"John Dorrington Patton" is combination of two different people

Those of you who may have heard of a person named "John Dorrington Patton", or may have added this name to their own family tree, may wish to review my recent post at http://boards.ancestry.ca/localities.northam.usa.states.miss..., the subject being "No proof that "John Dorrington Patton" exists". I believe that my ancestor Dorn Patton (called Dorrington during his younger years) has unfortunately been combined with one or possibly two other people named John Patton. In my recent post, I have tried to provide some clarification concerning these individuals and their respective families, which I believe have been erroneously conflated (from Wikipedia: "Conflation occurs when the identities of two or more individuals, concepts, or places, sharing some characteristics of one another, become confused until there seems to be only a single identity"). I was probably not as skillful at sugar-coating my clarification as I ought to have been, so I hope people will read through my post completely and give some thought to the points I have tried to make, and will refrain from "shooting the messenger". I hope the impact of this information on other people's databases is minimal.
Best wishes,
Bob Butler
If you brother is a Patton he can do the DNA test but for the Wood family you'll have to use your mother's brothers. The more popular Y test goes male-to-male. The maternal line goes female to female and not as widely used. This is not my line, just noted the post.

The Walter Patton that arrived in Philadelphia in 1831 included 12 children (Hannah and William Henry were two of them--no Bridget.) This has been verified by the family Bible which I still have. I know very little about William Henry (b. 1820) though one correspondent told me his wife's name was Willey.

Walter, the father was a tailor, a paper hanger and a Baptist minister...busy guy! Sons appear to have settled in Philadelphia and the Camden, NJ area.

Thank you for the information. I actually have the record for Hannah Patton coming over on Nov. 2, 1831 on the ship Thames. I was hoping to see a Bridget Patton on the list but there was not. The families could be some relation. Do you know if William Patton moved from Philadelphia to Minersville, PA? I believe that I found a connection between a William Patton and Northcumberland, England in genealogy from Schuylkill County.

Don't know if this helps or not. But I found this family in England--right place, no Thomas but there may have been cousins!

"Walter Paton, christened 1778 in Simonburn, Northumberland, Eng. -- parents were Walter Paton and Elizabeth Hewson, married 28 Aug 1766 in Simonburn and the children were Ann 1767, Robert 1768, Elizabeth 1772, Joseph 1774 and Walter 1778.

My Walter Patton came to Philadelphia on the ship Thames on 2 Nov 1831 to Phila. from London, England. They had a daughter Hannah too. You might check film at the National Archives in Phila. M-360, Roll 114, Passenger Lists of Vessels Arriving at Phila. 1800-1906.

Walter Patton, age 54 yr., occ.. Tailor, nat. She married Thomas Morgan Flaherty. However we have found oout that she married a Cloer the first time, haven't found any first name or when they married, this came from Thomas's pension records.

My dad, Hiram Perry Shuffield was a son Martha Jane Flaherty, Clark, Shuffield, she was the daughter of Sarah Jane Patton Flaherty and she was the daughter of Paschal Patton and Lucretia Jones. So Paschal & Lucretia was my g-g-grandparents. I am trying to figure out if Lucretia and Elizabeth were sisters. Do you know anything about this.

I just posted a reply but not sure if it worked.
William M. Patton and Mary Elizabeth Adams Patton were my great grandparents. They are buried at Dollarhide Cemetery, Foreman, AR in Little River County. Mary Elizabeth Patton actually died in Texarkana, TX where she was living with the Malaby family, the family of her son-in-law and her daughter Hattie Elizabeth Patton Malaby. My father lived with them. I believe William's parents were David Patton (the one born in 1807 and not 1808) and Mary Polly Gilbert, b 1813 in Ky or VA. I'm not 100% sure of this but an examination of 1850 and 1870 census records from Floyd County KY seems to support this. Mary Elizabeth Adams Patton's parents were William Adams and Margaret Bays. They were all from around Prestonsburg Kentucky, Floyd County.

