Peabody Family

The Local History Room at Albion Public Library is the official archive for Peabody Family records at Albion, Michigan. Albion was founded by Paul Tenney Peabody and his wife Eleanor Thompson Peabody in 1833. The family arrived at the Forks of the Kalamazoo River after a winter overland journey via Canada from Niagara County, New York. The eldest daughter, Louisa, became the mother of Madelon Stockwell, the first woman to attend The University of Michigan, breaking barriers of co-education for women in public institutions. The archive contains family photographs and other informative documents. If you have materials that would inform this history or wish information, the Local History Room can be reached at www.albionlibrary.org.
I am searching for information about Carlton Augustine Peabody. He was born Dec. 31, 1858 in Topsfield, Essex County, Massachusetts, son of Jacob and Eliza (Chapman) Peabody. Carlton A. Peabody was a Corporal in the U. S. Army at the time of his death on March 22, 1888 at Fort Klamath, Klamath County, Oregon. Did he die in action, or of natural causes? Was Corporal Carlton A. Peabody married to Edith J. Garrison (born June 1868), and did he have a son Hector C. Peabody (born April, 1887 in Oregon)? Is Carlton Augustine Peabody in anyone's family history?

Dr. Wesley Camp McNamara (1895-1970) married Ruth Peabody (1900-1978) in 1931.
Mrs. McNamara was "from Levant" at the time of their marriage. They had no children.
They lived in Lincoln, Maine where "Dr Mac" practiced medicine.

The McNamara's are included in some Family Trees at Ancestry.com.

The Lincoln (Maine) Historical Society Book Committee is currently gathering information for their next publications - Doctors, Lawyers....
We welcome any and all information (including facts, stories, anecdotes, pictures) abt this couple. The McNamaras were well-known and important characters in Lincoln's history. Their absence in a local history would be a great loss. Can anybody expand on our limited information? Thank you.

Early English Parish Registers: Francis Peabody/Pabodie & Father/Grandfather?

In going over my very old/early research on Francis Peabody/Pabodie, I am reminded that in various sources used at the time, there was never any documentation for the birth, marriages, etc for Francis and his Father (John) or his Grandfather ? John who had a wife Agnes. Has anyone been able to view the registers to back up or disprove this data? I see several filmed/printed registers for St Albans on familysearch.org but I do not now live near any FHL nor a library to do an inter-library loan. Would love to document/back up the information found so long ago that was w/o documentation. My Peabody line is a very short one, ending with Lydia who md. Thomas Howlett and then Thomas Perl(e)y.

Lois PEABODY & Roger METCALF

Help, I'm trying to find the parents of Lois PEABODY. According to family notes and the Hyde Genealogy, Lois Peabody m. Roger Metcalf, 1 Jan. 1794 in Cooperstown, Otsego co., NY. I am hoping that Lois is the d/o Aaron PEABODY from Little Compton, RI who went to New Lebanon, Columbia co., NY. She would be the Lois b.1777 from his second marriage to Rebecca? Now there's an interesting note written by my husband's great grdmother which says "Data on silverware - Solid silver teaspoon marked P.P. (Philinda PEABODY) belonged to my grt,grt grdmother. My mother was [maiden name] Miranda Metcalf WYMAN; her mother was Caroline METCALF; her mother was Lois PEABODY, wife of Roger I. METCALF. Philinda was the mother of Lois. One of Lois's daughters also named Philinda". Also of note is the fact that Aaron & Rebecca had a daughter, Philinda b. abt 1780. Could Rebecca be Philinda Rebecca or Rebecca Philinda??

