Hello anyone who`s family name is very similar to the mine!
I put together a short analysis of records I found on any people that might be related to me and that came to US in early 20th century.
In case you might recognize you relatives among the names below, please contact me at: barysna@yahoo.com.
The very first guy I would like to mention is Ivan Pawolak which came to US from Austria on March 27th, 1896. He was 33 y.o. and single. He came with ship called “Aller†from Bremen, Germany. It is very possible that the area he came from was Western Ukraine which that time belonged to Austria.
(e.g. Nastasow, the village where my family comes from, was located in Galicia/Austria/Poland – depending on year and historical/political/geographic border changes).
FYI, Nastasow (Polish version) = Nastasiv (Ukrainian version)
Of course, this is only my assumption. I just think that he might be connected to Semko Pawulak (please see below).
Next person to come to US was Eudokia (Yevdokia) Pawulak which came to US on 10/10/1906 with the ship called “Friedrich der Grosse†from Bremen, Germany. Her trip to US has been payed by her husband. She was 22 y.o., married, she could read and write, she had brown hair, brown eyes, and she was quite short (155cm which is 5'1"). She wanted to get to the city/town called Hudson and she has a ticket to get there. Also, she has $10 on her when she came to US.
Eudokia was followed by Jan Pawuliak which came to US on 10/16/1907 with ship called “Barbarossa†from Bremen, Germany. He was 23 y.o. and single. He came from Litiatyn, Galicia. (Galicia = historical name for area of Western Ukraine). His trip to US has been payed by his brother. Jan was 175cm (5'9") tall, and he had brown hair and brown eyes.
Two years later, on 10/13/1909, Semko Pawulak came to US. He came from Ruthenia, which is another historical name for Ukraine. At his arrival, he was 26 y.o. and married. He came with ship called “Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse†from Bremen, Germany. He got to this ship on 10/05/1909 so his trip lasted some 9 days. Last place of his residence is Cohesty, USA. It might mean that Semko already was in US before (?). I`m not sure. He was laborer and came to his brother Ivan Pavulak which was from Nastasov (this might be the Ivan I mentionned at the very beginning, but I`m not sure).
On 09/10/1910, Panka Pawulak came to US. He came from Barchy, Austria. He was 18 y.o. and single. He could read and write. He came with ship called “Amerika†from Hamburg, Germany. He got on the ship on 08/31/1910. He had $27.50 on him. He had fair hair and blue eyes.
And the last Pavulyak I found was Iliko (I`lko) Pawulak which very probably was my grand-grandfather. He came to US on 12/21/1910 and he came here together with his wife Xenia. They came with the ship called “Vaderland†from Antwerp, Belgium. They boarded the ship on 12/10/1910. Ilko was 33 y.o., brown eyes and he was 5'5". Xenia was 19 y.o. On 08/24/1911, they had a son Michal. It seems that later on Xenia and Michal returned back to Ukraine. However, they got back to US again. Next record shows they return to US on 03/10/1924. Xenia was 33, she could read and write, and she has $25 on her. She had fair hair and blue eyes, and she was 5'6". Michal was 12. They came with ship called “Orduna†from Hamburg, Germany. They boarded the ship on 02/27/1924 which means their trip took around 12 days. After they came to US they got hospitalized, but later they were discharged from hospital. The only relative mantionned in Xenia`s records was her brother-in-law Jan Nazarevitch which was from Nastasiv, Ukraine. The records show she came to US to stay there forever and to become a US citizen. It is marked that Michal already was US citizen because he was born in US before (in Troy, NY). The only address given in Xenia`s records was 192 Avenue C, New York. I went there but there is nothing anymore, just a newer, maybe 30 y.o. house.
Hopefully I`ll find any relatives.
Have a nice day,
Mariana
