Family Tree DNA is offering a Holiday Season promotion which will bring back the discount that they offered this summer for the Y-DNA37:

Y-DNA37 – promotional price $119 (reg. price $149) [now only $20 more than a 12-marker test]
Y-DNA67 – promotional price $209 (reg. price $239)
mtDNAPlus – promotional price $139 (reg. price $149)
SuperDNA – promotional price $488 (reg. price $665)

Orders for the above tests need to be placed and paid for by December 31, 2009 to receive the sale price.

I particularly encourage everyone who knows any potential members to inform them of this special discounted price for the 37-marker test which is now less expensive than the current price of $124 for only a 25-marker test. This is also a great opportunity to purchase a gift kit for a relative during this holiday season, a gift which could live for generations to come.

You can order this kit by going to our website at www.familytreedna.com/public/pate-dna-project/ Click on REQUEST TO JOIN THIS GROUP at the upper left of that page.

If there are any questions or I can provide more information, please let me know.

A.
Do any of you have any information on what happened to Mahala McCown Pate after her divorce from Jackson Pate? Has anyone got a copy of the divorce papers?

I have some suspicion that she married around 1828, SC native Benjamin C. Franklin, had a son born in MS in 1829, and then they moved to Clark Co., OH by 1830.

Hi,
My Pate family was in Pickens Alabama..Gordo, Reform and in Tuscaloosa..Buhl and Romulus Alabama.
My Great grandmother went by the name of Jo or Anna ..a shortening of her name of JoAnna. She was born 23 Oct 1893 in Alabama.
At the age of 16 in 1909 she married my great grandfather John Asbury Free born 23 Feb 1881.
He had kids from prior marriage named
Lucy Free born 1904.
Houston Free born 1906.
Albert Free born 1908.

Also, at the time of the 1910 census in Alabama they were living in Crossland, Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

John Free and my Pate great grandmother later had children.
Arvin Free born abt 1912.
Euline Free born abt 1919.
A set of twins named John Hester Free and Willie(Willis) Vester Free born 19 Aug 1920.

John Hester Free married Virginia Windham (sp?) 26 March 1966 in Alabama, he passed away in 1990 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
Willie (Willis) Vester Free married Mary Eunice Burnette and he passed away in 1980 while in Springdale, Arksnsa.

I found the family in 1930 census living in Bostic, Pickens, Alabama where Jo(Annna) went by the name of Joe A.Free on the census. Where as on the 1910 census they have her listed as Ann Free.

I have been trying to locate great grandmother Pate's family in Alabama.

From what I found on census records in Pickens Co. Alabama..
Jo (Anna) Pate and both of her parents were born in Alabama.

I also recently have been told that Jo(Anna) had a brother that was called Drew...not sure if he is older or younger than Jo (Anna).

From the Alabama Social Security Death Index I found out that Jo(Ann)Pate Free was listed as Anna Free and that she was in Buhl in 1982 when she passed away. It also mentioned Romulus, Alabama and Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

I'm trying to locate who are Jo(Anna) Pate and Drew Pate's parents as well as any other siblings of these two. Also what was Jo(Anna)'s full name correctly?

Please if any of this sounds familiar please contact me at
FAMULAREDM@aol.com or call me at 419-465-8414.

This line has held me at a major standstill for quite awhile.

Some interesting new information on Col. Thomas Pate

In my continuing quest to link Pate families in colonial Virginia to Pate families in England, I recently came across some interesting new information on Col. Thomas Pate which I had not known previously.

We are all aware of the British custom of naming their homes and manors, and that tradition was continued by many colonists in Virginia. I had always wondered what name was given to the home, and perhaps plantation, of Col. Thomas Pate in Gloucester County. I have found that his home was named Gloucester Hall. When the newly-appointed Royal Governor of Virginia, Baron Francis Howard, arrived in February 1684, he made his permanent residence at Gloucester Hall for much of his stay in Virginia. "For much of his stay in Virginia, [Howard of Effingham] lived at Pate's home, known as Gloucester Hall, on the banks of Poropotank Creek." Ref.: "The Papers of Francis Howard, Baron Howard of Effingham, 1643-1695", p. 78, edited by Warren M. Billings, Virginia State Library, 1989.

