Hello 'Pearmans',

I can also back up Mavis on this in that there are many Pearmans in the South East of England.
My grandfather, Arthur Henry Pearman was born in Walthamstow (SE London), and I believe he was one of 11 children (2 boys and 9 girls, most of whom are no longer alive (He is now in his late eighties). I believe his father ran a betting shop in Walthamstow. They later moved out of London to Essex just before World War 2.

Whether we (Pearmans) originate from England though is something I am not certain of? Due to our looks my father is often asked if he is of German origin, whereas I am often asked if I am from Scandanavia. On the other hand my grandfather often mentions we are Jewish but in another breath says we are from France! Any suggestions welcome!

Cara Davis (nee Pearman), UK, but soon to be Australia!

"Two Centuries in Elizabethtown & Hardin County, Kentucky" by Daniel E. McClure, Jr. 1979 Published by Hardin Co. Historical Society.
Pg. 7, Column 2
Quote - The land in the West Point area adjoining Salt River, like much of the land in Kentucky, was granted to various persons based on their Revolutionary War services, the grants being known as Virginia Military Land Grants. The grants in the immediate West Point vicinity included 1,000 acres granted to Thomas Pearman, based on a claim made by his son, Samuel Pearman, in 1776, which ran along Salt River, and the John May grant of 308 acres, extending from Salt River down the Ohio for about a mile and consisted of all the land on which the present town of West Point is located. May was a Revolutionary War soldier and held title to many land grants in Kentucky, a number which he sold. The 308 acres were sold to Richard Bibb, who in turn sold the lot to James Young for $750.00. Young, who came to Kentucky as a young man, was to become known as "The Father of West Point," and also as the "Father of the L&N Turnpike."
William M. Withers, another Revolutionary War veteran, had a gran of 1,000 acres, which extended down to the Muldraugh's Hill. He occupied the land in 1794. The Thomas Barbour grant was for 1,000 acres and extended west from the Young and Pearman land along the Ohio River. William C. Withers, a cousin of Will M. Withers, likewise a Revolutionary War veteran, secured a portion of the Barbour grant. Like so many of the Kentucky land claims, it was tied up in litigation for many years.
The 308 acres to which James Young had title following it purchase from John May were a portion of the 1,000 acres claimed by Samuel Pearman, the legal settlement of which was a decision in the Hardin Circuit Court in 1816. The decision declared Youn the owner and also proprietor of the town of West Point since the town was laid out on his land, and that all funds from the sale of the town lots theresafter would be paid to him. These funds he continued to receive untilhis death in 1849. - end Quote

I am aware of Briggs’ work and the story that seven of the Pearman brothers served in the Revolution. However, none of the primary sources I have read (deeds, surveys, court records, tax lists, depositions, wills, military land warrants) yield any evidence that Samuel, Jesse, Randall or Nathan fought in the Revolution. If you know of any, I would love to hear about it.

Many early land ownership claims in Kentucky (1780-1820) were contested because of inaccurate or misinterpreted metes and bounds surveys, overlapping and duplicate claims, the difficulty of settling permanently because of Indian resistance to hunting lands being settled by whites, etc.
Briggs mentions one such lawsuit brought by Thomas Pearman against [his brother] Samuel Pearman. After being discharged from Rev War service in the VA line in 1783, Thomas settled in Georgia (as did William). Jefferson Co VA court records show that Samuel Pearman, who had moved to Pennsylvania and then Kentucky in the 1780s, filed for 3000 acres in military grants and exemptions in Hardin Co KY, claiming to be heir-at-law to [his brothers] John Pearman, Elisha Pearman, and Thomas Pearman, deceased Revolutionary soldiers entitled to land warrants. At least one (Thomas) was not deceased, however, and after the death in 1804 of his first wife (Esther Wills) he moved to Kentucky to challenge Samuel’s claim. In the meantime some of the land had been sold or gifted to Randall, Jesse and Nathan, the other three putative brothers who went to Kentucky. The legal battle was not resolved until 1815, when the court awarded Thomas most of the land that was left in Samuel’s possession, and ordered that Thomas pay money to Samuel (to compensate him for several decades of improving and managing the land).
There are books that have documented sources on the Pearmans in KY. The book "Pioneer Settlers, and Related Families at the Mouth of Salt River (West Point Kentucky" by Richard A Briggs has a history of the Pearmans that came to KY with documentation on a lot of it. The author thinks that at least seven of the Pearman brothers that served in the Revolution. one of them, John Pearman of the VA line died at Valley Forge while serving with Washington. He died on Dec 30, 1776. He waa with the 6th VA Regiment.

