James PATTIE m. Mary PHILLIPS at Talbot, Victoria, Australia in 1875

My great great grandfather James PATTIE (labourer) married a Mary PHIILIPS at Talbot, Victoria, Australia in 1875. This was his second marriage. He had previously been married to a Grace nee HORNE who died in 1871 at Ballaarat, Victoria. I believe Mary had also been married prior to that. Are there any descendants from Mary's first marriage available who can shed light on this part of James PATTIE's life? James died at Talbot in 1877. Thanking you. Regards, Rob Bell.

Thomas BELL - Miner, Goldsborough, Victoria, Australia 1880s

Seeking anyone with information about my g-g-grandfather's house & life at Goldsborough, Victoria, Australia during the 1880s. Thomas BELL (b.1827 in Allendale, Northumberland, England) was widowed in 1876 with the death of his wife Elizabeth BELL (nee ARMSTRONG). Thomas re-married to a Mary COOPER in Ballaarat at Irwin's Hotel on 20/4/1881 & I believe he lived at Goldsborough, Victoria as a gold miner until the mid 1880s but I am a little unsure about the details. I also believe he lived there together with his brother Robert BELL (b. 1832). Robert was unmarried but may have had a partner/girlfriend during this period. Thomas also had a son, Robert BELL (my g-grandfather - b.1855) who lived at Goldsborough from at least 1882 to 1884. Robert's wife was Isabella nee PATTIE. Both Roberts were gold miners also. Whether they all lived in the one house is uncertain. I am urgently seeking as much information about these ancestors as possible during their time at Goldsborough including the location of the property, what mine(s) they may have worked at and any anecdotal stories that have been passed down through family talk etc..this is very much appreciated. Cheers, Robert BELL, Essendon, Victoria, Australia.

Seeking any information at all about my great-great-great grandmother Jane CURL; born at Wooler, Northumberland, England in 1782, daughter of a William CURL and Jane (maiden surname unknown). Jane married James PATTIE, Colliery Manager ~1810 and died ~1840. James died in 1862. Their son James PATTIE (junior) married a Grace HORN in 1843 at Holy Island, Northumberland England). I had been told by my father that Grace had been employed by the Duke of Argyll, but this fanciful story has never been confirmed! Can someone please enlighten me on this unknown part of my ancestry?. Regards, Rob Bell, West Essendon, Victoria, AUSTRALIA.

Mary you ask an interesting question. From other Pattie researchers I understood that Champe was a late son of William A. Pattie and Eleanor (Ellen) Kincheloe. Champe being about 23 years younger than his oldest brother James Dudley. Martha Pattie was James Dudley's youngest sister. She would have been 16 in 1838. Your evidence would indicate that Champe was illegimate. Martha married but not until about 1842/43 to a William Kendall, moved to what is now W Va. and had a family by him. The cenus records do not show Champe living with Martha in 1850 . I would very much like to have copy of that death certificate.
Hi Mike,
Haven't gone through military records myself yet. Have found my Patties going back to 1826. My mother and grandmother, Jane Pattie, were born in Percy Main after that each generation goes further north. My great grandfather, John Pattie, was from Lowick and his father, Andrew Pattie, was from Ancroft. Where in Northumberland did you grow up? All of my extended family still live there, but like you pointed out most people on these boards are American and I am one of them. Spent all my summers in Northumberland though until my late teens, so I consider myself at least part Geordie. Do any of my Patties sound familiar from your research? Throw some of your names at me too, and I'll see if their paths cross anywhere. Take care, Karen

Hi Karen i've had a few replies and queries i think most people on this site are based in America. I myself am trying to find out more about our family line. I've found that two soldiers named Pattie listed as killed in action in the first world war (see CWGC) were uncles of my father they all came from Ashington. It is slow going when i'm in Ashington i try to learn more from my aunt Freda she is 90 now proberly the last link with that generation. I am moving back to Northumberland after leaving as a child, just love the coastline keep in touch let me know how you go on ..Mike

Hello Steve,
I just saw your message:
"PATTIE is Scottish. It is short or indeed a corruption of PATRICKSON or PATERSON.
The PATTIE surname belongs to the clan MacDuff.
My mothers maiden name is Pattie and I have traced her roots back to Scotland."

My mother's maiden name was PATTIE. I have traced my line back to William PATTIE b. 1762 in Virginia, we think, who married a Frances ? ? I have not been able to get any information any further back than that. My mother always kept a clipping about being Scottish, but I thought it was because of the STEWART connection of her mother. The old family story was that we were related to Mary Queen of Scots. Of course, when there were family around who could have told me about this, I wasn't interested!!
Your message is the first one I've seen which says anything about origins in Scotland. I hope you can share with me any information you have. Maybe it will knock down my 10 year old brick wall.
Thanks in advance for your help. I tried to send this to your e-mail address listed, but it came back.
Anne Wickliffe Bradshaw Musser
Muss@worldnet.att.net

Re: Parents of William

William b1762 and his brother John and his sister Lucy's father was John Pattie of Caroline County. I happened on a published journal of a colonial tutor. His journal contains references to the three children and their father. He taught William and Lucy begining in 1774 and John began in 1775. Unfortunately the tutor John Harrower died in 1776. The editor of the journal speculated that John who was a carpenter, wife's name was Susanna, but I don't think that is correct. A John Pattie did marry a Susanna Clark about 1760 in Essex County which is next door to Caroline Co., so the timing is correct. But!! The editor also speculated that James Pattie who lived in Caroline and was the father of another John Pattie (married Ann Sanders) was John's brother but I think he was more probably John's Uncle. If you want the details of the reference e-mail me. If you can convince me that William's mother was Susanna also e-mail me.

Hi Clive/Jane, I too am a great-great-grandson of James & Grace PATTIE!! I live in Victoria, Australia and am excited about stumbling on this contact! Have you any photos whatsoever from England of the PATTIES? I have absolutely nothing although photography was indeed a big thing in those days. I wonder why the family moved to Lindisfarne? My father used to tell me a romantic style story that at one time Grace (possibly before marriage) left home against her parents wishes to work for the Duke of Argyleshire! I also believe she had to cross water to go to work so maybe you could clarify this one? Most stories are based on fact although the truth of these 'fact' tends to get blurred over time.
What family rumours do you know of in the PATTIE/HORNE lines? Do you know much about the CURL family? Anyway let's keep communicating because it is great stuff! Incidentally I am the great grandson to Isabella PATTIE (daughter of James/Grace), who in turn was the mother of John BELL, my grandfather. Cheers, Rob Bell, Essendon, Victoria, Australia...

Hi Daniel,
You are correct about our Pattie name originally being
Pâté and that they have been in Nova Scotia since the
early 1700's.
My Uncle Alphonse Pattie from Boston told me before
he died that the Canadian army changed their name to
Pattie when they enlisted for WWII. However, I have
birth certificates and other information that shows the
name as being Pâté.
Others changed it to Pottie which is completely incorrect,
and I have had the Nova Scotia Government apologize and
correct my father's name and my own. They didn't
charge us, and said it was their mistake.
Maria
