My great-grandfather was Hiram Abiff Peckham, 1881-1970. I thank you for your information posted here. It is more accurate than most I've found.
Hiram was married to Nora Agnes Laffaye when my father, Walter J. Raskopf, Jr. was born, but she died shortly after he was born, and he remarried, very quickly, Catherine, who I knew as Nana. Hiram has one remaining daughter, Aunt Eileen. The next generation still has many, as do the subsequent two generations.
I love your photos, and would appreciate seeing anything more you have of your great grandparents, or of Hiram Abiff, my great grandfather.
This may be a long shot: my ggg grandfather was Smith Peckham Chase, son of Oliver and Amy (Rice)Chase from E. Killingly, CT. Oliver's father was also Oliver, b. 1761, Swansea, MA and m. Phebe, last name unknown. Thought I would ask to see if you have a Phebe Peckham marrying and Oliver Chase in possibly, MA, RI, or CT. I have been unable to identify Phebe.

Thank you.

Martha G. Peckham -- parents?

Edward Bailey of Rowley MA married a Martha G. Peckham c.1860 in Kittery, Maine. They lived in Rowley (Essex) MA and both are buried there.

Martha was born c1837, probably in the Somersworth, NH area (then known as "Great Falls").

The unconfirmed info I am working from is:
Martha's parents were James Leopold Peckham of Newport RI and Nancy Holmes of Plymouth, MA. Other info indicates that James's middle initial might be "A."

Family lore says that James's mother was Martha George, and that her father was "Capt. George" of Newport RI.

Nancy Holmes Peckham possibly was related, through her mother, to the owners of the Cornish Tavern in Plymouth MA. She is reported to have been born in Plymouth. She is buried in Rowley, MA with Martha & Edward Bailey, but her husband is not there. Her gravestone lists her as the widow of James Peckham.

Any clues as to where I can go with this information will be appreciated. This is a longstanding brick wall that I would love to break through!

Thanks,
Janet P.

Hello,

Do you have a James Peckham m. Nancy Holmes (of Plymouth, MA), probably in the early(ish) 1800s? They had a daughter, Martha G. Peckham, who was born c1837. She married in Maine, so likely they left the RI area after their marriage.

Thanks in advance,
Janet P.

Hi -- is anyone still researching this thread? I have a brick wall in my Peckham search, and the dead end involves a Peckham marrying a Holmes. Could they be connected to Thomas & Thankful mentioned here? My line goes back to a James Peckham (middle initial either A or L, I believe), supposedly from Newport RI. He married Nancy Holmes, who was born in Plymouth, MA. I have no proof of this -- marriage or birthplaces -- it's family lore.

I do know that Martha G. (George?) Peckham m. Edward Bailey in Kittery, ME, and that these people are listed as her parents.

Nancy is buried in Rowley, MA with Martha & Edward. James is not there, but she is listed as widow of James A. Peckham and stated to be born 4 Jan 1804 in Plymouth. She died 6 Feb 1883.

Any information is appreciated!
Thanks,
Janet P.

Before i spend a ton of money getting it microfiched - I'd like to know if there is any information on John L. Peckham, son of Robert Burdick Peckham, and John's family.

My Great, Great Grandmother was Sarah E. Peckham (I have her birthdate as August 1890, which may be wrong). Her parents are Phoebe A. Crandall and John L. Peckham. John's parents were Robert Burdick Peckham, and Mary Ann Richmond Saunders. I was wondering if anyone has any information on this line? My Great Great Grandparents divorced somewhere between 1910, and 1920. When they divorced they each took a child, and no one has heard from Sarah or their son, George, again. It is a family mystery that we would like to solve! Any information on this line would be greatly appreciated!

George Peckham, Jerusha Bartlett

In the Peckham Genealogy by Stephen Farnum Peckham, it states on page 275 that Captain George Peckham's second wife was Jerusha Bartlett, daughter of Josiah and Mary Bartlett. Josiah was a physician, the Governor of New Hampshire, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. However, I have done research on the Bartlett family and cannot find any reference that suggests that Josiah and Mary had a daughter named Jerusha. Can anyone enlighten me?

Thanks,
Pat McIntyre
Dear Mr. Peckham, I am researching the Peckham family in Connecticut. My maternal grandfather's name was Herbert Palmer Peckham, and he died in 1963. He had a sister named Celia, or Cecilia whose married name was Wharf. I also understand he had a brother named Edward, who was very sick and lived in an iron lung. Other than this minimal information, I have nothing else. Do you have any connection to this Peckham family? Thank you for replying.