I had known that Gov. Howard had initially made his residence in Gloucester Hall, but was unaware of the extent of his stay. In a very strange twist of fate, it was necessary for Gov. Howard to seek residence because the governor's mansion in Jamestown had been severely damaged during Bacon's Rebellion. And Gloucester Hall was the very same home where Nathaniel Bacon, leader of the rebellion, had died in 1676! It was through the friendship of Gov. Howard with Thomas' father, Edward Pate, a London merchant, that arrangements were made for his stay in Thomas' home.

Then fate took even a stranger twist in August 1685, when the wife of Gov. Howard, Lady Philadelphia Pelham Howard, died at only age 30 in Gloucester Hall. The leader of Bacon's Rebellion against the royal governor of Virginia, died in Gloucester Hall, and, only nine years later, the wife of a newly-appointed royal governor, Lady Philadelphia, died in that same house! Ref.: Ibid., p. 229.

I also learned in letters from Howard to his wife, before her arrival in Virginia, that Thomas had a serious romantic interest in Jane Sewell Calvert, a young widow, married only one year, with no children. To quote an April 1684 letter (original spelling): "Since my last to you Col. Pates hath informed me of some Intentions, and thoughts he hath of marrying. If he doe she is a very fine woman, and great fortune 3000 [British pounds], My Lord Baltemore Ladys daughter, the Chancellors of Marylands widow but 20 years old never a child. He had some discourse with her and Lord, and Lady Baltemore when he was there the last weeke, had great Encourangement from them all." Ref.: Ibid., p. 77. As we know, this marriage never happened unfortunately, because he later married an Elizabeth (surname unknown) of Gloucester County, which as we also know was not a happy union. Interestingly, Gov. Howard never writes of this marriage which could indicate that he was not too impressed by its lack of felicity nor with her.

If interested in colonial Virginia, especially during the life and times of Thomas Pate, I highly recommend the above-referenced book and also "Virginia's Viceroy, Their Majesties' Governor General, Francis Howard, Baron Howard of Effingham", by Warren M. Billings, George Mason University Press, 1991. Dr. Billings has written several other books on colonial Virginia and appears to be the leading authority on that subject.

I would like to hear from anyone who has documentation proving that they are descendants of Col. Thomas Pate.

A. J. Pate
Group Administrator
Pate DNA Project

Reeves and Pate associations, 1770-1800, SC-Georgia

I just posted the following on the Reves and Reeves forums on Rootsweb (and Reeves on Genforum):

Is anyone aware of any associations of the Reeves/Reves family with the Pate family through marriages or migrations together from about 1770 to 1800 in South Carolina, from 1800 to 1820 in Georgia, and 1820 to 1850 in Alabama?

I am inquiring because my gg-grandfather Newell Walton Pate had a brother or cousin named Lewis Reves Pate who was born c. 1804 in Georgia. I know Newell was named after a man named Newell Walton, and I suspect it is the same case for Lewis.

I would appreciate any information anyone could provide.

A.
A DNA success story from the Wall Street Journal

In the current issue of "Facts & Genes", 8-21-09, a newsletter published by Family Tree DNA, there is a brief reference to an article in the Wall Street Journal about one of FTDNA's customers who had successfully discovered his birth father after a 26-year search through DNA analysis.

The article was published by the WSJ on May 2, 2009, titled "Family Secrets: An Adopted Man's 26-Year Quest for His Father", with a subtitle of "Richard Hill Uses Latest DNA Techniques And Lots of Shoe Leather to Solve a Riddle". The link to the article is: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124121920060978695.html

Though this was a story involving an adoption, the same diligence and persistence of Richard Hill could be applied to your own searches for links to elusive ancestors, especially the brickwall blocking your research.

"Facts & Genes" is a free email newsletter available to any interested person, which provides valuable information and a better basic understanding of DNA. You do not have to be a customer or a project member to subscribe. A subscription also gives you access to all their back issues.
John Pate 1677-1706, Gloucester County, Virginia

John Pate was the oldest son of Col. Thomas Pate who died in Yorktown in 1703. Relatively little seems to be known about his life. Below I will present a timeline of his life and some additional information. To the best of my knowledge, this represents the most complete and comprehensive study on John Pate.

I would appreciate any information which could be provided to help answer the following questions:

1. What was the name of John's wife, and what is known about her?

2. What are the names of John's children? Only one child is known, and that is Sarah Pate who married Col. Wilson Cary, whose father Miles Cary was a member of the Council of State. (See more below.) I assume that he had no sons since his 2100-acre plantation did not go to a Pate son after his death.

3. Does anyone have a copy of his will? There are several references to a will (see below). It is interesting that he left a will at all, since he was only 29 years old when he died.

