Pawlak, Michael and Katherine of New Britain CT

Looking for the family of Michael Pawlak of Willow St., New Britain CT. Also signed his name Mykhayl Pavliak. Michael probably died around 1967. He was a Pawlak and a Dutka, he claimed to be born in Scranton PA, but he possibly spent time in Poland as a youth. He was married three times, and with his first wife, a daughter of the Demiak family, he had 8 children. That wife passed away, he married a second briefly and then eventually married Katherine, who had children from a previous marriage. They appear to have lived in New Britain until they passed away. He was related maternally (Dutka)to the Maria Bazylevytch - Alexander Kostyshak family of Klimkowka, Galicia (now Poland) and corresponded with Eugenia Bazilevitch Brelinsky of Montana for many years. A niece, Olga Pawlak of Zabrze, Poland and another neice Maria Pawlak (and husband Volodymir) of Krakow Poland also are mentioned.

I am looking for relatives of Michael(P.?)Pawlak of Willow and Broad St., New Britain, CT who was also related to the Bazilevitch/Kostyshak family from Klimkowka, Galica (now Poland). Michael was married three times. He had 8 children by his first wife (a Demiak family daughter), who died in 1944, followed by a brief second marriage, his third wife was named Katherine, who also had children from a previous marriage.
Michael' letters conveyed he was born in Scranton PA. but lived most of his later years in New Britain CT. He may have spent some time in Poland as a youth. He had a son who lived with him till probably 1950 or so. Michael's mother was a most likely a Dutka (he stated he was a Dutka and a Pawlak) and was from Galicia(now Poland). He corresponded faithfully with an apparent Aunt, Eugenia Bazilevitch Brelinski of Montana until her death in 1967, and his death not too long afterwards.

Thanks for your email. Yes, I think the last "Michael Pawlock" is my great great grandfather. The dates of entry and age are about right. Otherwise, I have consulted Joyce Tice and the Tioga websites. Very extensive , and helpful. Hoping that Michaeel Pawlak's grave would be at St. Mary's cemetery, since he was a founding member of the polish catholic church there.

Jim Pavlock

It's nice to hear from you. Unfortunately, I don't have any information on the Pawlak family.
Regrettably there's no immediate match between your Marcin and Mary and mine. My family settled in Buffalo NY, and Marcin died long before 1950.
Have you tried to trace them back to the ship that they came over on?
Church records for marriages and baptisms also usually contain where the family was from in the "old country."
Providing parents names, dates of birth and death will help better identify your Marcin and Mary for others.

Bruce

There may be a connection between Michael Pawlak in Dunkirk NY and Leo Pavlock (Pawlak), brother of Martin Pavlock (Pawlak) of Arnot and Blossburg, PA (Tioga County). I just spoke by phone to Fr. Martin Pavlock, who lives in Jamestown and was formerly from Dunkirk.
I am the great-grandson of Martin (Marcin) Pawlak and Mary Pavlock, featured in the photo on St. Mary's Church in Blossburg, PA (Tioga Co.) on the occasion of the church's 75th jubilee in the 1950s. They were one of the founders of this church, which was the second oldest polish church in the US and oldest in PA. If anyone has any information on Martin Pawlak (i.e., info on his parents, documents evidencing his brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles), I would be most appreciative. I have quite a bit of info, but am looking more for info on his ancestors, place of origin in Poland, etc. Thank you. Jim Pavlock (Pawlak).

Re: Pawlaks from Helenowo, Poland

On reflection, I think there is probably a connection. I don't think Helenowo is a large city, although Pawlak is quite common. My grandmother, Stanislawa aka Stella, came from Helenowo in 1903 to Chicago where she met her brother Ignatz. She had a younger brother, Antoni, who came to her in Chicago @1913. His Social Security application gave his birthplace as Konin, with father, Stanislaw, and mother, Jadwiga/Louise Jablonska. A family story is that Stanislaw was something along the lines of the "town crier" or some other minor official. Many of the family stories are not correct though. Think there is a connection?

