If you're interested in sharing information please contact me. I'm also interested in Photos of Paytons.

Jacob b 1787, William b 1791, Susan b 1795 Payton parents found

The parents of the above siblings are William Payton and Mary Ribolt. Source is the death register record of Susan Payton Ross Gibson 12/5/1884, Delaware Co., Indiana Bureau of Vital Statistics Book CH3, pg 215. The certified death certificate does NOT contain this data, only the original source register. We believe that Mary Ribolt may have had brothers Jacob and Michael Ribolt. In any case, the PA Archives Militia Washington Co., Pennsylvania list in the 2nd Battn Jacob and Michael Ribolt and William and Thomas Peyton, which is suggestive that Mary Ribolt m William Payton is related to these Ribolt brothers and may have named her son Jacob after her brother. Jacob is not a known Payton family given name until this generation. The Ribolts migrated to Kentucky.

Re: C Lipscombs in both Doddridge and Nelson Counties in 1860

Oops. I think I went astray tying the Christopher Lipscomb in Doddridge County to the Christophers in Nelson County in 1850 and 1860; in the 1860 census, there are young C. Lipscombs in each county. The Doddridge County C. Lipscomb is married to "E", and has children L (male age 9), Nancy 7, Wm 5, and E 1. This is a better match to the 1870 and 1880 census than the Christopher/C B Lipscomb in Nelson County.

Richard Payton

In the 1900 census, Frank and Sephrona Peyton are in West Union Town, Doddridge County, WV; Frank is 36 (born Feb 1864) and Sephrona is 24 (born Aug 1875); they have daughters Eunice (Dec, 1897) and Delia (Jan 1900); niece Ollie(?) born Oct 1888 is also in the household.

In 1910 they are in Clarksburg, Harrison County; Sofronah Payton is 32, with 6 children: Eunice age 12, Delia age 10, Charles age 9, Roy age 6, Inez age 2 and Ira age 1 1/12.

In 1920 they are in Adamston, Harrison County; Sophronia Payton is 44; children are Delia 19, Charles 18, Roy 15, Inez 13, Harry 6, Harvey 4 8/12, Carl 2 4/12 and Bernard 5/12.

In 1930, the family is in Akron, Ohio; Safroinal Payton is 51; children at home are Harry 17, Harvey 14, Carl 13, Bernard 10, and Ira 20; Roy 25 is married and also in the home with wife Fern (28) and children Juanita 2 and Martha 0/12.

Christopher and Virginia Lipscomb are in Union, Ritchie County, WV in 1880; Christopher is 52, born in WV; Virginia is 23; Christopher and Virginia were married within the past 12 months. A step-son of Christopher's is named Hiram Lowther, age 1, so Virginia looks to have been married once before. Christopher's children are Godfrey 16, Mary 13, Ben 12, Houch(?) 10 year old daughter, Rusia 7 year old daughter and Josh(?) 2 year old daughter; I would guess one of the three is Sophronia. William Lipscomb age 23 with wife Emily lives next door.

In 1870, Christopher Lipscomb age 45 is in Doddridge County with wife Elizabeth age 30; children are Nancy J 17, Wm. 14, Eliza A. 11, Jackson 9, Geo. 8, Godfrey 6, Caroline V. 3, "Not named" 1 (male); Louis Lipscomb age 20 is listed last.

In 1860, C. B. Lipscomb is 24 in Nelson County, VA, born in King William County; his wife is Sally P. age 20 b Albermarle County; he is Christopher B. Lipscomb in the 1860 Slave Schedule for Nelson County; his children on the population schedule are Mary J age 2 and William age 4/12.

In 1850, Christopher B. is 15 in the household of Christopher Lipscomb (56) and Elizabeth (40) in Nelson County, VA; Alexander Lipscomb age 17 is aslo in the home.

Hope these records help

Hi Thank you for your help but as yet I have made no connection with the Cambridgeshire Peytons. John Payton was a labourer in Ilsley in Berkshire at the time of his marriage in 1740 so I am looking for a birth between 1700 and 1720,but do not know which way to turn as there are Paytons in Gloucestershire,Oxfordshire and Warwickshire all have variations in their spelling.
Thank you again.
Damien.

There childrens name were:
Ray T.[ my dad]
Howard W.
Claude G.
Luther D.
Irene
Laurance
Clarence[your grandfather]
Hobert
Audry.
This information was from the 1930 U.S. federal census.
Hobert and Audry were born after 1930,But I added there names to complete the list of children. The book contains over 40,000 descendants of Peytons/Paytons who resided in Virginia before 1800.
You might wish to search the book yourself. The price of the book has been reduced to $25. Please send me your email address and I will send you a book coupon.

Harold Davey

Re: PAYTON Ellsworth and Corinne

I think I erred in stating Ellsworth's line. I had Ellsworth descending from George Washington Payton through his son Francis; well the Francis in the line probably was not the son of George Washington Payton.

