Hi there!
I have just started researching the 'Pears' for my d-in-law. Her father is Stanley Pears, son of Edwin Pears (1896) and grandson of Edwin (b 1871). It would seem that your mother and he are fairly closely related.
Some of the maiden names you gave were very useful. The only name I would query is that of Edwin's wife. The 1901 census shows her being named 'Martha' not Bertha. A typing error perhaps.
Regards John
Hi there, I'm not sure if you are still researching the Yorkshire side of your family tree. My great grandmother was Eva Pears, she was born in Scarborough in 1895 and moved to Leeds. Her father was William Pears born 1851. I have a lot of Pears in my tree all from either Scarborough, Malton or Eastrington all in Yorkshire, I have also some who moved down south. Hope it is of some use to you. Please contact me if your think this might be the family your looking for. Kind regards, Laura.

Annie and Harriett Pears

I am looking for information pre 1862 about the above two girls who were born around 1840 and their family. Harriett was born in London and I assume Annie was too. They left England in 1862 embarking in Adelaide, South Australia. On Harriett's marriage certificate she states her father as Henry but no mother is listed. As with all people researching the Pears name we have been told down the line that Harriett was related to the Pears Soap Family but we take this with a grain of salt.

Any takers?

Re: The Pears Soap Family

Elsbeth,

I know you've emailed me direct, but here is the basic Pears Soap information for this message board.

Andrew Pears snr., invented the transparent soap while working at a gentlemen's hairdressers in Gerrard Street Soho, some time after he had moved up to London in 1795 from a farm near Mevagissey in Cornwall. He recruited his brother(s) in due course, but the business remained quite small in central London for almost half a century - relying almost entirely on personal recommendations. AP retired in 1838. Then around the 1850s a marketing genius named Barratt married into the Pears family and was also recruited into the firm in a high capacity. He made the soap world-famous, and they moved to Isleworth in Middlesex in 1862, where they eventually built a total of three factories, and where they stayed for the next hundred years. Towards the end of that century they were spending a million pounds a year on advertising - at a time when you could buy a semi for about £120, and when Andrew Pears jnr., spent only £120,000 in building a magnificent 50-roomed mansion in Isleworth (the equivalent of about £7 million today). Visit SPRINGGROVEGRAMMAR.COM for details and pictures. AP jnr., had nine chldren. In the early 1960s the business was acquired by Unilever, who moved manufacture of the Pears soap to Port Sunlight in Cheshire, and disposed of the factories and the site in Middlesex.

There exists a retired Chief Historical Librarian named Andrea Cameron who, like me, went to the school that eventually occupied the Pears' mansion. Outside the descendants of the Pears family she knows virtually all there is to know about Pears and Pears Soap: having written articles and booklets on the subject. I am in regular touch with her, and I will shortly try and put her on-line here to settle all the queries about the Pears Soap Family. jhb

See my message headed Pears Soap dated 25 July 2001. The core of the soap family was Cornwall 1795, Central London till 1862, Isleworth Middlesex (now London)till 1960 - then company sold to international conglomerate Unilever. Factories were pulled down, and transparent soap now made near Liverpol.

jhb

Pears Soap

Facts: Andrew Pears snr., came from a farm near Mevagissey in Cornwall. He moved to Soho in 1795 and worked in a gentlemen's hairdressers, where he invented transparent soap. The business remained very small for 50 years or so, until the marketing genius Barrett joined the firm. In 1962 the company moved to Isleworth in Middlesex, and over time built three factories producing soap products. They remained there for a hundred years, until they were bought by Unilever and the manufature of Pears Soap was transferred to Port Sunlight in Cheshire. So, the roots were in Cornwall, the early years were in central London, and the highly profitable years were in Isleworth, Middlesex. Barrett was the key to their becoming known world-wide. If you can trace any connection with farmer Pears in Cornwall in the eighteenth century, or Andrew Pears in Marylebone or Isleworth in the nineteenth, you may be on to something - otherwise you are probably best advised to forget it.
jhb

I can probably provide you with all the information you need to know about Pears Soap and the family. Andrew Pears built and occupied the mansion that became Spring Grove Grammar School. If you visit the school website springgrovegrammar.com you will get much information direct from that site. But if you want more - mail me. jhb
