Hi Wendy

I don't think I can help you here as I don't have an Elizabeth from 1810 or thereabouts anywhere amongst my family. I remain keen to work out how all the Passeys fit together, though as they all seem to originate within a small area.

Helen

Hello Wendy,

I had a look through my records, and do not have a missing Elizabeth in my bunch.

I did a bit of checking to try and pick up Elizabeth b. 1810 in Worcester (IGI, World Connect and even the Old Bailey proceedings) and nothing likely comes up.

Have you been looking quite a while for your Elizabeth? Was she transported?

Jennifer

Hello David,

Yes - thanks! I'm still working on the Passeys.

I have seen this record for John Passey chr. 28 April 1771 in Thornbury - to parents Thomas Passey and Sarah Jones.

There is another that could also be a possible - John Passey chr. 9 Sep 1770 also in Thornbury - to parents Philip Passey and Elizabeth.

I don't know which one to go with. If one follows the naming conventions, it makes sense that Thomas is the father of John - as the name Thomas and John follow on down this line - but so does the name Philip.

John Passey and Jane have sons with both names, Thomas (first born) and Philip (later on down the siblings)

Any suggestions?

Jennifer

Hi Jennifer

Looking at my records I think we have both encountered the same problem!

The furthest back I have been able to get (with any degree of certainty) with my Passey forebears is to the Cleobury Mortimer area in the mid C18. I am as clear as I can be that a Passey family was living there, headed up by one John and his wife Elizabeth and that their (youngest?) son Samuel left CM and moved to Twyning in Gloucestershire - this is over 40 miles away, so must have been a major undertaking at the time. Samuel spent the rest of his life there, and I am descended from him.

However, there appear to have been 5 other sons and probably some daughters too. What is striking is that later Passeys are found in some numbers in locations in Shropshire and Herefordshire, not too far from Cleobury Mortimer, and around an area where Passey remains a (relatively) common name. I have never been able to establish a link between my branch of the family and the Much Marcle Passeys or the Bromfield Passeys, but in all my researches they keep popping up and my conjecture is that either they are linked to one or more of the other brothers or that there is a link through an earlier generation.

Please let me know what you think. I'm also on 'genes' where again my efforts at tracking down other Passeys have been largely unsuccessful!

Helen

Helen

Hello HC,

Delighted to receive your note this morning - it's been a bit since I looked at the 'Passey puzzle'.

I don't know how deep your research goes, but would be interested in any reflections you might have about them.

I have a bit of background on my search.

I have a Mary Passey, b. 1842 in Eye, Hereford, who married into my main line of Edgar (based in Wigan, Lancashire, but who made a foray into Glamorgan, Wales where he and Ann were married in Jun 1870). Don't know why Mary was in Wales.

Mary's father was Thomas, b. 1815 in either Onibury or Bromfield (depending on which census you look at), married Elizabeth (Jones) Bennett in 1838 in Ludford, Shropshire.

Thomas' parents were John Passey and Eleanor Griffiths, both b. in 1791 and both in Bockleton, Worcs. They married 1812 in Wigmore, Hereford. They lived for some time in the Bromfield, Onibury, Stokesay area of Shropshire - but are then found in Bockleton again in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census(s).

John's father was John Passey, b abt. 1770 and Jane, b abt 1766 in Hampton Charles (near Bockleton).

You are the first person to reply to my note posted to ancestry.com. I am also listed with Genes Reunited, and have corresponded with two others interested in Passeys - so far with no connection between any of them.

There is one group which has origins in Thornbury/Collington, and then relocates to Much Marcle/Dymock. The person's name I corresponded with on this group was named 'Leslie'.

The second group is much more extensive, ranging a bit east from 'my' group - but also overlapping - from the west Bucknell - Clunbury - Clungunford - Leintwardine - Wigmore- south to Kingsland - and and northeast including Onibury - Bromfield - Stanton Lacy. Although I corresponded with an 'Edward' about these folks - we could not find a connection between either my John b. abt. 1770 or John b. 1791.

So - I don't know where your information has lead you in regard to the above - but, as I said, if you have some reflection on all of that - I would love to hear from you again.

Best regards, Jennifer

John Passey b. ab.t 1792, probably in Hereford or Shropshire (Bromfield/Ludlow/Wigmore - these towns are very close to each other),
married on 21 Apr 1812 in Wigmore, Herefordshire to Eleanor Griffiths. She was b. abt. 1794.

They had a son, Thomas, b. 1815 in Bromfield, Shropshire. He was married 20 Nov 1838 in Ludford, Shropshire to Elizabeth Bennett. She was b. abt. 1814 in Leintwardine, Herefordshire.

Thomas and Elizabeth Passey had a daughter, Mary, b. Feb 1842 in Eye, Herefordshire. She married Joseph Thomas EDGAR Juen 1870 qtr in Newport M, Glamorgan Gwent, Wales.

Does anyone have any connection to these Passeys?

Edward Passey Hounslow Middlesex

Dear All,

I am trying to find out information for one Edward Passey. He married Mary Coventry in 1854 at Abingdon, Oxfordshire. The marriage certificate told me his father was Jonathan Passey. According to the England 1881 census he was born in Hounslow, Middlesex in ca. 1831. He was listed as 50 on the census, which was in Oxford. Most of the Passey line leading to Edward Passey were born in the Oxford area, so the clues run cold. I don't know when he moved to Oxford or who his mother is. On the 1881 census he is listed as a Dealer & Paper Maker employing 4 men and 2 women. He died in 1892.

If anyone has information on his birth and who his mother is this will be greatly received. Thank you.

Simon
