WATERVILLE -- Apoline Pauline Barnes, 101, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at Lakewood Manor.

She was born in Fair Isle Neguac, New Brunswick, Canada, Dec. 14, 1902, the daughter of Mathias and Philagene (Robichaud) Patrie.

Mrs. Barnes had attended Thomas College in Waterville and then left for Connecticut where she was employed as an accountant for Hartford Insurance Co. and also for the State of Connecticut.

She was a member of the Rosary Sodality and a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Waterville.

She enjoyed playing bridge with her friends. She was a truly strong independent woman who was loved by many and will surely be missed.

Her family wants to express thanks for the wonderful care she received at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Thayer Unit, Waterville, and at Lakewood Manor. They also want to thank Dr. William Bennett for his concern and services.

She was married to Harold Barnes in 1944 and after he died, in June 1969, she moved back to Maine.

Survivors include two special nieces, Irene Roy and Phyllis Taylor, both of Waterville; a great-niece, Lee-Anne Folsom of Vassalboro; and also by many other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Besides her husband and her parents, she was predeceased by four brothers, Fred, George, Ernest, and Abraham Patrie; and by four sisters, Mary Ouellette, Gertrude Moses, Amelia Gogan, and Louise Gager.

There will be no hours of visitation at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 30, at Sacred Heart Church, 70 Pleasant St., Waterville. Committal prayers will be recited at church.

Burial will follow in St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, Grove Street, Waterville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the Waterville Public Library, 73 Elm St., Waterville 04901.

Arrangements are with the Gallant Funeral Home, 10 Elm St., Waterville.