Dr. Jacob Peabody and son, Nathaniel

I recently purchased a book dated 1848 regarding the Annual Register of New Hampshire. In this book there is a short paragraph about Nathaniel Peabody, son of Dr. Jacob Peabody and born in Topsfield, Mass. He studied medicine with his father and went into practice with his father in 1760 in that part of Plaistow afterward annexed to Atkinson. He was appointed Lieutenant Colonel in the Militia, 1774, and in December of this year he and several others went to Fort Willam and Mary, at Newcastle, confined the captain and his men, and then carried off 100 barrels of powder. He represented Plaistow and Atkinson in the Assembly for the years 1776 - 8 - 9; also served on the Committee of Safety. He was in 1778 appointed Adjutant-General and was in commande under Gen. Whipple over troops from this State in Rhode Island. In 1779 was elected delegate to the Continental Congress, was Representative and Speaker in the Legislature, was Councillor and Senator; he was chairman of a committe to draft a new constitution.

Thought I would share with those who have Jacob and Nathaniel Peabody in their lineage.

Yesterday, I accidentally came across information on Miss Elizabeth Palmer PEABODY, a famous educator in 1800's MA (started very first Kindergarten in U.S.)
The information stated she was born in Billerica, MA, in 1804. Because I am interested in the early history of Billerica, I checked the "History of Billerica," and found a paragraph on .. Nathaniel PEABODY, M.D., born 1774 Topsfield, MA.

It turns out that his wife, nee' Elizabeth PALMER, was a famous educator, and they had three daughters who became famous, and I learned about the book, "the Three PEABODY Sisters of Salem."

(Their second daughter married .. Horace MANN and their third daughter married .. Nathaniel HAWTHORNE.)

They also had a son, Nathaniel PEABODY, who lived his adult life in Concord, MA, and lived into his 80's. I don't know if their younger children lived long enough to marry and have children.

The "Billerica book" does not list the parents of Nathaniel PEABODY, b1774. But, I've looked at the Archives of the PEABODY Message Boards, and he seems to have come from a line of PEABODY's going back into the early 1600's.

Also, the "Billerica book" does not mention that Dr. PEABODY was a Dentist, but I read that somewhere else.
I wonder if he was the first Dentist in Billerica.

Dr. and Mrs. Nathaniel PEABODY (m1802 Andover?) seem to have only lived in Billerica for a few years, as their second daughter was born in Cambridge and their third daughter was born in Salem.

I am looking for relatives of my mothers. Her father's name was Joseph Anthony Batastini, he was born in Santa Barbara, California on October 18, 1919 in his families home, and died in December 1959, when my mother was thirteen. He was married to Helen Lucille Adkins Batastini, and they had one child a girl named Alice Katherine Batastini. The last time my mother seen anyone in her family my older brother was seven months old, and that would be about forty years ago. My Greatgrandfather's name was Luigi Batastini and my greatgrandfather called my greatgrandmother Katie which was short for her original name. My Grandfather had a Trucking Business the only thing I know is that it was called Batastini Trucking, I think but am not real sure. I have pictures of my grandfather and some of his family and friends but would really love to see that side of my family in person. If you have any information on the family please let me know.

Thank you,
Laura

I have a wonderful small photograph of Charles Alden Peabody taken when he was 3 years, 8 months, on May 28, 1901. The photographer was Taylor & Preston, Salem, Mass. The handsomely-dressed little boy has blond hair that apparently never was cut...down to his elbows. The image is available for sale.

Joseph Guilford aka Torrey Peabody

Searching for further information on Joseph Guilford, son of Aaron Guilford and Abigail Peabody, born 3 Sep 1816 in Salem, MA. He married Matilda Alley either 23 Feb 1833 in Salem, MA or 1 Jun 1834 in Saugus, MA.

According to the Peabody Genealogy (Peabody, Selim Hobart, Boston, 1909), Joseph Guilford changed his name to Torrey Peabody, without reason noted. He is found on various census records, in military pension files, and on his death certificate as Torrey Peabody. All of his children are surnamed Peabody. He died 26 Mar 1887 in Lynn, MA.

If someone has information about his ancestry and/or why he changed his name, I'd love to correspond.
