Researching Paysons in South Carolina

Could someone help me do a research for Paysons in South Carolina.

I have a James Payson listed as the father on my gr.gr. grandmother's Death Certificate. It's important that I found out who this man is, and figure out the truth about his relationship to and with my gr.gr.gr. grandmother.

My 3rd great grandmother died of a injury that I'm hoping is only due to childbirth, the injury also can occur as a result of violent rape, thirdly it can be caused by a surgery that I doubt was performed back then.

My 3rd gr. grandmother was Ella Ann Gibbes, at least a part African American woman, she was born abt. 1858 in Charleston and died August 12, 1899. She had two daughters, Adelaide (1874?) and Magdaline (1875?).

I cannot find James Payson any where in S.C. either in 1870 or 1880. He is said to be born in Charleston. I found Ella in 1870 Ward 4 of Charleston living with other females including a woman named Elizabeth Williams. I also found her and Elizabeth living in Charleston in 1880 with Ella's two daughters, the relationship between Elizabeth and Ella is never stated.

I hope someone can help me with this, I want to know if Ella was raped by James or if the injury she eventually died of was just due to childbirth.

Thanks