4. What connections did he have to John Wills, or connections of the Pate family to the Wills family?

There is a plausible explanation why John Pate received recognition at such an early age. He was fourth generation of a family that had been prominent in Virginia, both in Gloucester County and colonial governemnt, and had inherited a large family estate. Many wealthy Virginia planters sent their sons back to England for education, and I believe the scholarly books in the Cary family's Ceelys Library, previously owned by John Pate, indicates that he had been well-educated.

A. J. Pate

_____________________________

TIMELINE OF JOHN PATE 1677-1706

1677 John, the first child of Col. Thomas and Elizabeth Pate, born on April 27, Abingdon Parish Register, Gloucester County, Virginia

1703 His father, Col. Thomas Pate died, about age 53.

1704 John owned 1100 acres on the Gloucester Rent Roll, Petsworth Parish, and 1000 acres on the King and Queen County Rent Roll. This was the Pate Plantation that his father Thomas inherited from his uncle John. John apparently inherited the plantation by primogeniture.

1705 The vestry of Petsworth Parish, Gloucester County, selected John Pate as a vestryman to replace a deceased member on October 3. John must have been an impressive young man, since he was only 28 years old. This was a position of honor and responsibility and said to be "represented by gentlemen still living upon their ancestral estates".

1706 The Council of State appointed John Pate as a Justice of the Peace for Gloucester County, March 28, along with Thomas Read and Phillip Smith.

1706 John Pate is shown as a vestryman in the vestry book at its next meeting on April 23. Then at the next meeting recorded, John Pate was reported as deceased.

1706 At the next meeting vestry meeting recorded, John Pate was reported as deceased. Tragically, he was only 29 years old, dying between April 23 and October 9 of 1706.

1715 "Aug 16: John Wills: King and Queen County: 130 acres together with a little island being included adjoining to a tract of land devised to said Wills by John Pate, in his last will. Bounded by the main creek of Poropotank." Land Patents # 10 1710-1719 pg 243 on reel 10: Library of Virginia Archives Section.

c. 1728 John's daughter, Sarah c.1705-1783, married Col. Wilson Cary c.1701-1772, scion of a prominent and wealthy family. Their second daughter, Mary, was thought to be George Washington's "first sweetheart".

1744 On August 30, "Records of Colonial Gloucester County, Virginia", refers to "1141 acs. granted to Wingfield Webb & Richard Pate, Gentlemen, 1650, and by divers conveyances assigned to Wilson Cary".

_____________________________

Published references to John Pate

This John Pate is possibly the father of Mrs. Wilson Cary. I have in my library several volumes bearing the autograph "John Pate, 1706," on the title page above that of Colonel Wilson Cary (possibly his son-in-law), and to increase the probabilities, I would add, that I have also a volume showing in like manner the signature of Colonel Thomas Milner, and beneath it that of his son-in-law, Colonel Miles Cary. Now Colonel Wilson Cary in his will devises to his son lands lying on both sides of Poropotank, in the counties of Gloucester and King and Queen. These Gloucester lands, it is true, may have been subsequent purchases, and thus my theory that Colonel Cary acquired them through marriage might be untenable, still there is nothing to show that Miles Cary may not have been induced to invest in these very lands by the fact of his elder brother already having acquired property in Gloucester by marriage. However this may be, there certainly had been intermarriages between the Cary, Pate and Wills families.

"Some Prominent Virginia Families", by Louise Pecquet du Bellet, 1907.

_____

Among the remnants of the Ceelys library are several books (e.g., Dryden's Miscellany Poems, iii, 1693, and v, 1703; Echard's Ecclesiastical History, 1702) bearing on the title- page the signature of "John Pate," the last with the date 1706 appended. Moreover, Colonel Wilson Cary by will disposed of lands lying on Poropotank Creek in Gloucester and King and Queen, the acquisition of which was not readily explainable except on the assumption of inheritance. It appears also from casual mention in the York records that Miles Cary was administrator of the estate of Edward Pate and that-a Miles Cary (probably Miles, Jr., of Potash Creek) was executor of John Pate under a will, now lost with the Gloucester records; while John Pate appears on the Virginia Quit Rent Rolls of 1704 as the owner of lands on Poropotank in Gloucester and King and Queen.