Pawlak - IN, WI, NY

I am looking for any further information on Pawlak's that were born in Indiana. My g-grandmother was Mary Pawlak and married George Nowak. She had a brother Frank who married Rose (?), a brother Joe, a sister Gertrude, a sister Rose who married (?) Kraft, and a sister L??? who lived in NY. Mary, Gertrude, and Rose all supposedly died of TB. I would be very interested in finding any relatives and any further information on ancestry. Thanks much.

The Stanley Pawlak you mentioned as your grandfather's brother is my great great grandfather. I would really appreciate any information you could give me on your family so I can connect the two. My grandfather Ronald Krystofiak of Dunkirk mentioned that him and your father were 2nd or 3rd cousins or something like that.

Does the name Felix Pawlak ring a bell? Today, I found the following names in my deceased grandparent's and auntie's family albums: Felix Pawlak, Frank Paulak and Gertrude Pawlak.

My grandparents' names are William and Anna Urban. At first, they were known as Vincent and Anna Urbonas, and then later changed to William Urbonas, which eventually dropped to William Urban. Anyway, after spending some time in Chicago, my granparents, William, Anna, and their daughters Bernice and Sophie moved to Thorp, Wisconsin where my Great Grandparents (Anna's parents) John and Anna Sneider (Children Anna, Ursula, Mike and Helen) owned a family farm. According to the information, I have, the Pawlak's mentioned visited my family farm and kept a close correspondance to the Urbans, Sneiders and Stegwells. I mention because sometime in the 1940's Bernice Urbonas/Urban married Stanely Stegwell. Some of the letters she received were signed by Felix, Frank, Gertrude.

I think I might have some photographs of these individuals. Tomorrow, I'll take another look, and if I come across some pictures, I'll make sure to post another message.

Ok, here's the scoop. I went through the albums again, and I found 1 picture of Gertrude Pawlak and 3 pictures of Felix Pawlak. Additionaly, I came across and old invitation sent by Frank and Gertrude Pawlak inviting my granparents to a surprise party on Tuesday, August 12, 1940 at 7:30 PM. For who? The invite didn't say. There was also a Christmas card sent to my grandparents from the Pawlaks. I'm not sure what kind of connection it is between the Pawlaks and Urbans, but I do know there are few notes in my albums that refer the Pawlaks to Auntie.Whatever this means, I'm not sure. At this time, I can't seem to find any photographs of Frank; however, I have tons of stuff to look through yet. As I continue to dig through my family "archives" I'll keep close attention to the Pawlak name for it appears frequently.

Meanwhile, I'm in the process of building a Missing Link Genealgy Website. Basically, the concept of this website is to display names and photographs of individuals I cannot identify where others in the genealogy/Lithuanian community can possibly make a match for any missing links they come across. There's even going to be an option on my website for others to post their missing links too. I'm hoping it will eventually grow into a "missing link" database. I'll keep you updated on this, and let you know when the site is completed and running.

Have fun with the pictures, and please let me know if anyone in your family can make an identification. Happy searching...

Pamela

Does the name Felix Pawlak run into your family line? Today, I was browsing through some very old family scrapbooks, and on various pages, I found the names of Felix, Frank and Gertrude Pawlak. The Pawlak's who were listed frequently in my family albums could either be distant relatives, or friends of my grandparents, William/Vincent and Anna Urban/Urbonas (Vincent was my grandfather's birth name. When he moved to Wisconsin from Chicago he changed his name to William Urban). In addition, since my grandparents shared a family farm with my great grandparents John and Anna Sneider, they could be associated to the Pawlaks as friends too. The Pawlak's in my family archives also sent letters of correspondance to my grandfather's daughter, Bernice Urbonas/Urban who later married Stanley Stegwell.

Tomorrow, I'll be looking through those items again. I think there are a few pictures of them. If so, I'll send them to you electronically so you can make an ID on them.

Pamela

My greatgreat grandmother was Victoria Pawlak. I believe her maiden name was Wisniewski but I have no information on her. I don't know her husbands name either. My family is from Dunkirk, NY so they might have come from Buffalo, NY like other parts of my family.

I only know of one child of theirs, my great grandmother Mary Frances Pawlak who married Bernard L. Krystofiak. They both died in Dunkirk, NY and had 8 children that I know of: Bernard Jr., Florian, Arlene, Robert, Joseph, Virginia, Harry, and Ronald (my grandfather). I don't know if there's a connection between your Victoria and mine, but if any of this sounds familiar please let me know.