In the 1850 census in Mason County, Kentucky, George Payton's family is:

George Payton, 51, Trader, Kentucky
Orpha, 45, Kentucky
Francis (m), 19, Kentucky
George, 17, Kentucky
Hiram, 15, Kentucky
Katharine, 8, Kentucky
Elizabeth, 6, Kentucky
Susan, 4, Kentucky

In 1860, George is in Adams County, Illinois, with:

George Payton, 63, Farmer, Va
Orpha, 57, Ky
Elizabeth, 16, Ky
Susan, 13, Ky

So, with George in Adams County, I assumed the Francis Peyton, age 29, a cooper also in Adams County in 1860 was son of George Payton of Mason County, Kentucky. The problem is, in the 1850 census of Adams County, Illinois is a cooper named William Peyton, age 49, born Kentucky, with son Francis M. Peyton, age 21, also a cooper. Given that this Francis is a cooper in Adams County in 1850, I think it is most likely that the father of the 29 year old cooper in Adams County in 1860 was William, rather than George; they still may be in the same family, as George Washington Payton in the Peytons of Virginia CP line had a brother named William. I don't have any proof, though, that the George Payton in Adams County in 1860 is related to the Willam Payton in Adams County in 1850.

Thanks much! This is not my family, but I just found Ellsworth last night in the 1900 census; then you post his gravestone photo today!

Ellsworth is in the Peytons of Virginia CP line; based on census work this week (1st 2 generations from Peytons of Virginia II), I have him as:

1. Thomas Payton, school teacher and portraitist, b ca. 1755/1765, VA, d 1832 Mason Co., KY (or 1841?); married 3 times, including (3) Nancy Whitecotton
2. George Washington Payton, b. 1793, VA, m Orpha Hughey
3. Francis Payton, b 1831, KY, m Sarah Jane Sterne, IL
4. Alonzo Payton, b April 1855, IL, m Sophronia ______
5. Ellsworth Payton, b July 1893, KY

I am working on this family because we have a 2nd cousin, twice removed of Ellsworth in the Payton/Peyton Surname Y DNA Project.

Jacob Payton b 1787, William Payton b 1791, Susan Payton b 1795 DNA test proves Maj. Robert Peyton match

For all those descendants of the above siblings, I was able to persuade a male Payton descendant of Jacob Payton b 1787 to submit to a 37 marker DNA test, and there resulted a 36 marker match to Maj. Robert Peyton b circa 1640 (proves a 99% relationship within the last 400 years). Maj. Robert is #5 in the descendants of Thomas Abbot Peyton (A Line) in the Peyton's of Virginia II book. See http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/payton/results for the match and for more reading on what the DNA test proves. This dispells many different family theories, and concentrates the search for the one or two probable missing generations to most likely Maj. Robert's descendents.

Louisa Brown is (was) my great-grandmother. Here's how the line goes, from Leroy Payton. Leroy Payton married Mary Millie Rogers. Their son, Leroy Payton Jr. married a woman named Nancy Smith. Leroy Jr. and Nancy had a daughter, Charlotte Payton. Charlotte Payton married Henry Brown. Charlotte and Henry had Jesse Brown. Jesse is the fathe of my great-grandmother, Louisa Brown. One of Louisa's sons, John Franklin Harper, is (was) my grandfather. He had 10 kids with my grandmother, Veda Pierson. My mother, Frances Juanita Harper is their fifth child. Hope this helps. I believe the entire family tree is open to the public--I have titled it "Harper Brown Family Tree."

Hello Cousin Matthew,

My name is Larry Payton. We are proven cousins through research and through DNA testing. I am the researcher that submitted all the information on some 2000 Peytons of Georgia to the Peyton Society of Virginia to have it included in the Peytons of Virginia 2004 book. I would like to share additional information with you if you’re interested.

I would like to have more info on your great grandfather, grandfather & father. If you have pictures of individuals and pictures gravestone markers that would be great. I have pictures of your great great grandfather, John Thomas Payton and your ggggrandfather, Randolph Rufus "Bone" Payton if you’re interested.

Hope to hear from you soon,

Your Cousin, Larry
I am also seeking info on a John Payton (Peyton). My John was b abt 1815 in VA & m Catherine Slaughter 1832 in Kanawha County, VA (now WV). Before 1840 they were living in Louisa Co, IA & John died before 1850. They had at least 5 children. William & Richard (both killed in the Civil War), Frances Marian, James Madison, & John W. William m Sarah Gregory & had a dtr Nellie Eldora. After William's death, Sarah m Albert Neighbors & they moved to the Parsons, KS area. Richard never married. Frances m Franklin Fowler & moved the Cass Co., NE. James m Paulina J Dix & moved to KS, then on to Indian Territory (now OK). Don't know what happened to young John. According to Catherine's will in 1872, son John was married. Looking for more info on young or old John. Those Paytons sure are elusive. I have been at the same place for over 30 years on the older John. I do have quite a bit of info on the other lines. Please contact me if you think there might be a link. I am desperate!!!
