Your grandfather was the youngest son of John Pascoe. John Pascoe was one of the sons of Richard Allen Pascoe of Cornwall, England. He had several children. He immigrated from Cornwall prior to the American Civil war to Canada. He was there for a few years, then he and some of his children moved to the United States, approximately 1863. I will try to find out which province in Canada they settled in. Richard Allen Pascoe was a farmer by trade. Pascoe is a common name in England. Kind of like Smith or Jones. Family names are Richard, George, David, Elmer and Charles, Henry and a few others. Your great-great grandfather was married at least twice. His second wife was named Nellie Eastman, an indentured servant from England. That lady was your Great-great Grandmother. I believe Emma was his first wife.
Your grandfather told me he had at least 7 uncles.
Uncle George

Re: William Pascoe - Landscape and Animal Artist

Hello,

I have come across message board comments by you on the "ancestry.co.uk" website. I see you made these comments back in 2003 and 2006. You are asking about a Willam Pascoe, born in 1827 in Plymouth, Devon.

I actually googled W.Pascoe, so I'm not sure if your William Pascoe is the same person. My parents have a large oil painting, which has been on the wall for years in their hall. We are having the hall re-decorated, so the painting is off the wall, and I have just been looking at it closely. It is very dirty and really needs to be professionally cleaned, but it seems to be by a "W.Pascoe...Richmond August 1845". It is a painting of shire horses.

I'm not sure that it is by your "William Pascoe", because if he was born in 1827 he would only have been 18 years old, and it certainly doesn't seem to be a painting by such a very young person. Also, was your William Pascoe in Richmond, or have you any knowledge if he ever went there? I guess there are several "Richmond's"...I know of Richmond in Yorkshire and there is Richmond in Surrey. There may well be others as well...maybe there's evan a Richmond in Devon, but I can't find one.

My father is dead, and my mother seems to think that my grandfather bought the painting as he used to keep Shire Horses, as he liked them very much. We certainly did keep Shire horses in the family, so that part is undoubtedly true.

Anyway, if you have any more information, I'd love to have it.

Kind Regards,

Stuart Surridge.
1884 murder of James PASCOE in Grass Valley, California, USA

Receiving no answer to his repeated knockings, and seeing that the door was partly open, he stepped inside, and found Pascoe lying on the floor, near the door, in a pool of blood. James called in a passer-by, and upon examining the body, it was found that he had been stabbed in the breast, in the region of the heart, the wound being about three inches in depth. It was also found that he had another ugly wound behind the left ear, which had probably been inflicted with some blunt instrument, and had crushed in the skull. The murder was undoubtedly for the purpose of robbery, as it was found that the house had been thoroughly ransacked for plunder. Pascoe, when found was in his underclothing, and had slippers on his feet, though no stockings, which would go to show that he had arisen from his bed to answer his assassin's knock. Pascoe was a native of Cornwall, Eng., a widower, about 65 years of age, and was not known to have any enemies here, where he had lived for many years. The murderer left no clue as to who he was.

Source: Philadelphia Inquirer, June 8, 1874, page 2

Arrest of a Horse Thief.

John Pascoe, a resident of Camden was arrested in that place on Saturday afternoon by Reserve Officer Ulmsted. It appears that Pascoe, on the 5th of March, hired a horse and carriage from the livery stable of Mr. C. Volz, No. 200 Halsey street, Newark, N. J. He drove to this city and sold the property, which was recovered on last Thursday by Reserve Officer Ulmsted. Two months afterward he perpetrated a similar offense upon Mr. McCormick, proprietor a livery stable at the same place. The accused declares that the horse in question died about eight miles from Camden; the buggy, harness and lap robe, however, he sold, and they have not been heard from.

On Sunday, May 31, Pascoe returned to Newark and applied for another team at the stable of Mr. George Engleborn. This he also drove to Philadelphia and sold. The conveyance was recovered on Saturday evening by Officer Umstead. The prisoner will have a hearing at the Central Station to-day at two o'clock.

Have you obtained a death certificate and/or obituary for Thomas H? If you don't have an exact death date, you can ask for a 10 year search from the Pennsylvania Division of Vital Statistics. There are alot of online Cornish resources if you could get the name of his parents which should be provided on a death certificate. PASCOE, however, is a very common surname in Cornwall. My family of PASCOEs was from Camborne, Cornwall and my branch (by then YEATS) ended up in Pennsylvania.

Best wishes,
Karen

Hi

Go to rootsweb.com go to MAILING LISTS. Go to find a List. type in Pascoe.Click onto Pascoe in lefthand corner.

Try SEARCH the Archives--you might find what you want there in past messages but it hasn't been used very much. You can click subscribe[free] and you will get all the messages that come in the future.

However I would suggest that you also Look for Cornish-Gen and subscribe to that.Get the feel for the messages that come in and then put your own message in asking for help. Also try Search the Archives. You might find info that you want there.

Message Boards are very much one to one and no one else really reads them

hope this helps

Sue

My mother in Law is a Pascoe but I think she is the end of her particular line.

Are you aware of John Pascoe who was a solicitor in Barnstaple, Devon, UK? His dates are c. 1831 to 1871. He married into money (Agnes Harding: 1838 to 1919) - the Harding family in Barnstaple - and then moved to Bath. He had three sons James, Wallis and Mydhope and one daughter, Amy, who was the UK Ladies Golf Champion in 1896!

I can tell you more but if you could come back to me I would be very grateful.

Thanks,

Ian