Looking for descendents of Sarah Peckham of Wash. Co. RI

I am looking for information on the family of Benjamin Boss & Sarah Peckham. They lived in Hopkinton, Washington Co, RI back in the 1800's. They had a child who I understand married James Madison Warner of NY. If anyone knows the name of a Boss that married James Warner, please email me. I know that there was a Warner who lived in Exeter, RI in 1880, & that is verified on the censes, as a sister to someone in Exeter. I know that the person went by the name of Renewed B. Warner & I feel sure that she was the last daughter of Sarah Peckham, Elizabeth, who was born in 1810. I don't know if she was put up for adoption or what. Does anyone know what happened to Jeremiah, Sarah or Sally; Marcy or Mary who married a Caleb Mathewson, , Emily who married a James Broadbent, or Elizabeth. Who brought these children up? Please if anyone knows anything on this, please email me. This person was my GGgrandmother. She had a daughter, Susannah Melissa Warner, who married a William Watkins. Thankyou.

Obituary for George A. Thomas, Westerly, Rhode Island

I need help finding a community newspaper or gazette where a death notice, obituary, funeral service or obsequies, memorial or burial service may have been reported. The time will be about April or May, 1863. The place for the funeral or memorial service may have been at Hopkinton, Washington County, Rhode Island, or Westerly, Washington County, Rhode Island. The burial service would have been at River Bend Cemetery, Westerly, Rhode Island. The person of interest is Private George A. Thomas, a Union soldier in the US Civil War serving with Company A, Seventh Regiment, Rhode Island Volunteers. Private George A. Thomas died on active duty April 14, 1863 in an Army hospital, Baltimore, Maryland. His body was transported “home” most likely to Hopkinton, Rhode Island where his wife, Lucy Kenyon, and two children resided. His body was buried in River Bend Cemetery, Westerly, Rhode Island. The PECKHAM family was responsible for moving the grave of George A. Thomas. Any assistance will be appreciated.

Bob Doughty, Seattle, Washington
Hi,
I am looking for GG Grandmother, Sarah E. Peckham. According to my great Aunt, Sarah married my GG Grandfather, William Henry Durfee. Sarah Peckham and William H. Durfee were divorced around 1912. They had my Great Grandfather, Thurman Durfee in 1907, and his brother George E. Durfee in 1909. Thurman was 5 years old, and George was 3 years old when their parents divorced. The brothers never saw each other again. George went with Sarah and Thurman with William. Sarah and George lived in Providence, RI and she worked as a housekeeper in a catholic rectory around 1920. Sarah also lived with a family by the name of Crandall. So, it is a possibility that she and George were overlooked in the search. Any information you could provide would be extremely helpful as all I know about Sarah is her name and that she was born in CT in 1891.

I'm seeking any info available about my father's side of our family. My grandfather was David Aura Peckham, married to Margaret Elizabeth Murphy in Missouri in the late 1800's. I believe my grandfather had a sister Nora or brother Joe in Missouri(I have a 65th wedding anniversary pic, but it just says "Dad's Aunt Nora & Uncle Joe, Kahoka Missouri. It is probably from the 1970's?) ("Dad" is my father, David Aura Peckham, Jr., who was born 7/4/1915 in Raynesford, Montana). Any info or help is welcome! Thanks, Ilona Peckham

Elizabeth Peckham

There is a record of marriage banns for Elizabeth Peckham and Jonas Senneck in Beaulieu, Hampshire, England in 1805.

Jonas Senneck's wife was certainly named Elizabeth. He originated in the Purbeck area of Dorset and the couple were living in Southampton by 1811 (and maybe 1808). Between the christenings of George Senneck in South Stoneham in 1816 and that of Sophia in Poole in 1819, the family moved from Southampton to Poole. Elizabeth died there in 1859. Her age then was given as 76, which makes her year of birth c1783. In the 1851 census, her place of birth was given as Southampton. There is an IGI record of a Betty Peckham being born in Ringwood in 1783, which makes her the correct age... Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Barbara A Pechan in my tree, but she was born in Iowa in 1858-1859. She was married to an Ernest Barr and lived in Meeker county, Minnesota. I also have an Anna Pehan born in 1890 in Douglas county, Minnesota. Don't know if either of these fit in with yours...

The Pechan's are VERY difficult to find in the census records. The family I have traced must not have had very good English, or they had a really bad accent that the census takers maybe couldn't understand very well, becuase it seems as a lot of the information is inconsistent from one census to the next, and the spelling of the last name varies from Pechan, Puhan, Peckan, and Peham.

I hope that you are still around after all these years, but I have a William Charles Peckham born 1880 in St John's, Newfoundland. If you think that is a match, do not hesitate to contact me. I am descended from these Peckhams.
John,

The only Uncle that I know of that was in the military was Harry, one of William's brothers.

My family was in St John's since about the 1850's, having moved from the Cat Harbour area.

There was another Peckham family in St John's in the 1950's that I believe was descended from an E. Peckham who immigrated to there from England in the middle 1800's.

Have your checked the web site at http://nl.canadagenweb.org/ ? There's lots of information there that goes back to the beginnings of Newfoundland.

Hope this helps

Marty
