Sarah Paxton

LAKE SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Sarah "Sally" Paxton, 69, beloved wife, mother, friend, colleague, environmentalist and educator, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2008, at her home in Lake San MARCOS, Calif. Her husband, Jack Paxton, was with her at the time of her death.

She is survived by her husband, Jack; her son, Paul Paxton of Champaign; her daughter, Anne Paxton Smith and her husband, Paul Smith; her granddaughter, Sarah, and grandson, Gabriel; her brother, William Plough; and several nieces, all of California.

Sally was born Nov. 13, 1938, the daughter of Marian Page Plough and William Plough, who preceded her in death.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Aug. 24, at 2 p.m. at Community United Church of Christ, 805 S. Sixth, Champaign. A reception will follow immediately in the church parlor.

For many years, Sally operated a preschool in her home on Brownfield Road in Urbana, giving loving and nurturing care that profoundly affected the children whose lives she touched. As a mother and educator, Sally shared her love for the environment with her own children and all others she met, particularly those who attended the preschool. She exposed her young students to nature and expanded their experiences with the wonders that surround us every day. After she closed her school, Sally was for many years a dedicated teacher and director at Kid's Place preschool at Wesley Church in Urbana. Throughout her life, she was an active member of Community United Church of Christ in Champaign, and after retirement, at her UCC church in California.

In the early 1970s, as a young mother and with her children, Anne and Paul, in tow, Sally helped with the petition drive led by the Committee on Allerton Park (now known as the Prairie Rivers Network) to save Allerton Park from being flooded.

Sally and her husband, Jack, were major donors and founders of the Prairie Rivers Network and spent decades supporting the environmental movement in East Central Illinois and across the nation. Each year, she helped with registration and provided refreshments for the volunteers who annually clean up the Salt Fork River.

She was a strong supporter and confidante to her husband, Jack, as he founded the local chapter of the Sierra Club and the Prairie Group and led petition drives and clean-ups, met with state legislators and flew to Washington, D.C., to lobby for important causes, and contribute to other environmental efforts.

Sally's gentle spirit, compassion and generosity, her passion for children and the beauty of nature, and her gift for friendship remain with all who knew her. We will remember her as we visit the natural areas she treasured and helped to protect.

In lieu of flowers, it was Sally's wish that friends consider a contribution to Interfaith Coastal, 2195 Oceanside Blvd., Oceanside, CA 92054.
