Henderson Peach – The question of the ancestry of Henderson Peach has a puzzling air to it. What is known about him and his descendants?
He was born in 1824 in Tennessee as the 1850 census of Cherokee County, Texas indicates. He died in Paris, Lamar, Texas in 1862 as this is the date on his headstone in the Old City Cemetery. He married Elizabeth Brown Chapman on January 4, 1844 in Madison Co, Tennessee. A reasonable conclusion is that between birth and marriage, he was a resident of Tennessee and most likely in or near Madison County. His first two children, George William Chapman Peach (b. 15 Sep 1846, d. 25 Nov 1860) and Austen Houston Peach (b. 19 May 1848, d. Jan 1925) were born in Tennessee as the 1880 census of Lamar County, Texas indicates. His third child, Mary Elizabeth Peach (b. 15 Mar 1850, d. 11 Dec 1850) was born in 1850 in Cherokee County, Texas. Sometime between May, 1848 and March, 1850 his family migrated from Tennessee to Texas.
Elizabeth Brown Chapman was born 11 May 1820 in North Carolina and died 27 Dec 1882 in Palo Pinto County, Texas. Her father (unknown) was born in Virginia and her mother (unknown name) was born in Tennessee. She is listed on the Texas Indigent Family list of 1863 and 1864 with 7 individuals in her care.
The 1880 census of Lamar County, Texas indicates that all of their children lists their mother as being born in North Carolina and their father being born in Tennessee.
Since Henderson Peach was born in or near Madison County, Tennessee in 1820, then research should focus on the Peach that resided in that area at that time. We can make a reasonable assumption that his father was between the ages of 20 and 40 when he was born or between 1780 and 1800. Thus, we are looking for Unknown Peach who lived in Tennessee in 1820 and was born between 1780 and 1800.
Referring to John Harding Peach’s book, “The Peach/Peachey Migration”, several suspect individuals fall into that category. They are:

John Peach, Jr. pg. 173

James Peach pg 171, 179

Monroe Peach pg 174

Interestingly enough, all three of these individuals are descendant from John Peach, b. 1755/59, d. 12 Jul 1807. The conclusion is that Henderson Peach is descendant from this John Peach. Unless some other reasonable explanation can be presented, research efforts should be focused on the assumption. It follows that all Texas Peaches who descend from Henderson Peach are of that line.