I don't know if there is any connection here or not, but I am researching a Ignatz Pawlak who immigrated from Germany/Poland in 1901 and settled in Erie, PA with his wife Jadwiga. Had 8 children: Martha, Stanislaus, Salome, Sophie, Stephen, Andrew, Hedwiga and Elizabeth. We are not sure if the Pawlak's are related to us or not, but they appear in many old Zukowski family photos. Think there may be a connection?

Answe from Mariana Pavulyak

Hi, there, I`m looking for anyone who`s ancestors came to US from Ukraine, Nastasiv and who`s family name varied from Pawulak to Pavulyak/Pavuliak/Pavulak. That time, Nastasiv was under Polish rule so the records show my ancestors as being Polish which is wrong. They were Ukrainian and the area they came from was called Ruthenia or Galicia that time (today it`s Ukraine). I went through all the records in Ellis Island and found these names related to me:
Yevdokiya Pavulyak (came here in 1906)
Jan Pavulyak (from Lityatyn, Western Ukraine, came to US in 1907)
Semko Pavulyak (in 1909, he came to his brother Ivan Pavulyak which was from Nastasiv, Ukraine)
Panka Pavulyak (came in 1910 and he lived in Barchy, Western Ukraine)
and, finally, in 1910 it was my grand-grandfather Iliko (Il`ko) Pavulyak which came here with his wife Xenia and in Aug.24, 1911 their son Michal was born here. For some reason Xenia and Michal later left back to Ukraine but they return to US in March 10, 1924, when Xenia was 33 and Michal 12. In the records, Xenia indicates just one relative of her, and this was Jan Nazarevitch, living on 192 Avenue C in New York.
I`m going there today to check out the place.
Please anyone who recognized his/her relatives among these people, please contact me at: barysna@yahoo.com
I would be more that happy to find relatives here.
I live in New Jersey.
And my name is Mariana

THE PAVULAK / PAWULAK / PAWULIAK UPDATE!!!!!!!

Hi all,

As it seems that finally I got in touch with one of my distant relatives, I went through all the Ellis Island records one more time, and I updated my research with more details that I missed 1 year ago.
Of course, now I have some more info from my cousin that I found, but still, there is some confusion regarding Ilko`s family life and there are some things we did not figure out yet. That`s why, if you think you might be our relative, please do not hesitate to contact me at: barysna@yahoo.com.
So, here is the update:

The very first guy I would like to mention is Ivan Pawolak which came to US from Austria on March 27th, 1896. He was 33 y.o. and married. He came with ship called Aller from Bremen, Germany. It is very possible that the area he came from was Western Ukraine which that time belonged to Austria. Because that time, part of the Ukraine (and Ternopil, too) called Galicia belonged to Austria, and another part to Russia.
For more info, please see:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galicia_(Central_Europe)
(please read the part: The Great Economic Emigration)
Pls see the map:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/uk/b/b4/Ukraine18end.j...

Nastasow, the village where my family comes from, was located in Galicia / Austria / Poland – you name it - depending on year and historical/political/geographic border changes).
Nastasow (Polish version) = Nastasiv (Ukrainian version) = Nastasov (Russian version)

Of course, this is only my assumption. I just think that he might be connected to Semko Pawulak (please see below).

Next person to come to US was Eudokia (Yevdokia) Pawulak which came to US on 10/10/1906 with the ship called Friedrich der Grosse from Bremen, Germany. Her ethnicity says: Austria Galicy, Ruthenian. Ruthenian ethinic group is present in Slovakia where they call them Rusini, and the same minority exists in the Ukraine and there they call them Hutsuly. For more info, please see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruthenians
Place of birth: Nastasow. Her trip to US has been payed by her husband. She was 22 y.o., married, she could read and write, she had brown hair, brown eyes, and she was quite short (155cm which is 5'1"). She wanted to get to the city/town called Hudson and she has a ticket to get there. Also, she has $10 on her when she came to US. There is some strange number in her record that says: 1-337496-10-20-41. Was this some phone #? ID #? SS #? I don`t know. There also is the name of her husband, but I cannot read it, it looks it starts by “O”. Also, there is some address and I think it says: Grand St. 5, Hudson, and I cannot read the state – is it NY? If It`s the Hudson in the NY state, then it`s not far from Troy, NY – 1 hour ride by car.

