According to Patton's biographer, Martin Blumenson, Robert Patton (not his real surname) left Scotland either to escape criminal prosecution, political arrest, or parental discipline. It is said that no Patton's appeared on the ships manifest departing Scotland but Robert assumed his mother's maiden name of Patton and began his new life in America. He made his first appearance by signing a deed of land in Fredericksburg, VA, in 1771. Robert then married the daughter of General Washington's surgeon general, Hugh Mercer. The rest is Patton history as we know it. Reference: PATTON, the man behind the legend, 1885-1945 by Martin Blumenson, author of "The Patton Papers". I will be glad to answer any and all questions regarding Gen. G.S. Patton Jr. Lt. Col. John L. Patton pattonsq@hotmail.com.
