Payzant/Pezant

My family of Pezants are from Charleston, S.C. and I've been told-they descend from a brother to one who stayed in Nova Scotia. Why the spelling difference-I don't know. Some of our Pezanrs live in Louisianna. Can someone help me connect the 2 families of NS and S.C.?Mary Kidd

Biography of Marie Anne and Louis Payzant

An excellent biography of Anne Marie and Louis Payzant (my great-great-great-great grandparents) written by Linda Layton, was published in June, 2003. It is titled "A Passion for Survival: The True Story of Marie Anne and Louis Payzant in 18th Century Nova Scotia" and it's ISBN is 1551094576. It is currently available at amazon.ca (and amazon.com).

Also see the interview with the author, reprinted at http://www.wickware.com/Newsletters/Volume%204/Vol4_Issue194...

Re: The Payzant Montcalm connection

In Marion M. Payzant's "The Payzant and Allied Jess and Juhan Families in North America" 1970, she does not give any known account of a Payzant and Montcalm connection. One fact is that Montcalm was Roman Catholic and in Quebec; and Marie Payzant was French Huguenot and in Nova Scotia.

Lisette Payzant was born in Quebec City 26 December 1756.

Marie Payzant and her five children settled in Falmouth in 1760. Lisette married George Jess, Sr. 1774, Falmouth, NS.

I am hoping that someone can help me discover the origins and meaning of this unusual surname. Sorry, the connection with this name is distant and through non-lineage marriage. My guess is that it may mean peasant. Help gratefully received.
