Re: benoni patten

It's been many years since I've been doing research in this area and I'd have to look and see if I still know where I found the information. But, My mother comes from the Wyman line. William Wyman was married to Margaret Holmes and lived in Vermont. Benoni(Patten)Wyman grew up with the Wymans in Vermont along the river. When he grew up he moved across the river into NH and raised his family. His name Benoni means something like "one who suffers". This name was often given to children out of wedlock.

They way I piece this together is John Patten had a relationship with Margaret Holmes outside of marriage. William Wyman married her and raised Benoni as his child. Benoni later had a son who became an Apostle and martyr in the Morman faith. It would look bad in the church if this Apostle was found to be out of wedlock so they listed John Patten's Wife as Benoni's mother.

I've always wondered how Margaret Holmes met John Patten and where William Wyman came from but I couldn't find any more leads to keep pursuing this mystery.

Could your William Patten have been the second son of Isaac Patten and Eleanor Price Davis of Belmont County, Ohio? The date of birth would be about right. Isaac's father was name William Patten. The first son of Isaac was my ancestor and he was named Mark Price Patten. Rich Patten

One connection is Ann Patten 1808 who married Richard Muston Chant, brother of Isaac Muston Chant 1819 who was the father of Sarah Catherine Chant - my great grandmother. Others are Joseph Patten 1811 married Mary Chant - Mary Patten 1791 married Edward Chant (her parents Samuel Patten 1770 and Mary Shackle) - William Patten 1729 married Elizabeth Chant. I look forward to hearing from you.

Re: benoni patten

Please don't trust www.familysearch.org as the final arbiter of genealogical data. Use it as a pointer and verify what you find there using primary sources (if they exist).

As for Benoni, sometimes his name is given as Benenio Patten. Maybe that could be a good place to start. The data that is currently in familysearch.org is most probably garbage. John Patten and Abigail Makepeace lived in Massachusetts their whole lives, as far as we can determine. Their kids born both before Benoni and afterwards were born in Massachusetts. It stretches credulity to the breaking point to suggest they uprooted the family to New Hampshire or to New York (both birthplaces are postulated for Benoni) then scuttled immediately back to Massachusetts and stayed there forever afterwards. It appears some descendents of Benoni tacked him to John and Abigail's family so as to provide "proof" they were descended from a Mayflower passenger through the Makepeace line. I'm going to have half a day in Salt Lake City next Saturday (all I could wrestle from my schedule) and I'll start looking at the Vermont connection. It probably doesn't exist since it appears others have tried and failed, but then I do tend to tilt at windmills.

Earl Patten, b. 1860, son of William & Eliza Patten

I don't know if I am dealing with a set of twins or with birth date theft.

The 1860 Green Lake County, Wisconsin lists Earl Patton(Patten), age 2 months, son of William F. Patton(Patten) and Eliza Jane Cole. The census was taken July 13, 1860 so Earl would have been born in May, 1860. Earl does not appear in the 1870 census when William and Eliza have moved back to Shelby County, Indiana, and this is is supported by "Chadwick's History of Shelby County, Indiana" which notes that two of Eliza's children died in infancy.

The 1870 Shelby County, Indiana census lists no Earl but Eliza's next child, Rebecka Patten. She was age 9 in 1870 so she would have been born between July 1861 and June 1862. She did not appear in the 1860 census.

In the 1880 Shelby County census, Rebecca is now listed as 20 years old, which would push her birthday back to 1860.

"Chadwick's History of Shelby County, Indiana" and the 1900 census both show Rebecca's birth date as May 1860, but if that is correct, why wasn't she listed with Earl in the 1860 census?

Does anyone have any better information?
Beryl. The previous message I sent you was a mistake. I am also sending files to another researcher and did not realize you are someone new. As your first name is Beryl I am guessing you are a Patten desc. as I am. What line is yours? And are you in Brisbane, Spain??? Please send me an e-mail address you would like the file sent to as it is too long for a message board. I am more then happy to share my file with you. Mary J. in Wis.

Researching James Patten b Jun 1834 in New York (per 1900 census for Crawford, Wis) He married Jane (Coyer?) in 1868 and she is from CanadaFr. I can't find James in NY but it seems like a fit to your info. James and Jane had (at least)11 children, Sam E. in 1866-this is the line I am resarching-- pls share your findings at kwas44@comcasat.net thanks ever so much!

I just happened to run accross this. I am trying to locate William H Patten's father and the location of his family. The only information I have been to find so far is that William H Patten was born around 1854, that he lived with his brother on the farm of Abel Dean in Wynn Parish around 1870. I find him later living west of Cane river in 1900 with his wife Sarah Jane, and his children. One of which Isaac Newton is my great grandfather.

William Patten or Patton County Tyrone Ireland

The marriage record of my G grandparents George Patten to Margaret Dickson November 1867 lists William Patten as the groom's father. The marriage occured in Pomeroy Parish, County Tyrone, Ireland. Any information on GG grandfather, William would be appreciated. I have tried most of the Irish genealogy web sites. William was probably born around 1820.

Harold Paton
Naples FL
