard in English the words "Halt! Advance and give the countersign!" and were overjoyed to learn they had reached the outpost of the
American army. During this journey they subsisted on a small allowance of parched corn. At the close of the war Mr. Partlow was honorably discharged at Fort Leavenworth.
In 1850 the subject of our sketch hitched up two yoke of cows, and in company with Mr. James Austin, crossed the plains to Oregon. When they reached the Cascade mountains they found 100 emigrants, men, women and children, whose journey had been impeded by mountain snows. Mr. Partlow and his partner passed them, made their way on to Oregon, there loaded pack animals with provisions and with volunteers from Oregon returned to render the emigrants assistance. After their arrival in the valley, Mr. Partlow's pocketbook contained just 30 cents. In Oregon City he met and became acquainted with Mr. John Rogers, at whose home he remained two months. In the spring he went to Yreka, California, where, in partnership with his brother-in-law, Judge White, he engaged in mining, which enterprise proved a successful one. During his mining experience the largest piece of gold he found was about the size of a turkey egg. Previous to his coming West, Captain Partlow had had some experience in boating on the Missouri river, and while he was in the mines, Captain Brazell, the great steamboat man of that day, wrote him to come to Oregon City and run the Oregon. This he did. After running this vessel some time he took command of the Gazelle, and later, was engaged in steamboating east of the mountains, on the Columbia and Snake rivers. After a most successful career as a steamboat captain, he turned his attention to investments in land, in which he also met with marked success. Realizing the fact that Vancouver, British Columbia, was bound to grow, he obtained letters of recommendation from Ladd & Tilton, of Portland, and First National Bank of East Portland, went to Vancouver and made purchases of real estate, the recent increased values of which prove the wisdom of his foresight.
The Captain now has large real-estate holdings in Portland and various other places on the Pacific coast. His home is one of the prettiest little cottages in the city of Hillsborough, and in it, retired from active business, he is
spending the evening of his useful life.
On the 5th of November, 1871, Captain Partlow was married to Mrs. Louisa Barrett, of East Portland, widow of John Barrett. The Captain and Mrs. Partlow have one son, James William.
Captain Partlow has been a life-long Democrat, but is now independent in
his political views. In January, 1874, he was elected a member of the Oregon State Legislature, from Washington county, and while in the Legislature he served the interests of his constituents to the best of his ability and in a manner that reflected credit on himself. He is a good representative Oregon pioneer of 1850. Long may he continue to enjoy life in the State of his choice and adoption." end

*******************

Submitted to the Oregon Bios. Project in March 2006 by Diana Smith. Submitter
has no additional information about the person(s) or family mentioned above.

Hello,
I'm looking for information about my 2 great grandmother Frances Partlow born 1796 d 1892 in Quebec. She married William Dalgliesh and they lived in Huntingdon, Quebec. If your information ties in at all with these facts, I'd really appreciate hearing from you as I haven't had any luck finding out where she was born, where/when they married, who her family were.

Looking for info on a Horatio N. Partlow b. ca 1835 Quebec (not to be confused with the Horation Partlow b. VT about the same time).
His mother was Maria M. TRYON. He was in Bombay, Franklin Co, NY in 1850, living with his uncle and aunt Daniel B. SMITH and Susan TRYON SMITH. I think he was the same one reported in St Lawrence Co, NY as having died in 1922 at Salisbury, Addison Co, VT...but not sure. His wife was Sarah M, also b. Quebec

I have an original oval studio portrait in a 5”x7” frame, identified as “Oris Partlow – Jan 7, 1900”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photo was taken in Indianapolis (Marion Co.) IN, and he looks to be about age 20.

I found an Orris Portlow in the 1900 Indianapolis census, born Jan 1881, a blacksmith, living with his mother, Martha A. Partlow. There is an ORA Partlow, with Feb 1881 birthdate, also living in Indianapolis, son of William H. and Arrina E. Partlow.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to “Oris” Partlow.

Leslie,

I would love to compare info with you! My line is Elijah/Elisa, Benjamin, John II, John I. I noticed however that Elijah and Frances Menefee also named a son Elisa. I have some varying information on an Elisa S. Partlow, and am wondering if anyone has middle name or middle initial information? If anyone has additional Partlow information on this line that they wouldn't mind sharing I would love to take a look. And am happy to return the favor!

I am searching for more information on the parents of Monsieur Partlow who was born 19 Aug 1879 and died 22 March 1954. He resided in South River, Warren, Virginia most of his life (Browntown), and is buried in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Front Royal, Virginia. I have hit a wall with finding out more information regarding his parents, I only have info that his mother's name MAY have been Mary.

I'd also appreciate any information that might be had regarding his wife, Mary Nellie Updike/Partlow who was born around 1887 in Virginia as well.

I appreciate any information anyone can share!

His father was Eli Partlow, mother was Augusta P. We have a family tree listed on Ancestry.com under Davis family tree. She has a few George Washington Partlows in her ancestry.
