Tomchik was my stepgrandfather-and yes, I am searching that also.

I don't mind circles because sometimes they break and you find another tangent.

There are two other relatives of a younger generation who have responded and are also digging around alot.

Everyone including you have been so helpful. Many thanks.

It does look like we are going in circles but I am hopefull that one of those circles will have a clue. Keep digging, asking. Something just has to be someplace.
What about the TOMCHICK/TOMC^IK/TOMCSIK surname? I know a long shot but never know if his record might not have something.

Jeanne

I am trying my best to suggest where else you might look for a place of birth. Was a region like Spis, Zemplin, Saris ever mentioned by your family members? What sort of surnames show up on a census as being their neighbor? Family went to family in the old days. Sometimes the godparents names can provide a clue to a location in old country.
Unfortunately, the pre 1906 naturalization petition, the one I saw, did not have a place of birth. I was hoping that something in the church record. I am pointing your research toward Slovak Republic.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/country_profiles/1844842.s...
http://web.archive.org/web/20050206091340/www.adc.sk/english...
Have you surfed the net with www.google.com

Teresa Veniger married George Poytosh I have emailed you about. She was from Slovakia. Hungarian and Slovak were
spoken in the home. I have no information on when she arrived (born 1871). They lived in Fairport Harbor, Ohio
(Lake County) and were married in the area but cannot find any marriage records. George died around 1910 but can find no records.

I appreciate all the references you gave me to research.

John and George Poytosh were brothers who came to Lake County, Ohio in late 1800's from Hungary.

John is listed in the Lake County, Ohio Naturalization Index, issued 3/31/1893. I don't have George's info yet.

Lake County supposedly was one of the few places this naturalization process occured back then.

Hungarian and Slovak were spoken in the family.

Sorry haven't responded sooner, just geting used to the site
and been out of town.

Jeanne, Columbus, Ohio

Did you locate her state marriage application or church marriage record? We need to find her place of birth to proceed with the research.
Common language was a must for our first ancestors.
A map of Austria-Hungary:
http://users.erols.com/mwhite28/austhung.htm
In case you changed your e-mail address, please check your posting history as I have left few replies.

Thank you for your information. I just started posting in past few weeks.

My grandmother was from Slovakia but never gave us any info from where. I only have her birthdate but no info on when or where she came from. It was like she didn't want to talk about it. Married Geoerge Poytosh in Fairport Harbor, Ohio who came from we believe Hungary. Another posting from a distant relative supposedly had his arrival date but no info from where. Never knew about no W in the Slovak alpha.

I will take what you gave me so far and research.

My grandfather was George Poytosh/Paytosh, brother of John.
He also owned a Saloon and Pool Hall in Fairport Harbor. Could there have been two bars in such a small town?

Don't know about the silver dollars, but my Mother, Margaret
Poytos (Degley married) told me stories about their living upstairs in the bar building and watching the sailors walk down the hill to the bar, then stagger and fall going back up the hill back to their ships.

George Poytosh married Theresa Weniger and they had 13 children, five who lived, Anna, George, Theresa, Margaret
and Mary. When George died, Theresa moved to Scranton Road
in Cleveland, married Michael Tomchik.

Several others researching Paytosh/Weniger names are trying to find out what part of Slovia they came from. We have some of their naturalization dates, but no town where they came from.

Can you share any info?

Jeanne Griffin, Columbus, Ohio

I was raised in northern wisconsin and have relatives in Milwaukee and the Benoit/Mason and Ashland areas of Wisconsin. My grandmother married twice once to a Milnick and once to a John Pajtash. Curious if there is any overlapping lineage. Feel free to contact me at bbc@ptwi.net.

Gerry

John PAYTOSH or POYTOSH Michael PAYTOSH, Fairport OH

I'm searching for any information on the Paytosh family who lived in lake County in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Alternate spellings of this Slovak surname include Poytosh and Pajtash, and there may be more.

My grandmother was Mary Paytosh. Her father's name was John Paytosh, who is said to have owned a restaurant or bar in Fairport Harbor, OH that featured silver dollars embedded in the bar or floor. John Paytosh's wife's first name was Maria.

Mary's siblings included: John, George, Steve and Michael. Their wives were (respectively): Anna, Anna, and Mary. Michael Paytosh died in a boating accident and never married. Relatives recall a photo of Michael over a photo of the boat in which he died, possibly with a newspaper article about the event, but this artifact is lost now.

Around the 1920s, the Paytosh family moved from Fairport Harbor to Scranton Rd in Cleveland, Ohio where they owned at least two homes, renting one. Mary and Harry Zick (born Akron OH 1899) married in the late 1920 s probably, and they lived in Cleveland OH.

I'd love to hear from anyone who can help me find more information on John Paytosh's bar. (Rumor has it that it may been more than a bar, i.e. a "gentleman's club), more about how Michael died, and anything else. Also if any other Paytosh descendents are out there, I'd love to get in touch.

I don't know what information I would be able to offer but please leave me an email with any questions. Also I would love to know all you know about our lineage

I am a granddaughter of John Paytosh/Poytosh and his second wife, Theresa Weniger, of Fairport, Ohio.

I remember the Zicks name because my Mom was close with them when she lived in Fairport as a child.

I have a picture of the Saloon John owned. My mother and her siblings lived upstairs from the saloon and she often told me stories how they would watch the sailors come down the hill from the harbor to the bar.

I, too, am looking for some information on where John was originally from.

My grandmother supposedly was from Austria-Hungary and am trying to find out more.