Eudokia was followed by Jan Pawuliak which came to US on 10/16/1907 with ship called Barbarossa from Bremen, Germany. He was 23 y.o. and single. He came from Litiatyn, Galicia. (Galicia = historical name for area of Western Ukraine). His trip to US has been payed by his brother. Jan was 175cm (5'9") tall, and he had brown hair and brown eyes. There is some address in his record, Washington St , 4507, New York. And I found his mother name, it was Zofia Pawuliak.
Now anyone related to this guy – please write to me, because I found his relatives back in the Ukraine! There is a widow with 4 kids and they are related to Jan, I spoke to them.

Two years later, on 10/13/1909, Semko Pawulak came to US. He came from Ruthenia, which is another historical name for Ukraine. Place of birth: Nastasiv. At his arrival, he was 26 y.o. and married. He had $65 on him. The record shows he already has been to the US before, in Sep. 1907, in Cohoes, NY. This is 7 min. by car from Troy, NY. His wife was called Mary (Maryann?) Pawulak and they actually lived in Cohoes that time. He came with ship called Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse from Bremen, Germany. He boarded this ship on 10/05/1909 so his trip lasted some 9 days. Last place of his residence is Cohesty, USA. He was laborer and came to his brother Ivan Pavulak which was from Nastasov (this might be the Ivan I mentioned at the very beginning, but I`m not sure).

On 09/10/1910, Panka Pawulak came to US. He came from Barchy, Austria. He was 18 y.o. and single. He could read and write. He came with ship called Amerika from Hamburg, Germany. He boarded the ship on 08/31/1910. He had $27.50 on him. He had fair hair and blue eyes. I cannot read the address, but the street # is 165 and the town could be Johnstown, PA.

And the last Pavulyak I found was Iliko (I`lko) Pawulak which very probably was my great-grandfather. Pls see the picture attached. He came to US on 12/21/1910 and he came here together with his wife Xenia. They came with the ship called Vaderland from Antwerp, Belgium. They boarded the ship on 12/10/1910. Ilko was 33 y.o., had fair complexion, dark hair and brown eyes and he was 5'5". Nationality: Ruthenian. There is a record that said he or Xenia might have visited the US before, in Sep. 1908, and he or she was/were in Troy, NY because a relative, Fedko Pindus/Pendus lived there, at 374 2nd Street. There is a stamp on both of their names that says: NON-IMMIGRANT ALIEN. I`m not sure what it meant that time. Were they just visiting Xenia`s relatives and then stayed? Final destination of their trip: again, Troy, NY. Both Ilko and Xenia were born in Nastasow and the name od Ilko`s father started with Ma….Pawulak, and he was from Nastasow.
Xenia was 19 y.o. She had fair complexion, dark hair and blue eyes. On 08/24/1911, they had a son Michal. It seems that later on Xenia and Michal returned back to the Ukraine. However, they got back to US again. Next record shows they return to US on 03/10/1924. Xenia was 33, she could read and write, and she has $25 on her. She had fair hair and blue eyes, and she was 5'6". Michal was 12. They came with ship called Orduna from Hamburg, Germany. They boarded the ship on 02/27/1924 which means their trip took around 12 days. After they came to US they got hospitalized, but later they were discharged from hospital. The only relative mentioned in Xenia`s records was her brother-in-law Jan Nazarevitch which was from Nastasiv, Ukraine. The records show she came to US to stay there forever and to become a US citizen. It is marked that Michal already was US citizen because he was born in US before (in Troy, NY). The only address given in Xenia`s records was 192 Avenue C, New York. I went there but there is nothing anymore, just a newer, maybe 30 y.o. house. BUT I just saw another address in Michal`s record, and it`s 208 Pearl Street, Troy, NY.

Please note that there only was one Pavulyak family in Nastasiv, so all those Pavulyak guys from Nastasiv that left for the US must be my relatives. I really would love to know where Ilko`s grave is, to visit him. Please let me know if you know....Thanks a lot.