"The Virginia Carys", by Fairfax Harrison, 1919

_____

In 1715, one John Wills patents "130 acres in Gloucester, bounded by the main creek of Poropotank, adjoining a tract, devised to said Wills by Mr. John Pate in his last will." This John Pate is possibly the father of Mrs. Wilson Cary. I have in my library several volumes bearing the autograrph "John Pate, 1706," on the title page above that of Colonel Wilson Cary (possibly his son-in-law), and to increase the probabilities, I would add that I have also a volume showing in like manner the signature of Colonel Thomas Milner, and beneath it that of his son-in-law, Colonel Miles Cary. However this may be, there certainly had been intermarriages between the Cary, Pate and Hills families.

"The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography", July 1901

You grandfather was enumerated in the 1930 census of Wayne Co., MI (Detroit), the 1920 Census of Dougherty Co., GA (Albany), probably in the 1910 Census of Dougherty Co., GA (Albany) and possibly in the 1910 Census of Clay Co., FL.
In all cases he used the name Willie and gave GA as his place of birth. He was a baker by trade. Your listing of his daughters is incomplete. His oldest daughter was Hilda. His second daughter Vera E Pate was probably named for his older sister. Her married name was Vera King. His mother may have been Anna or SarahAnn. Please contact me direct - patej@nettally.com

Hi,
I am looking for any info that may help me find background on my grandfather, William Pate (no middle name that I've found yet.) I believe he was born around 1897 in Palatka, Fl. He moved to Albany, GA, where he met and married Mancy (or Samantha) Higgins. Their daughters are named Vera, Harriet and Florence. They raised their family in Detroit, MI. Any connections or leads are appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

PATE ROBINSON SIZEMORE Reunion - 05 SEP 2009 - Box Springs, GA

During the reception after my mom's memorial service at Mt. Paron Church in Box Springs, several cousins asked about holding a reunion soon, so...

We have decided to get up a meeting of the PATE, ROBINSON and SIZEMORE families on Saturday, September 5, 2009 (the upcoming Labor Day weekend), at 11 PM at the Mt. Paron Primitive Baptist Church on Box Springs Rd., just south of US Hwy. 80, in Box Springs, Talbot County, Georgia. The reunion is for the descendants of John & Martha Ann (WEATHERS) PATE and of George Washington & Rhoda (UNKNOWN) SIZEMORE - including the descendants of Burrell H. ROBINSON and his two wives, Ferlinia (SIZEMORE) ROBINSON and Gerina (SIZEMORE MOORE) ROBINSON – however, all interested parties are invited and welcome. A number of families related to the above migrated to Phenix City, particularly during the expansion of the Ft. Benning military reservation during World War II.

Also, the recently formed Mt. Paron Primtive Baptist Cemetery Association will meet the same day, Saturday, September 5, 2009, at 4 PM at the church. All interested parties are encouraged to attend and voice their opinion as we discuss the current and future upkeep and improvement of the cemetery property.

For more information on the above reunion and cemetery association meeting, contact Barbara SIZEMORE at 706.269.3991 or John LAND at 469.995.5222.

I am told there will also be a reunion of folk related to the above families at Mt. Pisgah Primitive Baptist Church in Sylvester, Worth County, Georgia, on Sunday, September 6. I don't have any further information on that, except that I believe Harold SIZEMORE of Cusseta, Georgia, is coordinating that event.

I look forward to seeing everyone soon! - John in TX

His son, Wiley Lee Pate, is my great-grandfather, and his daughter, Alma lee Pate, is my grandmother. She married Jobe Bennett Taylor. Their son, J.B. Taylor, is my father. All the above are gone to their reward, so I'm interested in anyone who is related. I know Alma's brother Jesse Ray Pate, died in Lamar, TX in 1998. I'd like to find info on her other siblings,
Alfred E PATE (RIN: 35), b. 1908
Jesse Ray PATE (RIN: 49), b. 1915
Thelma PATE (RIN: 50), b. 1912
Bonnie PATE (RIN: 51), b. 1917
Raymond PATE (RIN: 52), b. 1919

They most all but Thelma born in Texas.

Did Jeremiah Pate or Matthew Pate die on 1 Jun. 1780?

Many researchers say that Matthew Pate died in Halifax Co., VA, on 1 June 1780. Others say that Jeremiah Pate died 1 June 1780 in New Kent Co., VA.

I would guess that the confusion comes from the entry in John Christian's daybook that says that Judith Pate's father Matthew died 1 Jun. 1780. Other sources say that her father was Jeremiah and her grandfather Matthew.

Is there any evidence from county records or other documents that substantiate the death of either man? Do the tax records of either county shed any light on the year either man died?