Proof of Thomas Pearman Sr's service can be found in Land Military Warrant Number 2595, whereby he was given 600 acres for his service in the VA Continental Line , warrant dated Feb 23, 1784.

Mr. Briggs has written 3 books , all of which have information on the Pearman lines. If you would like the names of the other two, and where you can get them, let me know.

The four who did or probably did serve: Elisha, John, William, Thomas. Those who probably didn't: Samuel, Jesse, Randall and Nathan; these migrated to Ky.

Samuel PEARMAN - Will, 14 Apr 1824

The following is from Hardin County, Kentucky WILLS 1793-1866. Abstract of Wills, Will Books A, B, C, D, E compiled by Mary Josephone Jones.

p. 70 - Will Book D
158-- PEARMAN, SAMUEL - Non-cupative Will, 14 Apr 1824.
Wife Nancy Pearman to have entire estate for raising her children.
Witness John Pawley, Sibert Pearman.
Recorded 3 May 1824.

Photocopied while at the Family Research Center in Salt Lake City in April 2006. The library number is:
US/CAN
976.9845
P29j

I believe there is a relationship to "my" Pearmans but have not proven that yet. My great-great-great-grandmother was Elizabeth B Pearman who married Harmon Coffman on 18 Feb 1845 in LaRue County, KY. More on that family can be found at my site: http://www.ancestors-genealogy.com/coffmanpeach/.

Note in the Thomas Pearman will just posted that one of his daughters was married to a Pawley. Was Sibert a brother? uncle? father? I have one Samuel Pearman in my records that would be about that age but the wife's name I have is Mary BACORN. Of course she could be a first wife. Hmmm. Would be interested in any information that would better define this family.

There are several books written by a man named Richard Briggs of West Point, Hardin Co., KY that has lots of information on this family. It includes census records, wills, marriages and some information about where they went from here and where they came from. Bayliss is in the books.

This family was in VA before the Revolution.

My Mother was born in Blount Co. AL to Charles Webb Pearman and Joisey Malinda Mann Pearman in 1896. My grandfather had a cousin named Floyd Pearman and one named Wiley Nichols. Are you familiar with any of these names?

There was a Weldon Pearman in GA in the early 1800's, Is there a connection there? His father was William Pearman and he died in Madison GA in 1816. He was a Revolutionary Soldier, but not my family. My William Pearman lived in Halifax NC and died there in 1800. His sons came to GA. and that is my line. My grandfather came to Blount
Co from Floyd Co. GA.

Barbara Freeman Davis
barbjd@bellsouth.net

I believe I found the tax records for Sebert & Randal. However I have not found any proof of relationship.

I only rented the Hardin Co. LDS Film 1822-1828. This resulted in proving that Randle did not pay taxes after 1827 nor was he listed in the census of 1830. His son Sebert paid taxes in Hardin Co. through 1828, but by 1830 he was in Vermillion Co., IN.

I have had a difficult time finding docs or help in getting docs mailed to me when I do locate them so progress is slow. I put this line aside after a year of such difficulties.

I only have 6 children for William & 4 children for Randle.
I believe you are correct about the Rev. War service. I think the land that was originally obtained in the KY area was a land bounty for service and Randle was not one who served. I am curious if he did sign an oathe?

If you have addl. information I would be very interested. As stated before scraps of info are so hard to come by.
My grandmother's name was Lillie E. Pearman and her father was Bayliss Pearman. Bayliss's family was all from Kentucky, but Bayliss married and moved to Missouri. Later, the family moved to Illinois, and my grandmother was their last child. She was two when her mother died, but Bayliss did not die until 1929. I have some information on the family{I know they started off in Virginia} but I am always interested in learning moreabout the family.Do stay in touch.Deborah Plegge