Re: Elijah/Elizah MORRIS and Elisabeth PATTON

More on the family of Elijah Morris and Elisabeth Patton: Seeking information on the family of Caleb PATTON (1815-??) and his wife, Orpha ?? (1811-??). With eleven children, the family is listed in Whiteley Twp., Greene Co., PA in the 1850 census with the name spelled as PATTEN. In 1860, Caleb and his wife and two children have moved to Fairbury, Livingston Co., IL which Caleb helped to layout and develop. In the 1870 census, Caleb's surname is spelled PATTON.

Of particular interest is his oldest daughter, Phebe, b. in 1831 in PA according to the 1850 census. Did Phebe change her name to Elisabeth and marry Elijah/Elhanan/Elhan MORRIS sometime in the 1850s and then move to Livingston Co., IL? The spelling of Elijah's name varies with the census. In 1850 it is Elijah. In 1860, it is Elhan. In 1870 and 1880 and his wife's obit., it is Elhanan.

Elijah/Elhanan MORRIS is the son of Peter Morris and Elizabeth Renner in Greene Co., PA. Peter and Elijah are distant cousins of my wife.

Willing to exchange information.

Bill Muller
married to a Morris
muller1938@yahoo.com

Elijah/Elizah MORRIS and Elisabeth PATTON

Elijah/Elizah MORRIS (1833-1902) was a son of Peter Morris and Elizabeth RENNER. Elijah/Elizah was born in Whiteley Twp., Greene Co., PA and is supposed to have married Elisabeth PATTON and then moved to IL. I can specifically identify Elijah/Elizah in the 1850 census, but NOT after that.

Where was Elijah/Elizah at the time of the 1860, 1870, 1880 and 1900 census. What did he do for a living? When did he actually move to IL?

Did he marry, and if so, to whom? Was it to Elisabeth Patton (or someone else)? IF it was Elisabeth Patton, who were her parents and where was she born? Robert Earl Ketchem suggests that she was born in 1830 and died in 1924 (in IL), but I can't find her in the census.

This is part of a project to identify the various parts of my wife's MORRIS family who settled in Greene Co., PA.

Willing to share information.

Bill Muller
muller1938@yahoo.com

Hello

I am researching my wifes's family tree (maternal side), and would like to see if anyone knows of ancestors or links to Adella (possible Adelle?) Patton (born about 1883) who married Clarence Swartz (born about 1884). Unfortunately we don't have much details re location etc.

They had a daughter, Marian Euleta Swartz
Born October 2nd 1910
Died September 29 1992

Ideally we would like to trace the Swartz and Patton lines as far back as we can. There was a rumoured link to Gen. George S Patton, but such things remain rumour and conjecture until verified.

If anyone thinks they may have a link to the family line, please get in touch :)

Thanks

Lester Anderson
John was sent to Carroll County Missouri as young man probaly to due to the unrest in Arkansas during the Civil War.

This is rather involved. The sisters' father's name was John Jones. After Isaac Patton died his widow moved to Carroll County Missouri where her son was living, John T. Patton, my great grandfather. John T Patton married a Eizabeth Jones. Her father was Benton Jones and his wife was Margaret Cloer Jones. Her mother was Lucretia Wright who married Jacob Cloer. Lucretia is buried in Washington County Arkansas. Can you see why I feel there is some relationship between the Jones and Patton families. I have some proof, but not enough.

Every since I have been researching the Patton, I never could under why my great grandfather moved to Carroll as young man. His brother stayed in Washington County. I think part of his mother reasoning might have been related to the civil war raging in Arkansas. Maybe the Jones were related to her.

My great-great-great-great grandfather was Thomas Patton. His daughter, Hannah, married Peter Mcdonnell. Thomas Patton settled in Minersville in 1838. His sons opened the first coal mines in the area. I believe Bridget Patton Lowry is Hannah's sister. You can find them on the 1880 census living at the McDonnell Hotel. I think it may have been called the National Hotel. Read Floyd's Northcumberland County Genealogy on-line. I am researching the Patton family and think they may have been from Northcumberland, England.
